And, because I actually AM employed as an SA and can say for sure, there's nothing in the SA contract that says you must be an abject doormat to the whims of every customer that comes in the door. You still get to be a human, whether customers want to treat you that way or not.
It's cliche, but this is why everyone should have to work in the service industry for awhile. It gives you some perspective on how millions of Americans get treated every day.
i'm going to have to agree with what intlset said, even though i'm an SA as well (i sell high-end appliances). the people we're complaining about are those that have treated us unfairly, and those people are not doing their jobs and deserve whatever treatment they get from the customers that they are insulting. i would never do or say the things that these SAs we're talking about do because i'm a professional in a place of business. i'm paid to perform specific duties and i respect that. those duties are friendliness and helpfulness. i'm not paid to be in a bad mood or have a bad day, and i'm certainly not paid to take it out on unsuspecting customers. they don't come in to talk about my feelings, they come in to find out about products. if these SAs want to keep their jobs, they should perform them for all customers.
i think working retail has made me harder on SAs, because good customer service is really not difficult. before i worked retail, i just assumed it must be horrible so i really couldn't blame them, but it's not. most people are at least cordial, if not very nice. i've had customers offer me as much as the free use of vacation homes, bring back food for my department, and come back to say hi and chit chat when they come back to look at something else in the store. people really aren't as freakishly horrible as most people in retail make them out to be.
