Am flirting with Hermes GP-went from 8 Chanel bags which I still have to LV because for business purposes- was not comfortable carrying Chanel in front of my clients. LV in some leathers and prints is not that ostentatious so more comfortable with them. Was ignorant of Hermes GP at the time, and think it may suit my purposes. However LVs seem indestructible and like that quality.

I'm new to h, having migrated over from LV and Chanel, and as much as I love and would want a birkin, the fact that it's hand/arm carry, really makes me pause too and to be honest, I don't know if I'd really be comfortable carrying something so luxurious. I've been looking for something similar, but with a strap, and now that LV has made the city steamer in grained leather I find myself thinking about it. Even though it fits the bill of what I want (right now), I hesitate because I've been bitten by the H bug.
I think the city steamer is a really gorgeous bag. I've never cared for the looks of the Birkin (my wallet thanks me) but the Kelly is THE most perfect handbag ever in my opinion. HOWEVER, I will never own one. I know myself well enough to know that if I ever spent that much on a bag it would sit on my bedroom dresser and I would stare at it 24/7......it would never see the light of day. I would be so scared of ruining it, I'd never carry it. I know myself well, what I can live with and what I can't. Good luck with your decision of the city steamer.

I went LV>Chanel>Hermes. I now find my Chanel's somewhat ostentatious & don't mind the LV however I only use for specific purposes.
I wear mostly Hermes now & own a GP 36 & really love it. She's been getting a lot of use the past few months. I wear handheld, & on my arm & shoulder. Mine is Negonda leather & seems to hold up well.
Totally recommend it!

Why don't you try a preloved Kelly? Also, there are some Hermes leathers that are hardier than others

I understand your feelings about not using your bags because of their beauty &/or your affection for the style. Many of mine sit in the closet. I'm not proud of it but love to know I own one & might get the courage to wear it ... I have periodically & the occasion is more special

Thank you for that recommendation.

I have three GPs and use them as workhorses. The handles can be a little short to wear over the shoulder -- I can do it, but it can get a little tight over a heavy winter coat. Other than that, it's a great bag, beautiful and sturdy and more under-the-radar than some other H bags. I highly recommend it!

I can't tell you how many times I've said, "if they made the Birkin with a strap, I'd want one." I think that's why the Saint Laurent Sac du Jour is so popular -- it has a shape similar to the Birkin, with that oh-so-useful strap. The City Steamer is a very beautiful bag. If you love it and will use it, get it!

I agree, the Kelly IS the most perfect bag ever! I have two vintage Ks, and yet, there are still times, and situations, where the Kelly isn't the best, or most appropriate bag. Of my two Kellys, one spends a lot of time in the closet (red box leather) and the other gets used pretty frequently (vintage, fully-patina'd Barenia -- worry free but heavy!). It's good you know what you can and cannot live with -- if a bag never gets worn, it can't be the perfect bag, even if it IS the perfect bag, KWIM?

I'm the same, fear of ruining a beautiful bag is another con for birkin/Kelly. If not a Kelly, how about a herbag? I just got one and I love it. It pretty much satisfies my Kelly thirst and I'm not a nauseous mess carrying it because I'm afraid I'm going to ruin it lol.

To go back on topic, bottom line, I think people need to just buy what they like. If you like it and you know you'll use it, buy it. I'm going to take my own advice and stop overthinking and do just that [emoji38]

Thank you - which is more attractive, negonda or calf skin leather? And, is one lighter in weight? The negonda for some reason is less expensive. Thanks again!

EXACTLY, it's perfect, but not perfect for me. I'll stick with my picotins, evy and jige. THEY are perfect for me.

I have been going back and forth on this one - I need a proper tote for most days and the NF would totally fit that bill but as I stated elsewhere, most of my students carry a real or fake one, so I decided to go for Tod's Joy tote that even zips shut - leather, found it much cheaper and less common.

having said that, I try my best to look into LV bec of the comfort of canvas (I had several LV bags over the years that I have all since sold) - I tried the SPeedy b and I don't like how it sticks out and I am not a fan of the speedy sag but I totally get why people are a fan of it - and I prefer to get one of the permanent bags - one thing that bugs me about LV is the constant change of models, which affects resale value. I would certainly get it in damier ebene rather than mono, definitely more carefree :). If I go back to canvas I would get damier ebene again - I had epi and that is durable but scratch prone and too stiff for my liking.

You are right! I wear my Picotins, Evelyn, & GP much more than my 2 Kelly's.
I do not wear my Jige much though am considering another one in a neutral color. The one I have is vert anis. It's sort of neutral but I am thinking black or Bleu nuit for the cooler months in the US. Which color do you have?
