I always clean and condition my bags but rarely do I dunk them. I have over 200 and I've dunked only two or three. I use leather products for leather, suede products for suede and fabric cleaner for fabrics. I did dunk a really gross strap to my Musette though. It took three times to get it cleaned up. I've attached a before and after shot of it. :-)

That bag is a real beauty!

I have around 40 vintage Coach bags. A few I bought new (I am a vintage person, myself) but most I bought at thrift stores. I think I've bathed at least half of them. Some of the bags were practically new and in good shape. I didn't bother bathing them. Most, however, were dirty and/or squished and misshapened. One bag had what looked like dried vomit in the bottom. Bathing helps with shaping the bag, including uncurling straps. When the straps can be detached from the bag, I curl them in the opposite direction as they dry. Another factor, is that I live in a desert. Our humidity is usually under 10 percent. So virtually all of the bags are dry, as is everything else here, including my own self. Bathing seems to help rehydrate the leather. I start applying conditioner while the bag is still damp. I usually apply two or three coats of Lexol, and finish with Blackrocks.

Ooh, I had a fob that was missing the hangtag. I ended up buying a fob just for the hangtag! Later on I used the ring for another fob.

I have a plastic bag full of hangtags I've removed during rehabs. Most of them I can't figure out which bag they belong on!

They are so tiny, I can't believe it caught my eye-and I think I had a fob on my bag that day and was just sure I had lost it somehow on my way to work-but nope.

You are so much more detail oriented than I am, I'm not sure I'd go that far for a hangtag on a fob!

Oh, yes, I do that! Put things in a 'safe spot' then can't remember where that is. ;)

I'm sure it's in a jewelry box or something...I had it in my wallet for ages and would forget to take it out when I was home, I'd only see it when I was out.

I like to get the fobs looking as close to what they are supposed to be. I might have to sell them someday and that would affect the price. When I bought my koi, it was missing both the ring and the hangtag. I bought a keychain recently and they had switched out the ring with a smaller, non Coach, ring, which really bothered me! I won an auction for another keychain and the seller contacted me telling me the hangtag was missing. I told her to cancel the sale (mostly because I wasn't getting a bargain, so it should have been perfect) but she ended up offering to take a hangtag off another fob for me.

Oh, sigh... this is the bag I am longing for. I saw 1 a year or so ago, but I was trying to be a good girl and missed out on it. The price on this bag is not in my range. I guess a girl can dream. I should be happy with what I have which is so much more than I need. I have started selling some of my collection. When the closet is full and the over flow of NOS is in plastic containers I guess it's time to face reality.
You might want to think about a Field bag. They sometimes sell for less and they are not quite as big. There is a guy on Etsy so who has some very nice bags at very reasonable prices. The shop is called ProVintageGear. I don't know what he has in stock right now though. I just bought a bag from him and I love it. Here are some photos from the listing. It already looks much better after a bit of TLC. This is a Brief Bag so it does not have a shoulder strap. I love bags with the double gusseted pockets on the front and I have several different styles.

Here are some different styles of bags that have double gusseted pockets on the front or are larger than a normal bag (Knapsack). Most are very hard to find though. The Carriers are out there but they are really big and can get heavy. The Knapsack does not have double gusseted pockets but it is nice and roomy. The color is called Caked Black Coffee (honest!). It is one of my greatest treasures.

In order they are: Original Musette, Organizer Pouch, Carrier, Knapsack.

Inspector Kitty is inspecting the '96 Essex briefcase #5274 I found at GW today (for $13.50). He particularly liked the booklet (my first!).

The pebbling is so interesting! I wonder if that was intentional? I don't remember ever seeing a NYC bag with so much pebbling.

I don't think I've ever seen the first and last. Do you have style numbers and measurements? Do you have an ad for the Knapsack? Where did you learn the color name?

I love the pebbling! The more the bags are used, the smoother they become. I have a Federal Seal bag with the same leather. I have a red Federal Seal as well but there is very little pebbling left on that one but enough for me to know that it looked like this one when it was new. It's wonderful, soft, yummy leather. :-)

That is so interesting! I have a NYC Madison satchel that is pebbled like that and it looks brand new. I thought the pebbling was a fluke.

I got the name of the white bag and the color of the Knapsack from Debi Nemetz. The white bag is also called a Suspender Musette. Per Debi, it is the original Musette. I have a catalog photo for the Organizer Pouch. I got the Knapsack from Cinzia Maria. I cannot find a catalog photo for that one. I have a Knapsack in black as well. Here are the dimensions of the Knapsack and the authentication. The Knapsack is a fairly large bag. It is a toss up between the Organizer Pouch and the Knapsack. I love both of them. I love the original Musette too but it's white so I don't use it very often.

BTW I own every bag on that catalog page. :-D

Does anyone have an opinion on alterations of a bag? I just bought a red Madison Chapin that looks to be in lovely condition except its strap was shortened to a 16" drop on the last hole (my beechnut Chapin had a strap drop of 23" on the last hole, in comparison). I decided I can live with it because of the rare color, otherwise good condition, and low price. I'm not asking for an opinion on monetary value, because I'm not going to resell it, I'm just curious if anyone has strong feelings on this.
I bought a gorgeous pale green Regis that had the strap shortened. You couldn't tell from the pictures. The seller gave me a partial refund because she hadn't noticed. I decided to keep it but I have never worn it. The strap is the perfect length to use as a shoulder tote but the bag is really too small to wear that way and the only way you could get away with it as a handbag it to add extra holes in the strap. I am torn as to what to do with it.

Thank you! I remember when you got your organizer pouch. I had posted that catalog photo on the forum just a few days earlier. Then we had seen 2 of them so we knew a third one was coming! That's when you found yours! I had bought too much around then so I resisted, but I don't think I've seen one since. Did you ever post a comparison to the classic pouch?

That color name is so interesting. I had just assumed the color names were generic at the beginning like they were once we started seeing catalogs. I always assumed that color looked like that because it was black that had faded over time.

Did the suspender Musette cost a fortune? I don't think I've ever seen one. A suspender bag was sold recently for around $350. A pony express bag went for over $500.
