Today's mail brought me a bit of a treasure: a mid-1970s pre-Dinky (unverified name "Penny") bag.
Dimensions: 9" x 5" x 1", skinny "double spaghetti" strap drop about 16".
Color: NAVY
I'm going to go out on a limb and theorize that what you have is what would have been referred to as a "first-generation" Dinky.

Based on everything I've seen, I'll posit that from its introduction in 1973 through to 1979, the #9375 Dinky was configured with the removable double-strand spaghetti strap (that attached to the bag via grommeted holes). In 1980, the design changed to the "classic" single-strand fixed (nonremovable) strap configuration that we're all familiar with and became the style that was produced from that point forward. Though I can appreciate that there have been other opinions offered, all the evidence so far suggests the proposed chronology.

IMO yes. I have both black and red. They do come by but definitely not as frequently as a Willis or a station bag.

I just joined this forum recently but from my binge reading of older posts on this thread (or maybe it’s another one...) I saw you have an amazing collection of red bags! How do you maintain them in such good condition? Just frequent conditioning? Or do you wash them every once in a while?

I think it is pretty rare. I don't know if that one will sell for that price. There was a gorgeous red one in new condition that sold at auction for $69 plus shipping. I think it should have sold for more. I was so tempted but I had just gotten another red bag.

I saw a brown one on Etsy last year selling for around $45USD but that bag was definitely in rougher shape. The seller also didn’t know it’s name so this bag has been a mystery to me until today! $69 for a red one sounds like a steal.

Thank you! Honestly, I have yet to wash/ rehab/recondition most of them! Those in the picture are still in "as found" condition except the mini red tote! I'll get to those eventually after I get rid of my rehab pile. I only use Leather CPR to condition bags. I think most of us in the rehab thread only give our bags one bath and then apply conditioner several times. I haven't repeated washing any bags once I finish reconditioning them. There is no need.

Thanks, I appreciate your evidence-based approach! It's too bad there aren't more surviving catalogs from that period.

I sometimes have to rewash my bags. I have some that I use to tote dinner to work and that gets messy. I guess you could just say that with use some bags have to be washed again after a while. They lose their shape. They get crumbs and things in them, suncscreen residue, dirt and scratches. Also occasionally if I don't get a spot out completely I might come back and rewash a bag later. I have a couple I would like to do that to right now. I should do it since I'm trying to take a break from buying to prune back my collection a bit instead.

I have a different rehab habit to you houseof999, I tend to wash my bags as soon as I get them, I often can't wait! It's the fun bit. It's selling them I never get around to, even if I've made up my mind to do it.

I've rewashed one bag. It was the first vintage Coach I ever found, my first-ever rehab, a NYC Classic Shoulder Bag 9170 from a local thrift store (lucky find!) The first time I dunked it, I don't think I left it in the water long enough to completely saturate the leather. About a year later I decided to give it another bath, having learned a lot about rehabbing in the meantime.

I tend to wash and condition them them as soon as I get them. At first I would fall in love and want to keep almost every bag I rehabbed, but now I'm more selective and only keep the ones I'll actually carry. Even then, I still find myself holding on to some bags just because I enjoy looking at them. I condition them whenever they seem to need it.

I wish I could start rehabbing right away. My toddler wants to help with everything and I don't want him helping me with this. This is MY project. I have to wait till the kids are asleep and I don't feel like washing bags at 10 pm. Lol! I will figure it out soon. Maybe I should just do everything in the basement.
