Well, a quick catchup post. I came back from my trip from Florida. The local thrifts shops had no interesting vintage Coach finds. A yucky , what appeared to me knock off Legacy Zip. There was a tan Dooney drawstring with a made in USA tag, but I just could not get behind it with all the Brits I already have. And a much loved black Casino bag (read beat to back and beyond) for $25. That has to be the fourth overpriced, down on their luck black Casino I have come across. The consignment shops had several nice contemporary Coach but none of them caught my eye for what they were asking.
However, I did get a pair of virtually unused black Dansko sandals for $20! Just in time for summer. That was my deal. And a few vintage scarves , a buck each and a cute INC top , $3.75. And thanks to all who followed the itinerary of my Sling bag:heart:;)

What a coincidence! I bought some Dansko sandals at Goodwill the other day too. I have a hard time fitting Dooneys into my collection too. Sometimes I see a nice one and I'm tempted but I just gotta draw the line somewhere!

I saw a lighter blue Dooney USA drawstring at a flea market today, but it looked like it had been dragged ! It was a super nice morning and I went out to flea market I went to last month. Prior to that I had not been there in over 10 years. A lot of Coach out there. I was targeting something in a bright color / straw or unusual (like that amazing find above). I liked getting my hands on different styles. I saw a small flight bag with short handles in black, NYC really really worn, handle unraveling! And believe it not, saw a Station bag for the first time in ages! They have a bit of heft to them. It surprised me. I ended up with a two dollar LL Bean mahogany satchel! I walked away from a beautiful light weight 4161 Hobo in light soft green $25! It was minimally used. I just didn’t see me using it.

Hey, another coincidence! My Coach radar locked in on a Station Bag behind the counter in a thrift store yesterday, but unfortunately (for me) it belonged to the woman who worked there!

Greetings all. Off the cuff question... Does anyone know where the common (incorrect) assignment of the name "Penny" to the style #9755 Pocket Purse, #9385 Shoulder Purse, and/or #9375 Dinky (and even #9635 Convertible Clutch for that matter) originate? Did some other brand employ that name for a similarly designed bag? Or is it from the much more recent (2012?) lined and shorter style #19914, #22387, and #22406 line?

None of those connections are right except the connection to the Dinky. The others are just the usual seller mistakes, misdirection and confusion

According to Coach Archivist Jed Winokur, the Penny style was the early version of the Dinky and included a strap attachment point consisting of a grommet through the leather near the top of the bag. When the strap attachment was changed to a D or O-ring attached to a sewn-on leather tab, the name was changed to Dinky.

Jed bought at least one example from one of our posters here, and when some of us, including myself, questtioned if another example with the same strap attachment was genuine, the poster/seller contacted Jed for more information.

These posts should explain it:

"Jed Winokur's Response:

...The green bag I purchased from you is a "vintage Penny" fromthe early 1970s. The Dinky is the same bag but with tubular handles. Yourversion pre-dates the Dinky by a few years and we have a number of thispre-Dinky Penny in the Archive so it is real. I consider all of these bags all"vintage Penny's" and there is a third version too also from the70's. The silhouette and size are the same on all of these bags but the strapswere different.

I am not surprised that you are encountering collectors who havenever seen these versions before. They are rare and you seem to have access toa lot of early 1970s Coach bags in Hawaii that don't surface very often! How many of these total do you have? I may be interested for the Archivecollection...

And the "1980 Dinky Bag" text is also puzzling given what the 75th Anniv brochure communicated (classic Dinky's 1973 intro).

I too am holding out for something tangible too, like the sketches found in the paper "catalogs" from the 1970s. Previously I had only seen pre-creed versions of this Dinky-sized bag with the grommeted strap attachment. But given that the burgundy one shown in the previous post did have a creed + ###-#### serial, I'm confident that the style should appear in a sales document from that period. Now the challenge is to find it.

Now I'm beginning to wonder, was the removable strap version in fact the original rendition from 1973? The ones made in advance (1972) would then have metal tags, with subsequent production articles migrating from the cartouche imprint (in the two locations we've seen), to creed stamps (1974 or so) , to creed stamps + ###-#### (1977 or so). Then, perhaps in 1980, the strap changed to the sewn-on version, which would explain the NYMag article text. If this were the case, then one should not be able to find a classic Dinky that was creed-only, no number. So my new question to everyone is now "have you ever seen a classic Dinky that was identified with only a creed with no serial number?".

Today's mail brought me a bit of a treasure: a mid-1970s pre-Dinky (unverified name "Penny") bag.
Dimensions: 9" x 5" x 1", skinny "double spaghetti" strap drop about 16".
Color: NAVY
