This rare bird (ha ha, flight bag:biggrin:) recently showed up on eBay. Is this called a Jumbo Flight Bag? Interesting that the inside pocket is sewn directly to the side wall...I haven't seen that before.

I believe that configuration (slip pocket front sewn directly to interior wall of bag) was standard for the #9706 Skinny Flight Bag (dimensions = approx 12-1/2" x 8-1/2" x 3-1/2") and it's tote strap cousin, at least from what I've seen. The other ("Jumbo"?) version of the Flight Bag is notably larger (approx 14-1/2" x 9" x 5-1/2").

The measurements don't seem much different from the regular skinny flight bag (12 1/2 x 9 x 3) so I wonder if it really is any bigger. That pocket almost seems like an afterthought. I've seen pockets like that on some bags, like the standard tote, but it is an additional pocket sewn to another pocket.

My skinny flight bags didn't have that kind of pocket. They had this type. I've had 4 of them and they all had the pocket attached at the top.

Huh? Really? I have 6 and they all have the pocket sewn on the wall like the rare bird above!! Mine all all stamped made in New York City.

ETA: were all yours the long strap version? I wonder if that's what they did for the long straps only and the short strap versions got the sewn pockets.

No, two with long straps and two with short straps. Here's two more.

Of course. Why do I expect some sort of rules they had followed? Of yeah that's right, I used to work in Quality Control. Another reminder of how inconsistent Coach really is.

What's odd is that in all the time we were looking, you never saw those with my type of pocket and I never saw any with your type of pocket.

My only IRL example was the long handled version (no shoulder strap rings). It had the pocket shown below. I too had only seen the ones with the same type of pocket, until now.

Okay my 2 cents: I have 5 skinny flight bags. All of the short handled ones (4 of them) have the sewn in pocket like that ebay listing. The long handled one which is british tan has the other type of pocket as in above picture. ETA they are all New York City made.

I wish I could start rehabbing right away. My toddler wants to help with everything and I don't want him helping me with this. This is MY project. I have to wait till the kids are asleep and I don't feel like washing bags at 10 pm. Lol! I will figure it out soon. Maybe I should just do everything in the basement.

I've only tried washing one bag but I find that the leather is not as soft after the wash, and this is after applying several coats of the Apple conditioner. It was an old nyc city bag so I thought I had ruined it for good. But it sounds like I could try using leather cpr... as soon as I can locate a reasonably priced bottle in Canada! Thanks for the tip!

I agree on trying Leather CPR instead of Apple, and using Blackrock for the final coat.

It's important to rinse very thoroughly, and use vinegar in the rinse. If detergent residue remains in the leather, it will seem stiffer.

One reason I wash the soft, older bags is to restore their shape. After the bath and conditioning, they are a little plumper and hold their shape better. If you carry them for a while, they loosen up and some of the softness comes back.

Thanks for the tips, Catbird9.
Could you suggest if anything can help fade out old pen marks? (Part of the reason why I was so bold with washing the bag before knowing anything about rehabbing is because of some pen marks the seller missed/forgot to disclose.. The blue pen marks are on the top and front of a tabac tan bag.... :s) I suspect the answer might be no but I’d really appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!
