And on another note....recvd my lovely slim satchel, kindly authenticated by Whateve.

Did these very early bags ( this one has only the word "coach" inside, about the size of the (earlier?) black metal tags) have solid brass hardware?? It does have a hang tag.

The hardware on my bag needs polishing--right now its dark looking. And not as substantial as that on the later, more common, New York City creed bags.

Thanks for any information.

I think they started used solid brass sometime in the mid 70s and continued through the 80s, but not for all bags.

My Bonnie Cashins with the striped lining from the 60s/early 70s didn't have solid brass hardware. My skinny tote that has a NYC creed with glued in number doesn't have solid brass hardware - I know because I removed the brass coating by mistake. My pre-creed watermelon tote has the Coach lozenge embossed in the leather so it's the same era as yours. I can't tell if it or my slim satchels, which all have NYC creeds, have solid brass hardware. The ads mentioned a solid brass zipper but didn't mention the rings. The kisslock on my watermelon looks too shiny to be solid brass; I'm not sure about the rings, but they look similar in shape to the rings on my skinny tote and those weren't solid brass.

Thank you Whateve. Interesting that they began using better hardware. Hadn't known that. But the leather is superb!!

You're welcome. In my opinion, the leather continued to get better as time went on. I had two courier bags, one was pre-creed and had solid brass hardware. The other had a NYC creed and plated hardware. I think they soon realized that the large buckles were too heavy in solid brass. The leather on the NYC one was thicker and softer. The best leather I've ever felt is on some classic bags from 2001.

FYI, I called Coach this morning to try to get a tag for my little card case and found out they don't make leather ones anymore. Only metal. Womp womp. I have one coming anyway, brass to match the zipper. Still free though!

What does one say when calling Coach to inquire about hangtags? Do you tell them it's for a vintage bag? If so, are they still willing to help? For some reason I can't believe that they would be....

I don't think it matters much what kind of bag it is - you still will only get a metal tag. But they were perfectly lovely - the lady I talked to, anyway.

I bought this yesterday. It needs a hang tag, I'm guessing a small one? Does anyone have any idea what size it should be? I have an older long black cosmetic case, so I'm guessing that size? Thanks.
I don't think it came with a hangtag originally. It is supposed to have a keyring, like this.
