What’s your unpopular Hermes opinion?

I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion, maybe popular, but here goes mine:

The modern Hermès customer is a masochist. The mental energies devoted to quotas, prespend, influencers, lottery appointment, how to be supplicant towards SAs (!!!!!), have shifted the focus from appreciating the bags themselves to navigating a complex social interaction where one party is in a position of power and the other is essentially begging for the opportunity to make a purchase. This dynamic disempowers the customer and shifts their attention away from the actual merits of the bag, such as its design, materials, craftsmanship, how it fits into their personal style, and ultimately their enjoyment of the bag/s.
This is probably one of the most thoughtful posts I’ve ever read on here. I agree with every single word.

My unpopular opinion is (for now) I’d rather avoid the drama of the Hermes game and just pay 3-4x the price for a birkin on the resale market. I’m not crazy about other H products for the price that they are. I don’t want to clutter my home with a bunch of fine china I’ll end up accidentally breaking or bracelets I’ll never wear yet purchased for the hopes it’ll bring me one step closer to the thing I actually want to buy.

Just caught up with the Hermes in Print thread and saw a press description of this scarf https://www.hermes.com/us/en/product/is-this-a-love-story-scarf-70-H984043Sv10/ as a "charming tale of an equine-meet cute". What is this? The descriptor is as bad as the design of the scarf being described.
What did I just read? And can I go back five seconds and not have read it?

Probably not an unpopular opinion: I do not need a story for every item I buy. Like at all.

Despite being old, I would describe my style as somewhat eclectic; I'm not really very traditional. Alas, I often find, this scarf being one instance, that 'juvenile' just isn't that interesting....
Agree on every point. I can live with the speech balloons on this scarf but the actual verbiage is so silly (trust me, you don't need to translate). Whimsical is totally ok by me but not this puerile not to mention the outdated reinforcement of gender stereotypes.

This makes me sad because it seems you are the sort of client H doesn't care about at all. It's OK to just want one bag! They would rather produce cartoon scarves to get young clients to "start their journey" into the game.

The scarf stories have always been head-scratchingly ridiculous. Huh? Like they were auto-translated through 5 different languages and ended up a garbled mess.

Clients who take bag offers that they don’t like and then go on sm lamenting the purchase and asking whether they should sell the bag. They comment they don’t want to make their sa upset or they don’t want to miss out on an offer because they don’t know when they next will come. They talk about being sad or conflicted over a bag.

What does H have over them that they feel like they must kowtow to the brand? Why are they in such a rush? Where are their backbones? Self respect? What kind of psychological witchcraft and sorcery magic is H working on that has such a hold over these clients? Dear Lord.

On a different note, someone recently commented to me that etoupe looks like 💩 and now I can’t unsee it.

Yes! I can't hate their strategy from a business standpoint but I also don't even want to waste my time and energy to not even be guaranteed the bag I want. As someone very peculiar about what I like, I just don't have the energy to spend a ton of money, wait around, and hope and pray I get the bag offer.

Adding to this...just being "sad" or "conflicted" or actually in TEARS over a five figure bag purchase that might be the "wrong" color or leather. We're all here because we care about bags, but how about being happy that you can afford such a bag? (Or five, or a hundred...). Most people in the world don't earn that much in a year. Emotions around a purchase sure, tears is seriously pushing it.

My additional unpopular opinion is that this is actually very little to do with Hermès. We see nearly the same behavior around Chanel. If there were no Hermès, some other brand would be the object of desire. Scarcity as a marketing tactic is nothing new; H just seems to be very very good at it ;)

This reminds me of that famous Youtuber who broke down in tears after getting dumped by her SA. In a way, I sympathized with her because I did feel her SA was a bit rude, but in another way it was such a major first-world problem issue. I think it all goes back to the psychological games the brand plays - making clients feel they must take their bag offers even if they don't love it, making folks prove their worth for a bag, etc. It is all so sad! These bags should bring immense joy and excitement, not stress and sadness.

Well, on evilbay you can see all the housewares and blankets people bought for "pre-spend"
On topic - unpopular opinion. "PRE-spend" ??? It's spending, LOL.

A related UO on getting things out of proportion - I don’t understand the complaint that current resale prices make other people think a H bag owner spent $30K on their bag, when really it was “only” $10K. I doubt very much that the other person would say “oh, only $10K? That’s all right then!” Wherever you buy them - whether you pay retail or resale - in the real world even the cheapest of H bags are astronomically expensive and out of reach for most people.

I love seeing all of your Birkins and Kellys in action shots, but... the Bolide 31 will always be my personal favorite Hermès bag. Its discreet beauty and perfect functionality just make my heart sing every single time.

Rubis seen here at the beautiful Williamsburg Inn in Virginia...

I’ve never seen this scarf before and am weirdly disappointed they didn’t go there and make it a tribute to Equus which is what I was getting from the description .
Agree, it’s very literal and a bit too twee.
I suppose the unpopular opinion is Hermes waxes on about their horse girl heritage a bit too much in general. Making fine saddles is one thing - feeding hungry horses out of a picotin is another ;)
