How many bags are too many bags?

Not sure about others, but for me I have many bags but only tend to use a few of them. I use what I want to use on the day. I don't switch as much as I used to, I just don't have time to bother with that these days.
I don't ever really match my bag to my outfit or season really. I just get out what I want.

I'm the same way lately. I admit that I used to have a lot more bags when I was a bored housewife. My only source of adult social interactions during the day was with other bored housewives. Sure I volunteered at my kids school and other venues but it became an excuse to buy stuff. Since we tend to gravitate to the mall by the end of the day before school pickup. Having been back to work for the last few years, I've slowly downsized my closet and only kept the items that I truly love. I haven't stopped shopping but I'm much more critical. My bags does not have to match with my outfit and I'm fine with it.

One question I have for those who have a smaller collection and / or feel they only need one day bag. How do compliment your various outfits with a very few bags? Is it that you see the bag as a separate entity and it has no relation to what you're wearing? Is it that you get a neutral bag (color, material, design?) and it fades in the background? Is it that you see your bag as a functional piece and aren't interested in fashion implications. Or do you wear more of a uniform (same colors, same clothing pieces) so you never have to mix things up because your bag goes with your uniform. Or, ....?

Thanks for answering. I've always been curious about this because I need a certain number of bags to have the range to compliment my various outfits and would feel I'm missing a "fashion opportunity" (phrase I made up just now lol) if I don't have the right bag for a look.

But, if there is another way to approach things than I'm aware, I'd love to hear. [emoji4]

This happens to me when I'm traveling and I have a lot of outfits but only want to bring one purse. I pick something that goes with all of my outfits and it's usually a metallic silver purse. Silver goes well with my bright summer colors and even with dark colors! Also an extra plus if the purse strap can convert between crossbody/shoulder/clutch to do double duty.

Like most others have said here, I don't think there's a set number for "too many bags" that applies to everyone. That said, I think you have too many bags if:

  • You can't remember what they all are. If you can't even remember them, how much can the ones you forget really mean to you?
  • You can not properly store them.
  • You have bags you don't even look at at least once a year. If you don't even look at them, what is the point?

That said, I have a minimal collection with just 4 bags. I personally can not imagine owning more than 10, but I also have a very easy lifestyle.

I think of myself as being fashionable, but I wear mostly black, so I don't need lots of different colored bags to coordinate. I carry very little with me, usually just phone/keys/wallet, so I don't need a variety of different sized bags either. I only get a bag when I find one that I think is better than the bags I already own, and that averages out to about one new handbag a year. I have no problem getting rid of an older bag when a new one comes in. I like being current. I really really love each bag that I have for the time that I own it, and I don't think I would be happier with more bags. I think of myself as preferring the color/shape/bag of the season and then updating each year, instead of keeping a rainbow of bags. I am the same with clothes.

I use scarves a lot.
And wear colored bags.
With colorful shoes.

Usually, repeating a color 3 times looks intentional. Rather than random.
And scarf often ties in both clothing & bag/shoe colors.
So I do not appear uber-matchy. In fact, I rarely do--probably clashing tragically. ;)

I own 11 bags.
Which feels a lot to me.
But is fun.

Yes, do look @ bag function over fashion trends. But do not ignore design/look.
Would not see me carrying bag shaped as a hamburger or telephone, because "is adorable & whimsical touch for outfit."

Hope helps.

I only have 10 bags in all, 3 of which count as "functional" ie a mulberry cross body that's my dog walking bag, a big (bright!) mulberry tote for carrying books, and a Tods coated canvas tote for when it's pouring with rain, I don't use them for anything else. The remainder are relatively plain bags in subtle colours that complement but don't match things in my wardrobe - I'm really not keen on things being obviously matched (which I think helps these 7 bags go further, if that makes any sense, and enables me to spend more). I have a few less bags than I used to, but I consider purchases more carefully, so I have a good idea what I'll be buying next - which helps resist impulse purchases.

currently I own 5 bags, of which three are for work, one is for formal events and one is for fun - I plan on adding a H Birkin but this will take quite some time, a LV pochette in epi, which I plan on getting soon, and a LV Toiletry 26 pouch as a day clutch.

This has been a recent development, I used to be all about as many bags as possible but I recently realised that I am not happy to have many expensive bags, jewellery, shoes etc, I'd rather have a few great items that I am using.

Same here, I went through a patch of buying a lot, and then selling them on after only a short while. Realised it made me feel unhappy.

I used to be the same way for many years but I finally got tired of it. I used to have one bag( and it was black , of course), 5 pairs of shoes ( including home slippers) and a minimalistic wardrobe. Very minimalistic.
Times changed. I got married. Then I got overboard and just started to buy everything , especially on sale. Maaaaaan....
Now I am somehow balanced. Based on my ability to use all those things I bought, after they stayed new with tags for years and went to donation place, I decided to downsize- I determined I need no more then 6 dozen of clothes, two dozen of shoes and a dozen of bags. Works pretty nicely. I use everything I have and enjoy it at the same time.
My 6 dozen of clothes: dozen of shirts/blouses, dozen of tops, dozen of pants/jeans, dozen of sweaters/ outerwear, dozen of home/sleepwear and a dozen of miscellaneous( those for special events, beach vacations, snow vacations and such)
I determined I need 6 bags for everyday use, each carried twice a year for about a month( I live in a climate with two seasons-"summer" and "not so summer", so changing bags helps to remember what part of the year it is), couple bags for special events (for light colour and dark colour outfits), couple nylon crossbodies for travelling with a couple of matching carry-ons( light and dark color again).

This made me laugh out loud!

the past year or so, ive tried to purchase items that i only use frequently, and then replace the items when they wear out. I've pretty much stuck to it!! the last purse i bought was an impulse buy- a used stella mccartney bucket bag, but i love it! that was in november 15, and i havent even looked at bags since then. i still frequent tpf, but i really only lurk in the jewelry forums now. i have 10 bags, and theyre all from special occasions!
