Wearing engagement ring to sleep?

Hi all!

I've done some searches and read a lot about when and where you gals don't wear your engagements rings. I thought I read in a thread that it's bad to wear your engagement ring to sleep. I personally don't do that as well because sometimes it's uncomfortable but I recently got a new ring and I want to keep it on me as much as possible. Is it actually 'bad' for the ring if I where it to bed? I'm a pretty still sleeper but will I mess up the prongs or something with the sheets? I have a 6 prong solitaire. Any insight would help!

It depends on who you ask! ;)

I don't have a set pattern - sometimes I take off my rings...if I do that, then I have to wait about half an hour after I wake up to put them on...since my fingers swell. But...I'm old, so that might not apply to the younger ladies!

Aside from comfort it is actually not good to wear them to sleep for a few reasons:
1) the friction from it rubbing your sheets will wear the metal down faster
2) if there's any roughness to a prong it can snag on a thread on a blanket or sheet which could lift the prong or break it off even, and possibly lose the stone.
3) you might whack your hand off something like the headboard and damage the ring, or actually bend it to where it damages YOU, or you could scratch yourself or hurt your husband/fiance sleeping next to you!

I don't for those reasons AND bec it's just too tight on my finger when I sleep, my fingers are little sausages.

Bisbee - haha you're too funny. My fingers swell too. Normally I wash my hands with cold water and then my fingers shrink instantly!

Ame- thank you for your info! That's good to know. I guess I will just have to say goodnight to my ring and look forward to wearing it in the morning. I still wear my wedding bands to sleep though. It' has baguette stones. Perhaps I should take that off too.

Ame is absolutely right about all the reasons you shouldn't wear your rings to bed. The constant sliding over the sheets is a big stressor on your prongs, the risk of banging them is very high. That said, I sleep in my rings. I can't bear to not have them on, I love them so much! And if I don't sleep in them I have to wait a few hours before I can get them on, especially in summer. But I do have my prongs checked regularly, I loupe them regularly, and am aware that I may be damaging them and they might need a repair. I also have six prongs so that gives some more protection. My rings are very simple though, if I had complicated pave work or anything like that I would be more careful.

Same reason why I don't want to take mine off! My husband had proposed with his grandmother's ring and now he got me my dream ring. I just never want to take it off! As I'm reading what Ame is saying, I'm checking to see if my prongs have rough edges to them! Haha

Chichi143 - what's a v prong?

Ducky- I have a princess cut so the V prongs are around the entire corners of the stone. It protects it better than normal prongs, so I've been told. I've banged it tons of times and no damage to stone or prongs yet.

I'm sure there are cases where rubbing gold or platinum rings on sheets have worn down or damaged them. I'm sure someone has caught a prong on a thread and that led to some damage.

I'm also sure that I've lived on this earth for 61 years, I've been wearing rings for at least 40 of those years, and I've met a lot of people and discussed jewelry with many of them...and no one has ever told me that they damaged their rings by wearing them to bed.

YMMV... ;)

That's very true! I would have never thought twice about wearing my e-ring to bed if it weren't for this forum. I educate myself through all you gals but sometimes I find it gets me a bit paranoid as well. I'm glad for the info Ame gave me 'cause now I can make an informed decision!

In 7 years I have only taken my ring off to clean it or scrub my hands. Oh, and it HAD to come off in my last month of pregnancy - I was HUGE and my fingers were too swollen. I have never had an issue
