Rediscovering Marc Jacobs vintage

I've been watching so many of these east-west bags sell and thinking, "that's so on trend" and now... you got me looking
I’m really liking them. They’re everywhere right now in so many iterations. Big fan of the Daria from around 2005 - I got a dark brown version earlier this year. Lots of options still out there at pretty decent pricing (ignore the $400 ones!!) if you/anyone is interested:

I think 15 years is a good starting point for MJ "vintage" because he had such a massive shift from the luxury to the contemporary market. The vintage bag I got yesterday is a 2001 model... šŸ‘µ
IMO, I think the MJ/Robert Duffy collab years are the best.
They met in 1984, and ā€œbroke upā€ in 2014.

In 1998, MJ started as creative direct of Louis Vuitton, and was at that position thru 2013. Directly after MJ left, LVMH, the parent company and majority owner of Marc Jacobs International decided on taking MJ in a new direction.

Honestly, as a rabid fan of MJ, from the early 2000’s I started to see a drop in leather quality and construction in those later MJ/Duffy years, very thin straps, less stitching detail. Was kinda weird, but saved me money!!

I would love to know and understand the Italian sourcing for the (now) vintage bags. The quality is truly outstanding and very noticeable when you compare bags of earlier years to the last of the lines.

I was buying (and selling) MJ bags between 2005-2011 or so. I feel like after the Stam took off (and all the iterations of those quilted leather, heavy hardware bags) the next phase was thinner leather and a switch to the silkier taupe-beige linings. The leather definitely changed about then but they were still "made in Italy" with the season date code tags. And then BOOM - it all shifted to contemporary.

I had the little ukita in black. It had beautiful pebbled leather and the lining was fabric before they changed it to some plasticky-type material.

I do regret selling it and would definitely wear it now.

There was a lot of restructuring at the company at the time, Marc's longtime business partner, Robert Duffy, left the company and they made some weird business choices around this time. Merging Marc by Marc Jacobs with the mainline killed a lot of their revenue and I think they had to scale back and start producing less expensive bags and accessories. I think the clothes are still expensive but possibly not as expensive as the main line clothes were pre-2015.

After really a loooong wait, this bag is here and I love it šŸ˜. The leather has a great texture, leather is thin, chain massive and overall, the bag is not light. But it’s sort of wild and I love it. And the green shoulder strap- cool!! And most importantly: it’s fits to my hoodie šŸ˜†

Curious if anyone knows names for these bag styles or what era these bags were from. They all have the mini studs on the handles, the large front buckle and then the fluted tassels, so assuming they were from similar collections around the same time. I really enjoy the wackiness of the black version with the fringe.

Those bags were from the Duffy collection of S/S 2009

here’s another bag from that collection
There were lots more pics of these bags but sadly they’ve all been lost
This collection actually wasn’t wildly popular at the time. A lot of these bags made it to the sale racks and outlet stores

It's incredible, even the leather linings are buttery soft!

My fall 2006 Sweet Punk tote arrived!! It's much heavier than I expected it to be, the canvas is weighty and the hardware is quite heavy. It also has the nameplate on the side of the bag much like my fall 2007 Monika bag!
Nice! That old MJ hardware really can be heavy, huh? I’m finding that with some mid-2K’s Coach bags I’ve recently picked up. Solid weighty hardware. I like that the studs have some wear on them. The canvas too. It feels right for this bag
