The ridiculous feeling of wanting a bag you know will not work out for you.

My new to me chanel classic jumbo bag is my first large crossbody bag. I only bring my phone and card holder on a daily basis. But its chanel and its the only size i could afford as I got it from the 2nd hand market as gift from my husband. So i got it even though it does not fit myblife style. Im a nurse i use scrubs. I seldom attend any formal events. So few time i used it in groceries. And outbof town trips but the content would always be phone and wallet lol. Id put in a sanitizer haha

Oh imand ifbits something im drooling over and could never afford and does not fit my lifestyle at all then it would be the kelly. I never go to fancy places and i dont wear fancy clothes so it will never work for me. I wouldnt know where to use it for. But i sure want one if i could afford it. Maybe use it for errands lok

Oh my gosh finally a thread that gives words to precisely what I am feeling. I love smaller bags - clutches, pochettes, etc. - they look so elegant held in the hand, but the real me simply carries too much stuff to fit bags that are that small, and badly needs the convenience of a shoulder-carry bag. I own several small bags - the cloud bag from cambridge satchel, loewe flamenco clutch, to name two - and am always trying to find opportunities to carry them, they always make me feel so nice, but over the course of the years I've had to sell away quite a few bags (Moynat Rejane - so beautiful but so impractical) because there simply aren't enough chances I'd get to carry all of them out often enough to make me feel it's worth keeping them around. Recently I've been back to the small bag game again. I got a savette symmetry from net-a-porter with a singles day discount code, still in two minds about whether to keep it...
Hi @swallowtails ! I’m curious if you decided to keep the Savette symmetry? I’ve been trying to find info on this brand, but there isn’t much available! How would you compare the craftsmanship and leather quality of Savette to other luxury brands?

It’s the Celine box bag for me too! I used to own it in black and tan, but sold both as it was looking weird even if I really tried to make it work for me. I’m quite tall and the strap is not adjustable, it looked like I was wearing a bum bag/was squeezed I still think it’s an amazing bag, just not for me unfortunately!

Pic attached so you get the idea
I'm downsizing my essentials so it works for me. I don't need a full sized hand cream or whatever else I bring. There are only a few things that are actual essentials. I was so focused on practical, medium sized bags in the beginning, but now I want small shoulder bags even if they're less practical. Right now, I'm focused on the Celine ava in tan canvas and the Celine Triomphe Shoulder bag.

I thought about getting the Dior Saddle bag and the YSL Le 5 a 7 bag. The Dior Saddle bag looks flashy and cool, but I think it's too fussy and flashy for me. I like a more understated vibe. For the YSL shoulder bag, I wanted it because I admire Yves Saint Laurent and wanted a YSL bag, but the bag itself has issues I don't like. I might change my mind about these bags later, but I've tried on YSL bags so many times and I think they just don't work for me. The bulkiness of YSL bags is what made me think I can't wear boxy, bulky bags, but I love my Celine boxy bags.

I am trying to stop looking at the YSL Icare Shopper bag, because I am sure it is too gigantic for someone my height. My mom thinks my Spy Bags are too big. I ignore that.
I have this bag and am only 5 ft tall around 100 lbs. I thought ridiculously large at first but couldn't stop obsessing about it. After i purchased, i didn't even remove from bag for the longest time but once i finally started using, I love this bag and use all the time. Definitely one of my go to bags and always receive compliments on it.

I would also love to know how you like the savette symmetry! Thanks!

Oh, and I def get what y'all are saying. My kryptonite is vintage frame bags with metal handles that are arm carry. I do go out from time to time, but I don't need 4 frame bags for the 1 time I go out every month (now that I have a toddler). I've been trying to buy relatively inexpensive ones from Etsy or eBay but I'm addicted to just scrolling through all the beautiful vintage bags. It transports me to some vintage classy fantasyland I suppose...

This is a fun thread. For me, it seems to be most of the handbags in my closet that i obseesed over and had to have then practically never use.

I tracked down a prada fairy bag in great condition after many sleepless nights researching and still haven't used it once. Same with many others and i realize i might actually enjoy obsessing/purchasing more than actually using if that makes sense. Or maybe it's more that i enjoy the sense of accomplshment after coveting something then once i have it's like ok now what.

Generally speaking, i would say clutches for sure. I think they always look pretty but seem so impractical. I mean who wants to hold their bag all night or be stuck trying to shove it under your armpit to free up your hands? ‍And then to have to set it down on table or on bar bc no way to hang it can be anxiety inducing for fear it will get dirty or something will spill on it.

Also, i would have to say hobos as for some reason the zipper on this shape bag always seems to be difficult and annoying to zip/unzip. And the slouchy shape just slumps over when you set it down. I have several and same challenge with nearly all. Still i am always attracted to hobo style and hasnt prevented me from buying but it should!

The exception to the slouchiness is the more structured fendigraphy which i also obsessed over but comes with its own set of problems as i am fearful to set down and risk damaging the hardware on the bottom. And don't get me started on the nano fendigraphy.... adorable but if can't fit a phone forget it for me. Even though phone usually in my hand this was a deal breaker for me. Same with the jimmy choo micro bon bon which i think is so cute and i love the handle on the micro but had to get the small even though didn't like handle as much and even that is pretty small and fits phone but does so awkwardly in my opinion.

This Coach Soft Tabby keeps calling my name but I’m trying to resist!

View attachment 5661635

I figured I’d try listing all the reasons why it won’t work for me to see if that helps to ease the temptation:

  • The leather is smooth and I prefer pebbled leather that isn’t easily marked.
  • There is no more room for bags that need to be babied in my collection. If I can’t throw it in the stroller basket or wear it on the playground then I don’t need it, because I spend way more time doing toddler friendly activities than anything these days.
  • I know that I wouldn’t often reach for this color bag compared to others in my collection that work better with my wardrobe.
  • I prefer bags that keep their shape and would need an insert for this one.
  • I’d have to get it at Macy’s and not my local Coach store, which I love to shop at. Even though we all know that this color is just for department stores, I’d still feel like I’m cheating.
Maybe that last one is a little bit of a reach.
Which color were you referring to? For some reason the photo isn't loading on my end. Did you ever end up getting the bag? I love how you made a list of reasons not to get. Likely i would have done that and purchased anyway lol

I bought the ombre versions (one pink/orange and one light blue/green) of the small pillow tabby from saks for my daughters (age 16 and 23) as holiday gift and i don't think either ever uses but they were so cute/pretty!

It’s the Dove Grey and I did end up getting it on sale for 40% off. I actually carried it today, coincidentally.

Obsessing about Bottega Veneta Cabat but large one because of the style and size which work so well, so I bought a similar Bottega bag to Cabat, beautiful, gorgeous, amazing …. got it and realized that all the random pains I had before disappeared once I downsized my everyday essentials in my bags during Covid days, soooo why then this humongous pit ? Returned it and literally cried packing it back

I'd like to share my frustration as a result of exposure and being influenced.

I am fully aware this is happening but I still find myself going back and forth looking at styles I know full well I will not use for various reasons.
I know it's a marketing ploy but I still feel stupid that I'm falling for it.

One of the styles I dislike are bags with no hand carry option, due to either lack of handle or the shortest strap option still being too long.
Shoulder bags slip off and when I wear one crossbody, my shoulder hurts. It must by psychological because I have no problem when wearing a bumbag across my chest.
I still go and look at chain strap shoulder/crossbody bags. Last week I was really invested in a preloved one for a couple of days, being fully aware that I will regret the purchase. I didn't buy it in the end as I saw some damage which finally made me stop watching it.

Another style are smaller capacity bags in general.
Whenever I see that the Multi Pochette Accessories is available to buy online, I feel to urge to just add it to basket and check out.
I like bags that are one big compartment. I hate it when I'm looking at a piece and see that stupid divider in the middle!
The MPA is exactly that with extra steps. I think I just like the idea of playing with the piece, rearranging the pouches and attaching different straps. That's a very expensive toy! I already have a set of three leather zip pouches, and you guessed it, I don't use them very often!

I know I'm not the only one struggling with this ridiculous phenomenon.
What are the styles and pieces you know you would regret buying?
Unfortunately, In my case, I have to buy the bag in Q to prove to myself it wasn't what I thought.... I will say, that I have never re-purchased a bag (I've returned or sold) because of doubt....not counting exchanging for size. I tell myself once it goes back for return, I can't buy it again !!

Ugh-a Birkin 25 in Rose Poupre and palladium hardware. I don’t even like Birkins, but that particular one gets me EVERY SINGLE TIME.

The other is the Dior Saddle bag in the blue oblique or etoile de jouy. Beautiful and cool bag to look at but completely impractical.

YAY on the soft Tabby. I adore mine, and it’s one of my favorite bags. It’s in smooth leather and suede, and I don’t baby it at all. I have a suede brush that I use on it at the end of the day to keep it clean.
