Maybe they were originally planning on a zip compartment and changed their minds. Or couldn't tell the difference between a pocket and a compartment.

My own personal opinion is that most of Coach's middle and upper management, facing the possible loss of their jobs with the upcoming skedaddle to China, probably spent much of the late 1990s whacked out on all kinds of controlled substances to ease their pain. That's my theory and I'm sticking to it. Here's more proof if it's needed:

Strange things were happening at Coach as the turn of the Millennium drew near...

:giggle:
:) Well, we know the more current "namers of product" don't know the difference between an owl and two penguins.

Dear ladies, when you get a chance please check this out...thanks oodles in advance
Item: Vintage Coach Women's Black Leather Crossbody Shoulder Bag
Seller & Site: ilonasb on ebay

Comments: The serial gave me bad vibes and upon checking here, that was confirmed, for what seems the same bag. However, I do not feel comfortable in calling the bag fake, because I cannot read the the style number well. And Coach made sometimes equal styles in different sizes.

Hi, I got this backpack on shopgoodwill. https://shopgoodwill.com/item/181168548 I was waiting for the bag to arrive so I could photograph the creed for you--they didn't show one. The creed patch is really worn. Thank you for an opinion on authenticity!
shopgoodwill.com, seller: Goodwill of Central & Southern Indiana
Item: Authentic Vintage Coach Black Leather Drawstring Buckle Backpack
Size: Big! Seller says 15 x 12 x 5. Serial L8C-9064.

It's genuine but whoever stamped it screwed up the serial number, I keep seeing 9564. The only info on 9064 is in the 1999 Preview paper catalog, p21, (prices valid til June 30, 1999) which I don't think we have saved in the catalog thread and I don't have a scanner.

"NEW" Legacy Backpack, #9064, $338.center zip compartment, inside pocket. Adjustable back straps. 11 1/2 x 13 x 5 1/2. Mahogany with Nickle, Black with Nickle"

The only postable pic I have:

Thank you. That's interesting. "Center Zip Compartment." This bag doesn't have that. ? It's wide open inside, with an inside zip pocket along the back wall.
FWIW, I'm seeing 9584 (or maybe 9684).

First is original, second is brightened and defined.

Hello Authenticators!

I was going through the thread and this request that was deemed authentic has an N factory code, which I understand might be an odd blip. For education purposes, I was wondering what clinched its authenticity please. My admittedly untrained eye would have instantly dismissed the bag as fake. I look forward to your response.

I also wanted to say thank you for sharing your time and expertise so freely and with enthusiasm - much appreciated!

Thank you and have a great weekend!

Can I please have this bag authenticated. I purchased it at a local flea market and it looks and feels a little different from my other coach bags. I really appreciate the work you guys do!!!

For reference, this is the post with the authentication request linked above:

In the case of the request and bag you linked to, the N factory code was correct for the bag it was on, the text on the creed and when and where the bag was made.

There are also plenty of fakes with "N" plant codes but this isn't one of them. There are multiple factors that are considered when evaluating a bag (or any item) and everything is correct for the bag in question.

The bag is authentic although it appears that whoever put the bag together placed the piece of leather with the creed in the wrong location.

Normally station bags have the piece of leather with the creed inside the main storage compartment but in this case, they used it for the back wall of the outer front pocket.

thank you so much for your quick reply . I do have to say it's in beautiful condition but the hardware seems a little lighter brass than my other coach vintage bags. Maybe I forgot I cleaned it earlier and just now had it authenticated. LOL

I forgot to ask what year do you think this bag is? Again I appreciate your opinion.
