I love this thread! Everyone's bags are amazing. I don't have pictures of all of mine, but I really should photograph the rest.

This is an original Bonnie Cashin skinny tote. I am lucky to have two of these - This one is camel, and the other is black, and they are both in great condition.

Your skinny tote is stunning and looks brand new! It is just beautiful! I am loving all of the great photos on this thread. :-)

Here is a catalog page from 1979. It shows the Watermelon tote as a 9441. It's hard to read though. I cannot make out the dimensions.

I don't know if this was already discussed, but style 9441 was renamed in a later catalog as a Watermelon Satchel, and has a zippered top, I think the top on the 9440 Tote is open? Someone was asking about the Watermelon Tote over at Ebay's Fashion Discussion Boards, and poster "fashionclubgurl" posted catalog pictures of both the 9440 and 9441. It sounds like the pictures are from the 1981 and 1982 catalogs. According to the pictures and the post, both styles are the same size. The type of leather doesn't seem to make any difference.

I'll see if I can post the catalog pics.

ETA - got 'em, I think.

Interesting! You can see from these pictures that 9441 has a leather covered kisslock frame. Our bags are pre-creed and have brass kisslock frames, but they have zippered tops. So do you think they are 9441 and they just covered the kisslock frame on the later versions?

I have NO idea. I've never owned either and don't know why Coach would have changed the name and number - just a change to the covering of the kisslock frame doesn't seem like a very good reason to change the name and style number of the entire bag, especially back in the 70s and early 80s when Coach may have only introduced one or two new styles a year, if that. Maybe the Satchel 9441 actually replaced the Tote because of some changes to the style that aren't mentioned in the catalogs. You ladies are probably in the best position to figure out the differences - good luck!

That's one reason why I stick mostly to late vintage (late 80s-early 90s) and classic (pre-China) styles, the earlier vintage bags will drive you nuts trying to make sense of them. :graucho:

I have both styles and apart from the leather on the kiss lock I can see no other differences. I'm surprised that you are surprised by this lack of sensibility by Coach, Hyacinth!

Here are some different styles of bags that have double gusseted pockets on the front or are larger than a normal bag (Knapsack). Most are very hard to find though. The Carriers are out there but they are really big and can get heavy. The Knapsack does not have double gusseted pockets but it is nice and roomy. The color is called Caked Black Coffee (honest!). It is one of my greatest treasures.

In order they are: Original Musette, Organizer Pouch, Carrier, Knapsack.

Dang it! More for the list! What's the style # for the organizer pouch? :D

ETA: never mind, I saw it on the catalog page.

thank you! I hate unsolved mysteries but I love my early vintage bags! I also really love 90s and early 2000s classic leather.

OMG, you're right! I should know better, shouldn't I? :D

(Seriously, since that was when the Cahns still owned the company, I'd expect a bit more common sense from them!) ;)

That is so upsetting! I've bought several bags with shortened straps and I usually didn't notice until I unbuckled the strap to condition it. I wouldn't want to punch extra holes. I would look into getting a coordinating strap that can be clipped onto the rings; probably a short strap or chain to use as a handle would look best. Or you could get creative and buckle on something that would extend the original strap length. It would be a lot easier if it was a basic color like black, but maybe you could paint something to match or use a pale color that would blend.
I know, I was so looking forward to wearing her. In retrospect, I wish I had returned it, but I thought maybe I could rejig the strap but then realized more holes wasn't the way to go. Too bad, because it is in pristine condition. Do you know what the color is called? It's kind of a mint green color.
