How many bags are too many bags?

I was just joking about respecting the bag.
It sounds like you are properly storing your bags.
What I'm talking about photos I've seen of people who have 100-150 bags on the floor, piled up on top of each other, and the person has no choice but to step all over the bags to get to their clothes - something a hoarder would do.

LOL! I think we can all agree that if you are hoarding bags, you might have too many!:roflmfao:

My goal is to move most of my bags up there, and switch them out every week. This way, I'm forced to use them all.

This didn't work on me. When my collection was much less, I put all my bags in my bedroom but as they grew I had to convert extra room to become my walk in closet. Ever since then I don't rotate bag as often as I used to.

But then I think, if I need to "force" myself to use certain bags, shouldn't I just sell them off?

+ 1! My friends noticed I only carried few of my favs too. And they suggested I sell the rest of bags I hardly or no longer use. I just can't part with them.

I feel like I have too many bags, but I struggle to stop buying them. I don't wear them everyday as I work in a clinical environment and am still at university, so tend to wear Longchamp Le Pliage's a lot. I have a list and mark down whenever I wear a bag, but obviously with me having so many, none of them have been worn that much (the bag I've worn the most is my LV speedy B, and 15 times). I hope nobody minds me starting this thread, but how many bags do you personally think is enough/too many? I just had a count and have (oh god...) 32 which feels completely shameful! I just don't know how to start downsizing. Has anyone any advice?

You will get a looooot of different opinions on this question. Some people have 200 bags and are still buying. Some are horrified with more than 3. Some people buy bags just to have a collection with no intention of wearing them. Some people buy "the" one bag for them and wear it till its worn out. So there is no right answer except what works for you.

That being said, for downsizing, I try to only keep bags that I wear. I have around 30 bags. I change out almost every day and keep a log of what I wear. My benchmark is that if a bag doesn't get worn at least 4 times in a year, I consider selling. But sometimes this is harder to do than others. I am on a couple of ongoing threads with some other wonderful TPFr's and they are great at giving me advice and keeping me on track with keeping the right bags for me.

I guess my question for you is why you feel the number of bags you have is "shameful"? Maybe start there and decide what you think is the right number for you and your life. Then you can take a hard look at your collection and downsize slowly - perhaps on bag every couple of months.

Good luck on your journey! I'm sure you'll come to a comfortable and happy place. 😊

In my rational logic theory, I say beside the work bag, there should be another one/two for dressing up and dressing down, so if it's more than two or three that will be TOO MANY. on the other hand, my irrational logic tells me as long as purchasing handbags won't get you and your family any financial difficulties then go ahead as many as you want. Lol

I have around 15-20 designers handbags sitting in my wardrobe plus some more cheaper random unexpected purchased bags lying somewhere in my storage, mainly I only carry ONE big bag that I got it $50 from ZARA for my design class for five days a week,(I have loads loads of heavy stuff to take with me everyday,I need to toss it on the floor whenever I have to)amazingly it held up very well. I only can use my collection during the weekend(with 2 little girls, I can't have a wide range to choose), what can I say, we know all the theories but sometimes it just doesn't work that way. Haha.

I feel like if you are using the bags that you have, then you don't have too many bags. When you stop using the bags but still keep them, then you have too many bags. Why keep something you don't use? I have about thirty bags but all of them get used. I would say about half of my collection is used during the fall/winter and the other half during the spring/summer. Once I quit using a bag, then I look at selling it.

I love my little collection and I know it will grow. At the moment I'm only using my LV totally mm but I need to carry a lot lately. My others are fendi peekaboo selleria, celine small edge and Chloe Marcie. I think I like jumping around with designers. I'm keen to get a Chanel, delvaux or Hermes roulis bag in the future. So basically I don't feel like I could have too many but my collection is really small compared to others on here.

I have had up to 40 at once but also sold quite a few since I started collecting. I love them all and can't stop buying but I feel I have too many. Some are there just because I like them though never use them.
This year I started out with 38, now have 33 and out of those 33 I am looking to sell at least 5 more if I can get the right price for them.
I think the how many is too many question is a personal thing for everyone. I guess my main reason for culling is that I no longer have space in the closet my bags are in and so some have had to be stacked outside it. Therefore there is too many and I miss some I never used that I have sold but honestly if they were still here I still wouldn't be using them.

One question I have for those who have a smaller collection and / or feel they only need one day bag. How do compliment your various outfits with a very few bags? Is it that you see the bag as a separate entity and it has no relation to what you're wearing? Is it that you get a neutral bag (color, material, design?) and it fades in the background? Is it that you see your bag as a functional piece and aren't interested in fashion implications. Or do you wear more of a uniform (same colors, same clothing pieces) so you never have to mix things up because your bag goes with your uniform. Or, ....?

Thanks for answering. I've always been curious about this because I need a certain number of bags to have the range to compliment my various outfits and would feel I'm missing a "fashion opportunity" (phrase I made up just now lol) if I don't have the right bag for a look.

But, if there is another way to approach things than I'm aware, I'd love to hear. 😊

Not sure about others, but for me I have many bags but only tend to use a few of them. I use what I want to use on the day. I don't switch as much as I used to, I just don't have time to bother with that these days.
I don't ever really match my bag to my outfit or season really. I just get out what I want.

get out of my head woman, LOL I've always wondered this same thing. And me buying a new bag [even though I already have plenty at home] comes from 1 of 2 things, either A, I absolutely LOVE the bag, and it's beautiful or B, as I'm getting dressed and looking for a bag to go with my outfit, I'm like oh man, I wish I had _______________ type of bag, that would be perfect with this outfit, so I seek out a bag that will fill the deficiency. Just as I take care in choosing my clothes daily, I take just as much care in choosing the coordinating bag.

Not sure about others, but for me I have many bags but only tend to use a few of them. I use what I want to use on the day. I don't switch as much as I used to, I just don't have time to bother with that these days.

the bags you wear often, do they tend to be more neutral? [i.e., Black goes with everything] or do your bags sometimes "clash" with your outfits?

although, as an aside, I would say what's "fashionable" today doesn't necessarily have to match. some of these trends mix bold colors and patterns, which is something I never do. I have a much more conservative take on fashion.

Most of my outfits are relatively neutral so it wouldn't matter what bag I had. But the bags I use the most are pretty neutral in colour.
I mostly wear the same sorts of things over and over I'm not overly fussed on that side of it as long as it looks ok.

I feel the same way you do. I have a lot of bags (stopped counting lol) but keep buying them. I actually just bought 3 w/in the last month. I definitely recognize that I have an addiction.

I don't have much advice other than for myself to stop looking on line and at the store.
