I rehabbed one of those. It was amazing at how well the red recovered! I can't remember how nice the leather was but I think the bag is kind of small. In my rehab pile, I have a 9186. The leather seems really nice, but mine has ink on it so I haven't done anything with it yet. I think they made a larger version which might be perfect for your friend. Maybe something like this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/COACH-RED-L...689?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item234f3de8b1

The bag I was referring to when I said the leather was fantastic was the Legacy drawstring #9165. It has the most amazing leather!

If you're really lucky, you might be able to find a 2012 Legacy duffle in black cherry. Those are very nice bags. The leather isn't as wonderful as vintage but it's still nice.
Thanks for the suggestions. She definitely wants a vintage bag. I'll just have wait for a cheaper shoulder sac or maybe a red Sonoma full grain. She said she'd consider a flap bag too.

I want this! (but don't let me stop you; I don't have an extra $225)

Isn't this interesting?

DH and I watch a movie from the 30s or 40s every night, and every night I check to see if Bonnie Cashin made the costumes, but so far we haven't seen one of hers.

You won't be getting this one either, Whateve, but you won't mind because you already have one. This one will need just a bit of work though. :-)

Ooh, congratulations! I don't mind at all; I'm so happy I already have it! I think this is only the second one I've ever seen! Did you get a good deal?

I was just remarking in the Hall of Shame that the seller I bought mine from has been selling fakes!

Hi Whateve! I paid $125.00 for mine which I think is very reasonable. Now I have a question and I am hoping maybe you know the answer. The Watermelon totes listed on eBay use 9441 as the style number BUT look at this catalog from 1976. It lists the Watermelon tote as 9440. I wonder what the difference is? I also wonder if the suede Watermelon totes have a different style number?

I am very sorry to hear that the seller you got yours from has been selling fakes. Sometimes people don't realize that they have a fake but an experienced seller should know better or at least be careful of what they're selling. So far, I am not seeing NYC bags faked and I hope it stays that way.

I think I may know the answer to my question. Here are photos of my Watermelon totes. Both are made in NYC but one kisslock frame is metal and the other one is covered in leather. That could be the difference in style number. If I am correct, the suede tote is a 9440 and the leather one with the leather covered kisslock frame is a 9441.

I think that is a very reasonable price. I have no idea about the style number! I have a catalog picture that looks exactly like that one but has the style number 9441. I bet they made some slight changes and changed the style number from 9440 to 9441.

I've never found the suede versions of vintage styles in catalogs. I think they may have been done in very small quantities, since we don't see many at all, so they probably didn't have separate style numbers.

I'm not really worried about my seller having sold fakes because I knew my bag was authentic the minute I saw it, even if I had never seen one before. Like you said, the really old things haven't seemed to be faked. It just would have been nicer to do business with someone who took the time to authenticate.

Aha, great detective work! I bet you're right!

ETA: my other watermelon bag has a glued-in serial number and leather covered frame. I wonder if the same can be said about the Bonnie Cashins we've seen - I wonder if the older versions have metal frames and the later ones have leather covering.

My tan watermelon with the leather covered frame has a glued in serial number. The new one with the metal frame is pre-creed with just a cartouche. Sooo I think the theory holds. :-) The new bag is actually within driving distance from me so it should get here quickly. The seller is also a collector and she knows it is a very rare bag. Still haven't seen another slim tote like the one I have though. That was a real bear to rehab. :-)

Glad to hear that you aren't worried about your bag, Whateve. It is a bummer to know that someone you did business with is not overly honest though.

My watermelon tote has a glued in serial number and leather covered frame too. I bought it at Savers for about $25 a year ago or so. It was in good condition but I still bathed and conditioned it.
