I have a dear friend who is starting her Hermes journey :) and she is getting married next year. She was looking to buy a 12 setting dinner set. Should she buy it when she is in Paris since it will be a better deal. Will that help her get a leather appointment or does she have to do lottery. Or is it beneficial for her to buy it where she is from in the US in the hopes of getting a quota bag. Her husband is DC based and she is NYC based. Any thoughts?

She would have to check the boxes on the way home or ship them to herself. I don't believe they will direct ship to her.

Hard truth: There maybe no stock and she might take years to gather the full set of her choice.

Paris will be a better deal but also a bit of a hassle to carry back home. And if it goes well with the SA, there's no guarantee to get an appointment after the purchase, SA might help her or tell to try again the lottery. It's really 50/50.

IMO, it would be better to do this through her local store where she will have a better chance to form a relationship and a profile with an SA she can see on a regular basis. It may also take a long time to get the dishes. I’ve been waiting over a year for my crystal (my SA assured me that I have paid for it lol) and I gave up on dishes and purchased another brand (Hering Berlin and hand painted Marie Daag, a French artisanal dish maker). If she decides to get them in Paris and they happen to be in stock, they will most likely be able to ship them. Good luck

My recommendation would be for her to make the purchase from her local store. The issue with buying in Paris is that there is no guarantee that she will be able to obtain the specific bag she desires even if she manages to secure a leather appointment. I always suggest establishing a rapport with your local store to maximize your bag buying experience since your customer profile will always be accessible to you.

I can honestly tell you from experience that it's simply not possible to walk in any H store (Paris or not) and buy a complete set of H porcelain during the visit. It's not that they don't want to sell, they simply don't have the stock. A set for 12 is even more impossible. The only way to get this set is to place an order and it takes 6-12 months or even longer for the order to be fulfilled. Your friend can place this order at any store, be it her local one in the US or in a Paris store, but ordering from Paris does not mean she'll get it as 'a better deal' price-wise, when you factor in import charges + VAT + shipping. They do ship worldwide. Of course your friend can also fly to Paris to collect the items when they're ready, but it will be a massive hassle and she will still need to declare the purchases at customs.

There is no guarantee that the Maison SAs can help your friend get a leather appt if she splurges on the porcelain set, and, even if they can, there's no guarantee she'll get offered any QB. I echo what others have said that your friend is truly better off building a relationship at her local US store.

Hello, I just flew back from Paris. I was there for a week. For the last 2 years, I had an SA at Sevres but she is now off the floor. She would help me to get leather purchases approved. I am not a high spender but I have a long standing purchasing history. I didn’t connect with a new SA and I was not able to score an appointment at any of the stores. So the visit to the stores have been frustrating. I regularly fly through CDG, my SA there just offered me this Constance 24 in chèvre in the couleur Anémone.
I am really happy because I was looking for a colorful bag. I speak French fluently, so it helped to connect with my SA. My prespend isn’t that high. I have made 3 -4 visits during which I purchased scarves, ties, shoes and some SLGs.

Going on my first ever trip to Paris!! First stop is obviously Hermes! Understanding that there is a lottery system and even upon winning you still are not guaranteed a QB, I would like to remain in my fantasy land and am asking for any advice / tips when it comes to asking for a bag after scoring a leather appointment. I’m extremely nervous but sending out all the positive vibes I can! I would love a mini Kelly or B25. Has anyone had any luck getting a mini Kelly on their first leather appointment?

Good luck! Don’t worry about the bag until you’ve gotten an appt. Then, ask for your top choice first. If you only want a QB, do not settle for a non QB. Bc if they don’t have what you want, but you buy another bag, they might reject subsequent attempts for a walk in. In my experience, the first bags they bring are usually the best ones. It doesn’t matter what you wear; you don’t need to carry an H bag (my usual travel bag is a Loewe mini puzzle); and you do not need prespend. But, it helps to be very polite, and a bonjour Madame, how are you, shouldnt be skipped if possible :smile:

Have fun on the rest of your first ever trip and don’t let Hermes take up all your time and energy :smile:. The LV foundation has great exhibits, and the dior museum is very nice. If the Modigliani exhibit is still on, it’s worthwhile. If you want a retail experience that is about a sixth the price of Hermes, I recommend Courreges. While they do have a presence in the US, the paris selection is great, and it’s cheaper. And Pierre Herme (bakery) probably shouldn’t be missed either.

ETA: bring comfy walking shoes (I wear navy leather birkenstock sneakers, and if you wear jewelry, I cover with long sleeves just in case.

ETA: there is always a chance of rain

ETA: if your concierge recommends a nouvelle restaurant shabour (a super fashionable reservation with a very popular Israeli chef) do NOT go. There is a cute neo bistro called le Mermoz which i think might be a nicer alternative
