Wearing engagement ring to sleep?

For years I wore my tiffany setting ring all the time. Never took it off. It had platinum prongs. do not wear it much now because rings bother me sometimes as my fingers swell at night. Never have I heard of it being harmful to wear rings to bed. Sure if they are big and have rough prongs I could see it. Remember most of the times people lose their rings is when they take them off. I never took mine off ever when I was wearing it and that is why I still have it.

Generally I always wear my set. I am currently 16wks pregnant and have gained almost 10lbs, my ring size is 4 1/4 my set is now extremely tight. My mother advised that I shld take it off while I still can because as my pregnancy progresses I might not be able to...

I remove all jewelry the moment I get home, just a habit I guess..

I agree with your mum! I got slight water rentention and while I could wear my rings, they felt really tight and left a mark. I've heard horror stories of them having to cut off the ring! In fact my mum has a ring that was too tight and had to be cut off :p

really??? sliding over sheets will damage platinum and diamonds??? I sleep with mine on lol...more worries in the kitchen then the bedroom!! :P

It won't damage the diamonds, unless you whack your rings on something hard or whatever, but it wears down the platinum, and if you have a rough prong, can snag and then you would lose a diamond.

Last night I thought I'd lie down in bed with my ring on and arms under the bed to see how much friction there is.. I was freezing because my husband sweats buckets during his sleep so we have to turn the AC up. My ring was so loose it never stayed upright. The diamond was off to the side resting on either my pinky or middle finger. I ended taking it off.

I always take my rings off when I get home at the end of the day, assuming I ever put them on. But they always go in their specific ring boxes. Always. I never put them in a dish, on my phone, only in their individual boxes. They don't usually go back on, if at all, til I get to work in the morning because I need that much time for my fingers to go down.

While I suppose prongs rubbing sheets or snagging is a possibility, I've worn my YG engagement set through everything for 15 years, including to bed every night. At the time I received them, I just didn't know any better, otherwise I probably would have been more careful. But there is no apparent wear to the prongs, and never once in 15 years have my prings snagged a sheet, either at home or in a hotel.

Like someone else mentioned, the likelihood of losing a ring increases exponentially when one removes them often, and weighing the risk of prong wear against soft cotton sheets to removing the rings just doesn't compare for me. If a person has a great routine and always removes their rings to the same (safe) place, then that's better, but most people don't. They tend to remove them and set them in a kitchen cabinet to cut up veggies, or they leave them on a vanity to wash their hands or they set them on a night table at bedtime. IMO, while jewelry should not be abused, it isn't so delicate as to not withstand regular hand-washing or gentle movement over sheets, either.

Diamonds and metal getting worn down/damaged from bed sheets?:lolots::woot: People have way too much time on their hands if they are worrying about whether or not their sheets are wearing down their wedding rings. By the way, rings (or any jewelry for that matter) can be easily polished and professionally cleaned by a jeweler at any time. I guess that I just don't get the concept of trying to protect something to death. Clearly, a wedding ring is meant to be worn, which means that it will most certainly get damaged from time to time. It's called normal wear and tear....

I agree. I just don't understand having rings you are afraid to wear. If that's the case, wear a plain gold band and don't even get any diamonds. As I said before, I've lived for 61 years, and not once have I ever heard of gold or platinum being worn down by rubbing on sheets. If it happens, it must be microscopic.

I don't sleep in mine- I find it uncomfortable as my fingers do tend to swell when I sleep and I would sometime wake up with a diamond imprint on my cheek. I also do not shower with my rings on- I don't want them to get soap scum and they tend to slide around and I don't want them to go down the drain.

Laugh all you want, it happens.

If you think about it, the metal and diamonds of a ring is inherently stronger than that of the cotton, silk or whatever bedding. If you took a ring and rubbed it repeatedly on sheets for days on end, the sheets will be the thing to give out, not the ring.

Metal is stronger than cotton and I'd love to see an example of 'sheet damage'.
