My answer to their first question is now "I'm not sure it was a gift" coz it leaves them with nowhere to go

This have become my go-to line for EVERYTHING for the past several years. It is the perfect answer. I might have to find something else to say soon, since my paralegal just said yesterday, "Everything you own is a gift." :p Hmmm....

My sister (who introdiced me to the bag-drug with her real gift of a Paul Smith Satchel) once had a stranger come up to her in the street and say:

"you people make me sick with your bags and fancy shoes, it's people like you that caused the recession"

What kind of economic ignorance would cause someone to think that? Sounds like a very mentally simple person. So rude.

my SIL on my bags (I got into bags a year ago):

1."you know, I'm just worried things might get out of hand..."
2."you know, not everything is for everyone..."
3."well, for someone who's unemployed you managed to get a pretty nice collection."

me: 1. "don't worry. really, DON'T. I still pay my rent, bills, go out and eat what I want."
2. "actually it is - it's called capitalism. if you get the money for it you can buy it. if I wanna give a few things up to get a designer bag it's my personal thing."
3. "yes, well, for someone who's unemployed I made 3000 $ last year"

(I'm looking for work, my parents support me until I get a real job, so everything I make from freelancing I can spend on myself)

she still borrows my bags...

I ran out of the house last night late for a meeting and it was pouring! I ran back in the house, put my LV in my Longchamp pliage so as not to get the vachetta wet and stained (didn't have time to change bags), and dashed back out to the meeting. When I got inside, I realized that I would be given several papers, so I took my LV out of the bag, and started using the Longchamp to put the papers in. One of my friends said, "OMG, is that a bag for your bag?????" She said this in front of others. I told her yes, because the rain leaves stains on the leather. She's a friend of mine and I don't think she was intentionally trying to call me out, but I totally felt embarassed because no one here probably would have done that! As it was my umbrella had barely worked with the heavy rain and I was really wet. At least my bag stayed dry! :)

At least my bag stayed dry! :)

^yes and so did your papers!

Your office mate obviously didn't make the connection you were not only protecting your LV but saving space when you carried them both into the meeting. The Longchamp came in handy afterall in more ways than one :)

My rule of thumb is that I never take my expensive handbags to work. I don't find that that's the time or place for them. The colleagues that I notice with expensive, designer bags at work, are always young women. Maybe they haven't gotten yet the importance of not standing out, in that way, at the work place. I've been in my profession for over three decades.

There's enough pettiness going on at workplaces, so why add possibly more? And then when the budget cuts and cuts in work hours are on the board, then there's not any sympathy for those flaunting their expensive handbags at work. And yes, it's not fair, but hey, life is not fair. And, yes, there are those who drive expensive cars to work and folks don't usually care about that, well, not where I live. But, when it comes to an expensive handbag, then noses turn up and a lot of caddy women will talk. So, leave the expensive handbags at home and use them on weekends. Use the T.J.Maxx ones or no label displayed ones for work.

Wow..I just read this whole thread..and it was intresting, while I have gotten looks here and there. I did a year as an Americorps Vista, and this one girl would always assume the purses were not mine but our leaders, she would give me looks everytime I would walk into our meetings with one of my purses. I even had my Vista leader tell me once "when you live with mommy and daddy you can afford to buy expensive handbags", she said that after everyone was admiring my Coach poppy bag.....I said nothing because she was my leader but I was upset.

Yep, A girl told me my Louis Vuitton Denim bag was "so last season". I told her it probably costs more than she made all last season. LOL Childish yes but it made me feel better.

My close friend said to me about my Balenciaga (Anthracite First RH) :
"OMG your bag looks so cheap, it looks like it's from the market!"
Me: *stunned*
"At least I won't get robbed!"

It's OK I'm not that offended, I used to not get what the hype surrounding Balenciaga is all about, until I got one myself.

I always get asked if my designer bags are real. I don't really take offense normally but I can't forget the one time someone even stroked my Speedy and went, "Hmmm...well that's cos you earn a lot of money" then grinned.

I also have a friend who said, "I will never ever buy a Louis Vuitton. It's stupid how so many people carry it." With this one I don't think she realised my Damier NF is an LV as well when she made this statement to my face. The same friend totes a D&B logo bag around town.

I've never had an insult, but once a lady asked me how I find anything in one of my huge bags. I showed her the inside - it's actually not chaotic in there.
