What is "pocket-watching"? Sorry, I am clueless on this one.

…. watching and monitoring how someone is making and or spending money… monitoring or speculating an aspect of another person’s life…. usually done in jealousy or tied to some form of inferiority or self-consciousness. In this case influencers or new shoppers, their finances or being able to afford luxury, ie Hermes, or not.

my unpopular opinions:
1) Are we not tired of watching Mini Kelly unboxings? I know I am. If it were a practical bag that could fit your phone at least i’d understand the hype but I feel like the mini bag trend is over and it’s end was long overdue. People only buy it for the hype and “rarity”.

2)I wish people, on here especially, would stop pocket-watching influencers buying Hermes and talking down on influencers like you’re better than them in some way. And as if an influencer couldn’t possibly actually like Hermes for anything more than the status it might possibly bring. This also applies to comments made about new Hermes shoppers. I see a lot of passive aggressive comments made about H newbies and how they can’t sustain the H lifestyle. How do you know that? Sorry not everyone can be grandfathered into a 10yr SA relationship. We all start somewhere. Have some class!
Girl, preach. I think the mini Kelly is cute, but would turn it down every day of the week and twice on Sunday. I'm never buying a bag I can't put my phone in. Second, the condescension is exhausting. Frankly, it sounds like jealousy. I think people get too hung up on whether influencers had to prespend, truly love the brand, or can afford it. The gatekeeping is insane. It's a freaking purse. Lol.

THIS. Thank you! What is it about this particular brand that seems to bring out this behavior? When looking at the other Premier Designer brands and their shopping threads, I see a lot of fun and laughter, and genuine joy when other share their experiences with those brands and their purchases...and zero judgment about how they shop, what they do for a living, where they live, how they dress, etc. But THIS subforum?? Good grief. :hrmm:

(Obviously, not everyone is like this, and many seasoned OG clients of Hermes and members of the forum have been wonderful, supportive, and possess a wealthy of knowledge - and have been incredibly kind and patient with newbies. But there are others who seem to think that if someone doesn't live in an ultra high-end neighborhood, or drive a particular car, then that person can't possibly be a legitimate Hermes client and must be broke.)

Exactly. It's a PURSE. It's not that serious...

Luxury shopping is supposed to be fun. If folks are not having fun and getting all in a huff about what others are doing and spending and getting offered, it might be time to take a step back and reevaluate.

And I guess the not-so-unpopular opinion about the Mini Kelly: I too would turn it down. It's too darn small!

Um, if I see posts like that concerning judgments re other TPF members, I report them. (I don’t know anything about influencers). The report function is there in part bc members are supposed to refrain from rude or inflammatory commentary. Having said that, many OGs, myself included, take breaks from TPF which can span a number of years, bc one does get tired of drama.

Many of us remember more than one discussion years ago about how specific groups of people buying Hermès were "bad for the brand", and worse things, much of which thankfully was eventually deleted (the infamous "Cardi B thread" is a good example that remains although the very worst bits are gone). This gatekeeping isn't new. You can find these discussions in the very earliest days of tPF.

Exactly! Lol I honestly would love a Kelly Pochette because at least that can fit a phone and a few essentials but the MK II is just impractical. At least for me, i know others love it.

Yes it just reeks of gate-keeping. Let people enjoy what they want to buy. It’s not like Hermes is giving these bags out to them for free anyway!

I’m hoping that all those orders got cancelled. These folks also seem to have multiple accounts. And how can you go in store to pick up so many bags?

I lost much faith in H and H.com because of these posts. At least have the decency (and the business discretion!) not to flaunt it

I am very put off by the blatant “flashing” of these practices. I’d hope Hermes flags accounts like this, but alas it appears as it does not. What a shame. Personally, I’ve been trying to buy an Evelyne online and it has shown to be quite elusive for me.

My related unpopular opinion:

Regardless of whoever pretends otherwise (SAs, fans, PR firms, …), Hermes *wants* this, and I hate this strategy of theirs. It’s hilarious to me when anybody pretends otherwise. If you shop at almost any other luxury store, the vibe is NOT judgmental or if it is, it’s a problem SM addresses (my sister happens to be in the business but as a director, still obviously knows about brand stuff from floor up). I have never once been judged or not felt welcome at, say, a Dior store. *Most* luxury brands operate with a “you never know how deep their pockets are today or tomorrow” sort of system (in my limited experience, only some European countries and some American states). I’m not saying they don’t keep the best stock for VIPs or something like that, I mean the actual attitude and feeling. This translates to the customers, too. Because the VIBE isn’t like that, it’s less likely for the customer who likes that vibe to themselves say “omg how dare Cardi B carry the same bag the ever-amazing *I* carry?”

Again, they can handle stock however they wish, but I do wish they wouldn’t encourage snobbery.

Maybe my experience with Dior and Hermes are anomalies, but it was exactly the OPPOSITE. In fact, I vowed never to shop at a Dior store because the service was horrendous. Then I met my Hermes SA, who was friendly from day 1. Maybe it's a southern thing. I went in to buy a pair of Oran sandals and he treated me like a queen from that day forward. I told him I was in the market for a Dior book tote but would never buy from the Dior boutique across next door because of the service. He picked up the phone, told me "you just need a better SA! I got you," and he called his husband, who has been my Dior SA ever since.

I'm not even close to VIP and I get great service. I got my first Birkin offer when I was in sweat pants and no make up. In my humble opinion, Hermes isn't responsible for the snobbery. Those people are just snobs and Hermes didn't make them that way. They would be snobs if Hermes didn't exists. Just saying...
