issue with Borough hardware

It's alarming and dismaying to me to hear that so many of you are now going through the same thing, especially since the alpine moss was/is such a beautiful, rare color for Coach. :( I'm sorry. Perhaps if more of us continue to speak up at stores, Coach will do something to resolve the problem...? At the very least, I'm happy the SAs seem just as confounded as everyone else and are willing to accomodate replacements or merch "switches" (however you want to word it). It does bum me out though, because I had been looking forward to the all vachetta borough this spring. Not willing to chance it, though.

I just want to thank you, Coach Cruiser, for bringing it up:)and I am just glad I found out in time, before I started using the bag...and the good news are is that Coach did change the hardware on the new generation of boroughs:) But the questions is now what will I do if my new Alpine Moss will arrive with the old hardware:)

alwaysalcazar, no problem! :) but i'm so curious, if you don't mind me asking, how did you find out that they changed/improved the hardware?? And yes, of course, I hope you get the new and improved version!!

I don't mind at all...while in the store, I took the longer strap from my bag and longer strap from the new bags with silver hardware and we compared them side to side and the differences are apparent...the color of the finish (the older ones are lighter in color) and the weight (the older ones are more light) and lastly the way it was made (the older ones have this line on the bottom, like some plastics do, it is hard to explain...but for sure, the older hardware (from the first generation) was made differently...hope it make sense:)

It looks to me that this hardware issue might only be with Alpine Moss, since I just got back from the store and carefully looked over all the other boroughs with the silver hardware and they all had better and improved hardware. We really had to compare it side to side with my AM to see the difference and I am very glad that my SA was very understanding and she was as amazed as I was to see the change in the hardware. However, I do love this bag and I decided to give it another chance and ordered another one in hope that they might of have changed the hardware in the middle of production...and so I keeping my fingers crossed that the one I get will have better hardware. By the way all the gold ones looked fine to me.

Just confirming that you are correct. When I called my SA (who is a long time Coach employee - almost 20 years) - did the same thing - compared the silver hardware on the Alpine Moss with the Silver on the new Chambray. She said they are definitely different. As I mentioned in another comment, the Alpine Moss all have the same hardware as the original shipment. Both what is left in JAX, and anything left in the Coach boutiques. My first thought, was to order a new one from JAX, however, she spoke with them, confirming hardware never changed on the Alpine Moss - and advised me not to order another.

I think the pitting and black markings are probably comparable to rust - or mold - or, for lack of a better word, fungus. I really don't think you can stop it - or know how much, and how long, it will take to spread.

Jan1124, and others... Do you believe all the Alpine Moss (i.e, each and every bag individually) will suffer the same hardware problem?

Based on what I've read - and what my SA told me - I do think that all of the Alpine Moss hardware will eventually discolor, pit, corrode - all probably at different speeds - and in different amounts. After reading - how quickly it happens depends on the temperature, humidity, where it's kept etc. (it's basically oxidizing - "patina" - but not in a nice way). My son referred to it as "patina" - I said no - patina is what leather does - however, after googling, it refers to metals too. (one reference was copper artwork - or tarnished silverware). I think in the case of our hardware though, it's an inexpensive metal - coated with silver plate - sadly, like cheap costume jewelry. It can't be polished to remove the discoloration - once it's pitted and corroded, it's history.

If enough people complain - maybe Coach will remanufacture the Alpine Moss. As some have mentioned, they replaced hardware on some in the Kristen line - and to my knowledge, they didn't do repairs, but had new stock re-done, then replaced yours when they had replenishment.

This news is all very bizarre and totally unfortunate, considering Alpine Moss was and is one of the prettiest colors. I think it's also unusual because Coach usually has great hardware. The chambray and silver both have silver hw, I think -- two colors I've had my eye on, but I'll restate it again, I'm scared to go the borough route. :(

It's ALSO irritating that the boroughs are at the outlets, period. I'm seriously happy for women getting a bargain, but if they're buying the alpine moss, they're going to run into the same problems we did. It's a shame.
