Bag Insults - Ever Had One?

Of course, I have, but I ignore. I’m not carrying a Walmart bag everyday because it does the same thing. I’m hard on bags and buying a cheapie is a waste of money. I’d rather have one good bag.

Those same relatives are the same ones that have their hands out when I do a closet clean out.

Oh, yes! One can still be demented and crafty! My mom certainly can. The stories I could tell you from her aids! However she seems to have acquired a late-life appreciation for vintage Coach so it's not all craftiness and insanity.
Be thankful, some demented people become meaner as they lose their minds. My MIL being one.
She was a cun5 before but now without filter, it is Defcon evil

I DO sympathise-although my younger friend just doesn’t understand vintage at all either, -I can use my 2011 H Tsako knowing that it didn’t cost me a fortune (I’ve just been to Waitrose and came back with a lentil cottage pie in it, something I wouldn’t do with my other bags)- and just thinks I should thrift it and donate it to charity or even literally throw it away!
I don’t think she thinks I’m trying to social climb as I’m not even sure that she knows what that is lol!
And if I Did buy a new H she would think I was mad-although if I bought a new Chanel probably not, we’re going bag shopping on the 1st June for a day out and I think I’ll stun her with the amount I intend to spend-last year we went out and she came back with a DKNY bag..I nearly bought a BV that day, but was overtired, this year I’ll be better prepared..
I have a preloved vintage Chanel flap and was recently asked by a friend (although not a very close one) why I don’t just replace it with a new one, could I not afford Chanel’s new prices?

On one hand, I took this as a sign that it might be time to book a bag spa for my bag - I have been dithering on this cause I don’t want that vintage look to disappear.

I just responded with “I like it as it is” and did not bother explaining vintage because I know that this friend has a mindset about preloved (can’t afford brand new, trying to social climb with preloved, etc).

So odd that young people can be ignorant or uncaring of the environmental factor of just tossing away perfectly good items and replacing them with new. It's not just the item in the landfill/ocean/incinerator that is the problem, but also the fact that now a new item has to be produced to replace the old one.

I thought that longevity was part of the reason why people say one should spend more on a bag. If you are just buying to show off how much you afford and look down your noses at the people who buy pre-loved, does that really say great things about you? There are excellent reasons to buy used goods besides "social climbing": 1. you want to help the environment by not contributing to the problem of too many goods being produced and shipped; 2. you want a quality bag but don't have the money to buy new but you can afford used; 3. you like the design and story of the brand name bag but can't afford it new and/or you want to keep it out of the landfill; 4. maybe you do have the money for new, but you choose to spend the extra money on something different; 5. you want a bag that isn't made anymore. I'm sure there are plenty of other reasons besides social climbing that bring folks to the pre-used luxury goods world.

Also, what the heck is wrong with someone buying used if that's all they can afford? Some people want to sell their bags. Others want to buy those bags. No reason anyone else needs to be snobby about it. Reminds me of the people throughout history who insisted that only certain classes could wear certain garments so that you could tell who was really the "right sort." That friend sounds like she's really just annoyed that because used bags are a thing, that people might think her bag was used and that (gasp!) she might be able to only afford a used bag.

I think you guys are smart for keeping what you love and for staying true to yourselves under the snide comments. Shows your better character, really.

Ironically my friend is quite well off and Could afford designer bags but chooses to spend her money on holidays, straightening her already straight teeth, perming her eyebrows (?), etc..
She knows that I do Intend to buy new H one day(when I lived in Paris I bought my JohnLobb shoes from FSH H), but atm I have a very sick Siamese cat and other priorities this year, and it would be irresponsible to buy anything other than preloved H this year..
I hope that next year I can look back at this and be relieved that I survived the year…it’s not the easiest, but with the support of PF, I carry my 2011(full of soya milk lol), with a big smile, knowing that it’s not forever..
This year I have other priorities , I’m still bag shopping, but I’m quite a way from H SO (and my dream of H Horizons).
Luckily for me, there are preloved H on the market, although atm my Tsako is my only preloved bag..ironically atm my most often carried bag.

I'm sorry your kitty is sick. I love animals. My doggo needed surgery last summer and that took a massive chunk of our budget. But what can one do? They are loyal friends and part of the family.

Yes, she has incurable renal failure at only 4- I also have 2 healthy orientals, I’m a happy cat Mom, they cost me a fortune!
I love my bags, will spend whatever I can on them, but this year is all about Tammy..so this year is preloved-or exotic from another brand, that’s how it is..
I’m so sorry about your doggy..I hope he’s ok this year(he?), there’s no such thing as a cheap vet!
But I don’t have kids-although I DO spoil my gorgeous niece, who shares my love of bags..to the disdain of my sister, who carries a rucksack, so I buy her or gift her designer bags, so the cats are my babies..
Next year I should have more bag money-atm I have a long wishlist which I’m trying to summarise ..but tbh the Tsako is great as I know I’m carrying H, it feels special but I can literally do what I like with it!

Thank you, yes, he is doing very well now. He had hyperparathyroidism which could only be cured by removing the enlarged gland. There was no other long term way to fix it. It was surgery or euthanasia. I've had pets my entire life and they are expensive but so worth it!

I'm getting a bag wishlist together as well. I don't really know a whole lot about the higher end brands and decided that a good way to learn a little more about each brand would be to use the TPF brand forum list and pick my favorite bag from each brand. Not that I'll buy all those of course but it is fun to research.

I don't think I've ever had comments from strangers that were negative, I tend to catch flack from relatives (particularly the parents- despite my dad pointing out every LV bag he sees), "oh another bag, how many do you need?!" "and how much did that cost" etc. My sister loves to tease about how I pick ugly bags (ie. not her style), it's all in good fun in my family (mostly).

I'm not fussed, it's my money, I earn it, I pay my bills, how I spend my leftover income is on me.

Haha my grandmother was the meanest cun5 around (we never got along), and regularly escaped from the dementia ward at her care home... once for 6 hours. Funnily enough my love of 'nice' things came from her... and my love of gin :graucho:

Poor dog, that must have been heartbreaking, at least surgery was an option..

PF is a great source of knowledge ..before that I’d carried my croc Jimmy Choo since new(although I’ve owned Chanel)- but I’ve discovered brands which are looked on very highly here, now on my wishlist, although my true love will always be exotics..
My wishlist atm for this year is a mix of vintage and affordable other brands although I have a wishlist already for next year of more expensive bags to look forward to.
I gift unwanted bags although I Did sell a couple, but my niece is about a foot taller than me(!), so needs much larger bags, so I give my mini bags to my Mum, who has dementia but still loves her bags..my niece turns 21 next year, but this year also I’ll give her a designer bag for her birthday despite my sister’s moanings..hopefully eventually I’ll have the collection I aspire to despite the fortune I spend on my beloved cats!

My Mum has dementia but is really lovely and gentle, just talks gobbledygook ..I was around there on Saturday ..she took a handbag to bed and put it under her pillow, it was really cute..I’m giving her one for Mothers Day on 19th March-she keeps them by her bed in case anybody breaks in lol..she’s regressed to childhood …it’s really sweet, hard because it’s my Mum, but not agressive, I couldn’t cope with that..but Loves her bags!

I'm sorry, it's a horrible horrible disease, my mum really struggled watching her regress- I never saw her after my grandfather passed away (when she was still with it), as I said, she wasn't a nice person before the dementia.

That's so sweet and it's lovely that you can engage with her at least about bags! :hugs:I wish you and your mum the best!
