After reading this thread, I rushed and grabbed 2 boxes Bbags and check my Violet City (purchased at AR) and LE Magenta. I am so happy with superb quality of City Violet. When the LE Magenta arrived, I was so exciting and took pics and didn't spend times to carefully look through the leather in detail. Here it goes, when I double check my LE Magenta, I found at least 2 nail scratches on the back, I thought, I can life with those little scratches as I am not that picky, but as I turned the front of the bag, I got abit upset because I can see several NOTICEABLE scratches on the leather. I know that maybe each bag can't qualified as perfect bag, but if I spent almost $ 1,200 and waited months, I don't want a bag that has noticeable scratches that is NOT caused by me. I just get really upset because I do like the color and the leather. When I checked the care and maintenance page, I found that several girls have problem quality with their LE Magenta. I hope that they are doing something about it if they want to keep their customers.

Damnit, I just checked my most recent bbag purchase - Ocean SGH and the leather on the front pocket is noticeably different from the leather on the rest of the bag. The leather on the front pocket is very smooth and matte looking with no distressing but the rest of the bag has heavy distressing. I was really disappointed to discover this.

I'm definitely calling BAL NY and letting them. This is ridiculous.

i couldn't believe my eyes when i saw that the piping on the bags were totally different color from the body of the bag. it stood out so much!

There seems to be a pattern of this color difference happening a LOT with the recent bags. They really do need to look into this issue because it's unacceptable!!

well, i'm not a racist when saying i dont want to pay that much for a bag made by chinese, but really upset about "made in china" instead; or made by anytype of illegal workers.
why why would they do that?

dont worry im chinese too but i dont feel that its insulting at all(:after i read the MSNBC article im wondering. why do we have to spend so much money on buying goods that are probably worth just as much or maybe even LESS than replica goods. its so insulting. if this goes on. there wouldnt be a difference between buying replica and real anymore. :cursing: We pay high amounts for the quality and durability of the bags and yet these luxury brands are bringing in illegal untrained workers to make THESE bags just so they can earn more business profit. this is totally unfair and infuriating. somebody needs to write a letter to Balenciaga. perhaps a petition that all of us will stop buying their goods ( on this forum) if they do not PROMISE us goods with good quality and durability.

xoxoxo

:wtf::mad:
I am so so angry right now!!! Not only are we getting taken advantage of, but possibly workers from other countries as well? You know damn well they are getting peanuts for hours and hours of hard labor, and how could I look at a handbag and not care more about that then this piece of leather I am carrying around? So we all get screwed and the designers and the head companies who own all these labels get billions of our dollars, making it off of some(many poor souls) poor souls blood, sweat, and tears!!!
:censor::sick::rant::throwup:

I find this very disturbing. I read both of the articles. I feel bad because I stopped buying Coach because I thought it was expensive for a mass produced bag, And I returned my Francesco Biasia Bag bacause the interior said MADE IN CHINA, but the inside authenticity tag said made in Italy and their website says MADE IN ITALY. The SA at Nordstrom was surprised when I showed this and then they said that the inside material was made in China( the lining) but the rest was made in Italy.
I wonder if my Chloes are made in China? They seem to be made incredibly well, without visible flaws.
Being new to Balenciaga, I was surprised to see the variations in the tassles and leather- especially with my Violet City handles showing white where the shoelaces go through . Like the holes were made too big, maybe to possibly double loop the string though like other styles.
There must be someone on this forum , who can go visit the Balenciaga factory....woudn't that be cool? Then we'd know for sure if there was no factory in Italy or if the workers were underpaid Chinese immigrants...

Thanks RDC for posting links to the articles. I had no clue!!!

I have no complaints with Balenciaga's quality nor customer service I've received so far.
I've been buying Bbags and Bal clothe since spring 2002, and I've never experienced anything negative.

I do believe that while imperfections such as leather characteristics are part of vintage aesthetic of Bbags, quality imperfections are just unacceptable.

My 07 bags are flawless, as my older bags:yes: However, I've seen a lot of "flaws" on new bags here on tPF. It just makes things really scary to buy these bags sight unseen!

What I've heard is that Chinese workers have been moved into Italy to do the production work there so the Made In Italy is not a lie.

Here's are some articles about it:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/6926181.stm
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19388728/site/newsweek/

Back just a couple years ago 2004/2005, Balenciaga's production levels were WAY LOWER than they are today and the years before that were even lower...and as such it was really difficult to get a B-Bag as a normal shopper. There were not enough B-Bags to go around for every one that wanted them, today you can just walk into or call many stores and order what you want. They aren't all sold out in the first day or two the stock arrives, not because we aren't buying them but because they are making so many more bags than before.

Million thanks - that is so very very educational. I think that I may revise my buying habits considerably now.

Hi - I agree with you on this. People on the Chloe Forum talk about QC problems but my Chloe bags are really superb - great leather, precisely finished, arrive in perfect condition and last really well too. Can't say the same for my recent B-bags.

Hmmm.. very very interesting... I wonder where mcBag got this information from. I would like to know which article it came from & what source. I'd like to look further into this before getting :hysteric:

McBag got the information directly from a book recently published called, Deluxe--How Luxury Lost its Luster by Dana Thomas. Check any bookstore or your local public library oogiewoogie. Thank goodness for a free press!

Post from McBags (a TPF member) RE: QC issues with highend bags
"An excellent book that just came out is Deluxe--How Luxury Lost its Luster by Dana Thomas. She has a chapter on designer handbags. See below for some of points she makes in this book:

1. "...the profit margin is astounding: for most luxury brands the profit is between ten and twelve times the cost to make the item. At Vuitton, it's as much as thirteen times." According to Miuccia Prada, "The handbag is the miracle of the company."

2. ""Yes, luxury handbags are made in China. Top brands. Brands that you carry. Brands that deny outright that their bags are made in China make their bags in China, not in Italy, not in France, not in the United Kingdom.

...Each brand made the manufacture sign a cofidentiality agreement stipulating that he could not reveal the fact that he produced their products in China. Furthermore, the manufacturer doesn't let the competition know who else he is producing...
The change came in the mid-1990s when Coach decided to move a small portion of its production from the United States to China. Coach's stock value increased a whopping 1,270 percent in the first five years ...other luxury brands quietly began to look into producing leather goods in China.

3. "The brands have little tricks to get around the China label. One brand's "Made in China" label is actually a sticker affixed to the outer package. The luxury brand rips it off when the goods arrive in Italy and replaces it with a "Made in Italy" label. Another has the entire bag made in China except the for the handle. The bag is shipped to Italy, where the Italian-made handle is attached.

4. The following lists are not complete:
Louis Vuitton Moet Hennesy (LVMH) --It has more than 50 brands. Some are Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, Dior, Bliss, Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs, Celine, e-Luxury.com, Duty Free Shoppers (DFS-majority owned)
Gucci Group--YSL, Sergio Rossi, Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta

Independently owned--Armani, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Hermes, Chanel..."

So, what's the bottom line ... is Balenciaga manufacturing their bags in China now, or are they still manufacturing in Italy (possibly with some of their workforce being undocumented workers)?

I see that Balenciaga is one of the design houses manufacturing in China, according to the above article...

I am so glad that this thread has started because I recently purchased my first BBag and after wearing it a handful of times (maybe 10), the bag has started to fall apart. I took it back to Barneys to the SA that I purchased it from and he said that he had to speak to his manager to see what they could do. Normally he said that he would just send it back to BAL to be repaired but considering the condition it was in, he wants to see if I can get a refund or exchange. Here are some photos:

"On one raid, ten undocumented Chinese workers were discovered in a sde-street sweatshop, machine-sewing clothes. There was a child present, beds, a bathroom and a kitchen. They slept, cooked, worked and brought up their children in this small warehouse."

"My whole family is here: my uncle, aunt, mother, father and sister," 18-year-old Cheng explains, standing amongst racks of thousands of T-shirts, skirts, trousers and dresses.
"We work very hard," he boasts. "Sometimes day and night!"

They can undercut the prices - and the wages - of their Italian counterparts. They may be paid as little as 2 euros an hour (£1.50)"

One of the reasons i do not buy fakes is that i dont want to contribute to those poor workers being used and abused...but it looks like i am paying thousands for that exactly !

i dont mind my bags made by Chinese people, as long as they`re skilled, trained, deliver good quality and they are paid a human salary ! sadly it is not the case..im not ready to sell the bags i have, but i honestly dont see myself buying another 1500$ and up bag after reading that article! :cursing:( having issues with 4! out of my 7 bbags anyway :sweatdrop::cursing::sweatdrop:)

That's a great idea Nataliam. These companies need to take note that if they want us to buy their products they need to provide a quality product. I'm pleased to say that I've had no problems with my 7 Bal bags, but now I'm scared to buy a new one in case it has problems, especially as I buy them sight unseen. I hope Balenciaga will take notice, and a letter documenting so many faults is sure to make them take notice.
