I don't think this problem is exclusive to Balenciaga. I think the quality of high-end bags in general has deteriorated since about 2004-ish. I remember when this happened actually. It was when Marc Jacobs bags became all the rage and then high-end bags in general became much more in demand. Unfortunately for us as consumers this is a case of us eating our own dogfood.

Very true Roo!

Post from McBags (a TPF member) RE: QC issues with highend bags
"An excellent book that just came out is Deluxe--How Luxury Lost its Luster by Dana Thomas. She has a chapter on designer handbags. See below for some of points she makes in this book:

1. "...the profit margin is astounding: for most luxury brands the profit is between ten and twelve times the cost to make the item. At Vuitton, it's as much as thirteen times." According to Miuccia Prada, "The handbag is the miracle of the company."

2. ""Yes, luxury handbags are made in China. Top brands. Brands that you carry. Brands that deny outright that their bags are made in China make their bags in China, not in Italy, not in France, not in the United Kingdom.

...Each brand made the manufacture sign a cofidentiality agreement stipulating that he could not reveal the fact that he produced their products in China. Furthermore, the manufacturer doesn't let the competition know who else he is producing...
The change came in the mid-1990s when Coach decided to move a small portion of its production from the United States to China. Coach's stock value increased a whopping 1,270 percent in the first five years ...other luxury brands quietly began to look into producing leather goods in China.

3. "The brands have little tricks to get around the China label. One brand's "Made in China" label is actually a sticker affixed to the outer package. The luxury brand rips it off when the goods arrive in Italy and replaces it with a "Made in Italy" label. Another has the entire bag made in China except the for the handle. The bag is shipped to Italy, where the Italian-made handle is attached.

4. The following lists are not complete:
Louis Vuitton Moet Hennesy (LVMH) --It has more than 50 brands. Some are Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, Dior, Bliss, Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs, Celine, e-Luxury.com, Duty Free Shoppers (DFS-majority owned)
Gucci Group--YSL, Sergio Rossi, Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta

Independently owned--Armani, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Hermes, Chanel..."

p.s. Personally, I will no longer spend $$$$ on BBags until they address their QC issues and Chanel too, because their prices will have an increase (on Nov. 1st) of one-thousand dollars for Classic Flap bags in a little over one year along with increased QC issues as well.

Stating the obvious, companies have no incentive to change or improve the QC issues of a product if people keep buying them. Also written feedback by the consumer to the manufacturer is prudent.

whoo...
they need to fix that and if it's true that bags are being made over china then....wonder why fake is getting better and better

Exactly. That is infuriating on many levels. The conditions Chinese workers have is so awful. So besides the alleged lie to place of manufacture, then there is the fact that potential workers are suffering for pennies a day, while the profit margin is so huge for the company. That is my first concern actually, besides the deception being my obvious second concern. Not to mention the fakes and open that can of worms. I wonder if this alleged manufacture change to China happened between 05 to 06 somehow? Just thinking about the change in QC? Wow.

i think it is sooooo rdiculousssssssss that lux. brands start moving over china to increase there profit. we know for sure that it wont cost half the amount we pay for a bag, but also their "brand name". so, they made a lot from selling it, why would they have to move to china. it very upset me

I am beyond appaled and disgusted!!! :wtf:

To pay more than $1k for a bag made in China???
To replace the tag of Made in China to Made in Italy? That is deception!!

*shock!

Is it really true that the such LV and Bal are made in China? :wtf:

^^ Damn, an undercover reporter needs to start working with the bag distribution chain for a while and scoop the story of the century and expose all these f**kers. I'm sorry - but if this isn't being taken for a ride (a very expensive, more than a plane ticket, more than a mortgage payment) type of ride, then the anger is justified.

I'm sure bal. hates ebay for all the potential sales they could have made directly but screw them. I love their bags. Always have (hence my earlier post about loving older ones more which I do), but these companies need to get a serious wake up call. Somehow.

When the the '06 Bal. bags came out - there were alot of complaints to Bal NY and other Bal. retailers. I think sales dropped off quite a bit - plus there really weren't any pizazz-y colors. It appeared that Bal. took note - my SA at Bal. NY kept telling me that the "powers that be" had heard the complaints and taken note. So.......the leather, in general, improves at the cost, I guess, of other quality issues. My point is - we all need to complain loud and clear. I just received a violet step that looks perfect (haven't checked the extra tassels yet though) - but no one should have to worry about these issues. It's totally ridiculous - and if we all (or any of us individually) put up with it - then I think we are partly to blame. (BAL LOVERS UNITE!!)

Hmmm.. very very interesting... I wonder where mcBag got this information from. I would like to know which article it came from & what source. I'd like to look further into this before getting :hysteric:

What I've heard is that Chinese workers have been moved into Italy to do the production work there so the Made In Italy is not a lie.

Here's are some articles about it:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/6926181.stm
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19388728/site/newsweek/

Back just a couple years ago 2004/2005, Balenciaga's production levels were WAY LOWER than they are today and the years before that were even lower...and as such it was really difficult to get a B-Bag as a normal shopper. There were not enough B-Bags to go around for every one that wanted them, today you can just walk into or call many stores and order what you want. They aren't all sold out in the first day or two the stock arrives, not because we aren't buying them but because they are making so many more bags than before.

i have to say when i went to balny to check out marigold cities, 3 bags were taken out for my to look at and i couldn't believe my eyes when i saw that the piping on the bags were totally different color from the body of the bag. it stood out so much! needless to say i passed on it. however, i love my violet SGH work to death and i cannot find any flaw in it at ALL. it's completely perfect.

but they seriously have to do something about the dye batches.

Thanks RDC for the links to those articles. I had no idea....

LV has had quality control issues with their vernis leather - I was so happy when LV came out with their sky blue and pink vernis leather handbags - this was years ago - can't remember exactly when - but within one year, both my pink and blue had faded horribly. LV said via their SA, tough S**T. I quit buying LV for three or four years - I have bought a few bags intermittently, but was so angry with them, I have never felt the same about their lines. So far, all of my Balenciaga bags have been wonderful! But if I did have problems, and if Bal didn't respond, I'm sure I would have the same emotional response that I did with LV.

well, i'm not a racist when saying i dont want to pay that much for a bag made by chinese, but really upset about "made in china" instead; or made by anytype of illegal workers.
why why would they do that?
