@marietouchet @Pautinka @bunnycat and everyone else— Thank you!
I read all your posts on the journey to connect the dots of history, life, and art regarding this design, which haunted me from the first glimpse some time ago. my first reaction: huhrumooph?” (channeling the inquisitive Scooby Doo here).
I just didn’t “get it,” but knew somehow I should. More on SOTD when it arrives.

An example of a REAL FINESSE scarf with only two colors. Hard to find a good example among mine, I never liked them and own only one - CAVALCADE DE MAI was only done as finesse. You can see the illustration shows just the outlines of where colors would be applied
They were all the rage ca 1999
Very hard to photograph, the closeups are OK, but the folded scarves are all blanded out, my photos and I am a crummy photographer
There was no full color version but I do have a black and white photo of the fully illustrated art work that was copyrighted - to me, the difference is night and day, if they had only done it in full color ... swoon ... photo courtesy WIPO database - https://www3.wipo.int/

so delighted to see this! I put on my wishlist at some time past when you mentioned...haven’t seen yet IRL but hope springs eternal! Thank you.

Another example, I haveonly a few to share as the limited color scarves are not my thing , i used to own this one but sold it
CHAMPS DE COURSES ca 2007. It supposedly has 5 colors in it - field color of red and 3-4 shades of orange in the illustration. There was never a full color rendering of this design
It kind looks like a finesse design but is not the real deal, more of a pen and ink rendering ALA PIROUETTES AU GALOP
You can compare this to any of Watrigant's full color horse designs eg UN SIECLE DE COURSES, RONDE DE MARCHE etc see Google
To me, the 5 color pen and ink renderings were a large improvement over the 2 color finesse

Another good example, I dont own this design at all , no photos to share - see GOOGLE for plentiful photos
VENT PORTANT was done 3 ways
FULL COLOR - large illustration, boats, sails nautical flags, sky, ocean etc 15-20 colors
DETAIL version - VP II - was a close of the sails only - 5-8 colors, graphic/geometric look
FINESSE DETAIL - 2 color rendition of the outlines of the sails only

I remember being very sad when you mentioned it was issued only in finesse. I had imagined it would have been magnificent in full colour and had been searching for one.

Not a chance in full color, I made do with the finesse, but it lacks something
the finesses were mostly simplified versions of existing designs but there are some which never made it to full-color, sadly
And there are DETAIL designs which were never done in the original large illustration.
The whole series of Dallet's GIANT animals is basically in this category - GIRAFFES, TIGRE DU BENGALE, ZEBRES.
The full illustration OF ZEBRES came out like a decade later, but only in VS70, not 90

WOW! What a gorgeous design. Such a pity there is no full color version. I just imagine all the wonderful shades the roses and other flowers alone would be displayed in!

Hi MT, Please post these last two on the color thread; an interesting addition (as always from you!).

We discussed Cavalcade de Mai on SOTD some time back and figured the design was based on a medieval Book of Hours. If you look at the painting for May in the link, you'll see the resemblance and get an idea of how richly coloured it could have been.

If appropriate to this thread, @marietouchet, did H do Cavalcade de Mai in a reverse? I’ve acquired one ...ivory on purple....at least the seller described as ivory...to me it looks like fine gold on royal purple. and you can see even finer lines on reverse. decided to double check before posting photos.Thoughts?

No - double sided ones started this season The current doubles have MOSTLY mirror imaged printing - eg WOW - the central horse points one way on the front, the other on the reverse BUT printing can be read from either side - that is, the image was flipped except for lettering
on CDM: does the artwork point the same way with either print ? ie do the central horses point the same way or is one print flipped ? Same question for text on CdM. If the prints are flipped, then there were two impressions.
Are you seeing JUST one print that soaked through ? Or, is it two distinct separate impressions?

PS CDM is a true finesse - 2 colors exactly - field and artwork/impression
There should be ONLY ONE impression on the artwork
CDM is NOT like CROQUIS CHAMPS DE COURSES - a 5 color design with blurry/shaded lines (for lack of a better words)
