Wearing engagement ring to sleep?

Laugh all you want, it happens.

Don't take it personal. I just find it amusing:smile1:
I suppose the only scenario under which I could see any actual "damage" occurring, was if a prong got caught in a bed sheet. I have been wearing my rings to bed (necklaces, watches, and earrings too) for my entire adult life (I just turned 40 this year) and I have never had a ring snag. In general, sheets are pretty soft & smooth, much like the prongs on my ring are smooth (and rounded). I just don't see it happening, which is not to say that it can't happen, but I'm not the least bit concerned.

I guess I'd rather be in the know and if I do choose to sleep in my ring and I happen to damage it, I know I did it to myself!

I don't believe that you're going to damage your ring in the least. As for the argument of a prong catching on the sheets, banging your hand into a headboard or, friction from the bedding.... You could catch a prong on a sweater, bang your hand against a countertop or, wear the band by opening lids of jars. All these events are more likely.

You'd have to be a pretty wild sleeper to damage your ring, in which case, I think there's another thread for that... :D

You're hilarious! I'm not a wild sleeper as far i know!

And oh gosh yes I've banged my ring on the kitchen sink already. It was a heart stopping moment!

I'm sure some kind of damage can be done while sleeping. And it could depend on your luck too. I banged my original ring on many things and the ring looked fine but it could also only take one snag or one hit. I wanted to know the risks of wearing it to bed and I have the convenience of this wonderful forum to seek advice from. I appreciate any comments/advice. It's up to the person whether the risks are enough for them to take your ring off before bed.

With the exception of my two best friends and my mother, everyone else I know never take their rings off and it shows....they look dirty. My sil has a very good quality stone, it's D color and fantastic quality but I winced when I was watching her put sunblock on my nephew at the beach and thinking about the sand and everything else, yikes! But I was looking around people watching and I saw many women wearing their e-ring sets at the beach. I don't wear mine to the beach or in the pool.

But wait this was about wearing it to bed lol. I take after my mom I don't usually wear my rings unless I'm leaving the house. And my two closest friends don't wear their rings ever, they're in a vault I'm guessing. I have asked them both to wear them as I enjoy looking at them. But one I've never even seen bec. she needs to resize it, hasn't worn it since she had kids 8 yrs. ago!

As for sleeping, I wouldn't wear rings for the reason Ame said. I just wouldn't risk it, plus it's not like you can admire it in your sleep lol.

^I (almost) never take my rings off and my rings are always clean and sparkly. I have an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner and polishing cloths for quick touch-ups, so they are cleaned/polished on a regular basis. My MIL takes her rings off (for sleep, showers, etc.) and her rings are always filthy. It's not about how much you wear them - it's about taking care of them and cleaning them on a regular basis. Taking your ring off each night before bed isn't going to do anything to keep your ring clean if you never clean it in the first place....

True! I hardly take my rings off, I clean them with a baby toothbrush and a drop of dish soap while they are right on my finger in between soakings. Dirty rings bug me.

Do you think I pull this out of my a$$? Ask a seamstress that worked with fabric while wearing rings for 40 years how many times they've had their prongs redone, and how thin the back of their rings are. You don't have to take it seriously, but it's not something I just made up to scare people.

Well, I wouldn't have put it in those terms, but to be honest, yes, I do think that you are pulling this out of your a** (again, your words, not mine). I don't believe that fabric can wear down metal, even in your example of the seamstress. I think it's ludicrous:weird: Like I said before, I could see *maybe* a rare instance where a prong could get snagged on a bed sheet (or a piece of fabric), but it's never happened to me and I've been wearing rings to bed for 20 years.
There's really no need to get defensive. This is not a personal attack on you or your opinions. It's just a discussion and we happen to disagree. Let's agree to disagree and move on:flowers:

I know, dirty rings bug me too! The only times I ever really remove my rings is for cleaning or when I am applying lotion or sunscreen. In addition, my DH owns a medical equipment repair company ad he has access to some of the same equipment that professional jewelers use. About once a year, he professionally polishes and cleans my rings (in a commercial-grade ultrasonic cleaner). I would be WAY more concerned about the annual polishing wearing down the back of my rings (and making the metal "thin") rather than my bed sheets, but the backs of my rings are just fine and do not appear to have noticeably thinned at all:yes:

I believe what Ame has said is valid but the degree of damage will probably depend on the type of ring, the person herself and also how she sleeps. If you ask me if I think sheets can wear down the platinum of my ring, logically I would say no because sheets are so soft and platinum is so tough. But I wouldn't throw away the idea that it could.

ame - I know that gold can be worn down by years of wear. I have my father's wedding band, which he wore for 48 years before he passed. It originally had faceting on the band - it's almost worn down smooth - but I wouldn't have it any other way!

As far as fabric wearing down rings - your example of a seamstress is really a whole other ballgame than sheets rubbing on rings during sleep. A seamstress touches a LOT more fabric with her hands than any one person would ever experience in their sleep - and again, she is working with her hands, which would result in a LOT more contact.

We should probably put this to rest - I know you are a bit OCD about your rings (I'm being kind :D), but most people don't loupe their rings regularly, and they enjoy wearing them instead of keeping them hidden away. I have to think that since you obviously appreciate the beauty of diamond jewelry, it's a shame that you of all people won't allow yourself to experience the joy of wearing what you own!

LOL!
This is a funny thread!
I'd take my chances with the sheets before my sweaters anyday. Never heard of metal fatigue due to sheets. Losing a stone can happen anytime...that's why you have them checked every 6-8 months.

I only take mine off at night because I started waking up with a ring print on my cheek (I sleep on my hands it seems).

Bed sheet damage is not possible unless you are sleeping in chain-mail sheets, or on a buffer. What about gloves & mittens then? LOL.

I'm with you, I clean my ring regularly with a jewelry cleaner and soft toothbrush, once or twice a week on average, it's something I take pleasure in, maintaining it's optimum sparkle.
On the other hand, my sil who I think never takes off her ring, the one that gets sunblock on it, she hardly ever cleans it. You're right, whether you wear it every so often or constantly, a ring is dirty if it's never cleaned period.
The reason I don't wear my ring to bed or even when I'm in the house, is that I just don't feel comfortable wearing jewelry or watches when I'm relaxed at home. I guess I like that naked feeling:roflmfao: no seriously I do wear clothes!
