Thanks for responding. This style seems to be a new one for everyone here and the strap design isn't like anything we've seen before.

If Jed can give a style number and name and when it was made, that would be more than enough for me. He's more than welcome here any time, as a reader or poster. I think everyone's concern is that we've never seen - or never noticed - that kind of strap mounting before, and it just seems like it wouldn't be the best way of attaching a strap. Maybe it was just a short-lived style that was either discontinued or modified to change the strap fastening when Coach realized that there was a better way of doing it. The only times I've seen straps clipped directly through grommets have been on newer bags, mostly fabric styles, and they've had extra-large grommets that can handle the stress of the strap.

The reason I mentioned the Dinky is because of the measurements and the pocket arrangement since those seem to match how Coach describes the Dinky in their catalogs. Maybe there was an earlier version? I only have one catalog from 1983 which seems to be when the Dinky was introduced but the book shows a sewn-on tubular strap. I can't find any other small bags with the same design features but like I said, there aren't a lot of catalogs available from the late 70s and early 80s. The style is also a bit older than the time period I'm familiar with.

Jed Winokur's Response:

Hi Lauren,

The green bag I purchased from you is a "vintage Penny" fromthe early 1970s. The Dinky is the same bag but with tubular handles. Yourversion pre-dates the Dinky by a few years and we have a number of thispre-Dinky Penny in the Archive so it is real. I consider all of these bags all"vintage Penny's" and there is a third version too also from the70's. The silhouette and size are the same on all of these bags but the strapswere different.

I am not surprised that you are encountering collectors who havenever seen these versions before. They are rare and you seem to have access toa lot of early 1970s Coach bags in Hawaii that don't surface very often!:) How many of these total do you have? I may be interested for the Archivecollection.

On a separate note I have actually been meaning to write you aboutthe Tan Slim Clutch ($159) and the Navy Slim Courier Saddle Bag ($749) you havelisted. I would love to add to the Archive collection but I will not havebudget until end of the summer. Is there any chance you could put them on holdfor me? The Archive is internal but I do bring vendors in from time to time sopossibly you could deliver/visit when you and your husband are in NYC?

Hope this info is helpful. I am sure that the collector who hasbeen writing about your bags would be interested to know this info too!

Very best,

Jed

Hyacinth,

I would respectfully request that you please remove the original post stating that these bags are fake. I feel it does damage my reputation. In light of this email from Jed, I feel this matter is now resolved. If you have any questions or concerns, please respond. Sincerely, Lauren.

It is authentic. I'm not sure of the color. I would guess taupe, which was a color from 1996.
