I am coming in on the end of this but I see it in pretty simple terms. There was a conflict of interest here, because a member of the forum has a vested financial interest in the product being promoted. Whether it is a good product is really not the issue.
Running a forum this size with so many different personalities is very time consuming and is loaded with drama. Sometimes the forum owners have to make decisions that may be unpopular to some but are for the good of the "community" as a whole.
