Scarves MYH's Scarf Showcase - and philosophical ramblings about how I built my collection

I am not able to photography my CDC scarves now, but I attached the pics from H.com here. I have the 06 (Gray-green) and the 14 (orange). I actually also really loved the fuschia one that you bought and sold, but decided that two (one neutral and one bright) were enough for me. I like that it is a different neutral than what i had in my scarf collection and imho this is the prettiest cw they released in this design. However, I have a love affair with the gray. The greenish tinge can make me look sickly so I fold it in a way that more of the brown and orange colors are shown (similar to your asymmetric cowboy). Sometimes, I think that I should sell it and pick up the 04 (anthracite/blue) or your cw but then I open it up and fall in love with it again. The orange one is a softer orange but bright nonetheless. I find it actually flattering on my complexion, and trust me very few orange scarves are. I chose it to give a pop of color to my neutral blue suits and cream and gray sweaters.

love your tutorials on the 140s btw. I used them often and appreciate other styling options for them.

oooow, I want to see modelling pics

BTW I forgot to remember I just bought the CDC design in an MT this season (the pale pink). It's one of the best designs for an MT (one of two MTs, which I haven't bought for a while)

Dhfwu - so interesting you raised this point about eating. I actually will pick different knots and scarf formats based on what I know I'll be doing. If I'm going out to a restaurant, I will choose a 90cm silk or 140cm giant silk and tie it in a way that it does not protrude out. Like the necklace knot. If I'm going for a stroll, anything goes. Cowboy knot is good for that. If it's windy outside, the turtleneck-like knot os the wind doesn't whip my scarf all around. Going to the movies, get my cashmere GM out and tie it whichever way feels cozy or I can use it as a blanket. I never take my scarves off while eating. I plan ahead and make sure my scarf lies pretty flat against my body. I would die if my scarf dropped on the dirty floor of a restaurant. I also don't want to have to retie it after dinner.

I follow the same strategy about dining out.

I never worry about getting something on my scarves because I'll wear them:

In a classic bias fold once around my neck and finished with a square knot - if the tails are in front I just shift them over to the side.

In a Cowboy knot, because I can tuck the bottom of the triangle and tails into my shirt.

Same thing for a men's style tie.

Something with long tails like a simple scarf ring or friendship knot, I'll either tuck it into my shirt or just turn it around completely with the tails hanging down my back.

And to eliminate the possibility of accidents entirely, the knot where you make one twist in front and then tie the tails behind your neck, or for that matter, anything else up close to my face.

Seven years counting and no emergency trips to the dry cleaners! :D

I do exactly the same. All of the above. Also, if I'm eating lunch at my desk and it's something particularly "dangerous", I've been known to slip scarf over head, lie it neatly on conference table or over a chair, and put it back on when I'm done.

I had some time today and thought, why not?, let's do one more. And the faster I finish, the sooner PbP will start her showcase thread! :yahoo:

Like many of you, 140cms are my absolute favorite. But honestly, I find the CSGMs too high maintenance. I love their snuggle factor as well as their ability to hold a knot easily (no slippage) but the runs...oh the runs...as we have witnessed Mrs. Owen demonstrate recently on her fixing a pulled thread thread (yes I meant to write thread
twice lol) happens way to often. I wear rings, I wear necklaces, and they all get caught on a CSGM. The angst of a pulled thread drives me to insanity sometimes when I'm traveling and don't have a needle around to fix it immediately. And let's not even talk about the pilling. I have even bought special brushes from the laundress to minimize the pilling but it always comes back. I know for certain that my shawls will not last forever and at Hermes prices, I would really like the items I buy to last forever. So for me, the second best alternative is a 140cm silk. The only downside is that they are more expensive (but cheaper than CSGMs!) and only 2 designs are issued every season. :shucks: So that does not leave me a lot of designs to choose from. I only have 4 in my collection but I think they are my most used scarves (aside from mousselines in the summer). They wear like the 90cm silks and I do feel like they will last practically forever. Interestingly, the weight of the 140cms changes all the time. I have felt some that were whisper thin, some that feel like 90cms in weight, and some in between. It seems like Hermes is changing the formula on this format all the time. They even once did a perforated one with astrologie nouvelle. Does anybody here still have one? I never got to feel or see one in person but I thought that was super interesting.

So with every new season, that's where my focus goes to first. But I am picky! Since the size of the scarf is big, I prefer the design to have a medium-large format. I adored the tapis persian design from last season but I felt the little flowers and designs were too busy for me. Then they did brides de gala, which I also couldn't do because of the wide border and the astronauts. So I'm crossing my fingers the SS2016 season brings something I will love. For all these reasons, this is only why I have 4 measly 140cm silks. Boohoo!

With the 140cms though, one does need to get a bit more creative in tying and knotting if you one wants their scarf to stay in place. A couple of well placed knots usually does the trick. Scarf rings are also quite useful with the 140cms. For instance, with the CSGM, if you want to do an infinity knot, you can just loop around your neck twice and you are set. With the 140cm silks, not so fast! If you just throw two loops around your head, one loop will inevitably be heavier than the other and that loop will start to sink lower and lower, while the small loop starts to choke you! So the best thing to do here is to do a knot in front of you and then tie in back of your neck (like in this pic) or loop twice and instead of just knotting the two scarf ends you are holding, incorporate the bit of scarf laying on your neck into the knot.

I have been on the fence about this scarf at times. Really, does anyone think brown, orange, navy, periwinkle, turquoise, and white is a good idea? It has been on the chopping block several times but each time I look at it, the design and colors just make me swoon. I love the Coup de Fouet design. It has horseys but in a modern geometric way. My hubs loves it too and many friends have said, no! it stays. So I have grown to love it except for the turquoise bits that don't look good near my face. This scarf requires lots of spatial calculations when I'm considering which knot to use but I guess it will make my mind sharper! Like a scarf puzzle. The other downside of this scarf is that it is almost strictly a fall/winter one. The colors in it do not lend well to spring/summer. And in a way, that's why I chose it. At the time I bought it, I already had both astrologie nouvelles and a fleurs d'indiennes scarf. The AN scarves could work in all seasons and the FdI only works in the spring/summer so I figured I could use a darker more wintery scarf in my 140cm collection. I tend to look at each format as it's own little capsule collection. I try to cover the spectrum within each size. So on a cold wintery day in Philly when we were having an epic snowstorm and power outage, I headed to KOP for some retail therapy and this scarf came home with me. I think of it as my power outage scarf lol.

Absolutely amazing knots where none of the white shows! You are so clever.

MYH - must say that though the 140 ssilks are fabulous, including your CdF (especially this colorway), the CSGMs are so beautiful to wear in the cold weather. I do agree they can be fragile, but for my most worn CSGM's I dont even look for pulls, runs or imperfections any more LOL. They are rather like old blankies, especially if one travels with them. The saturation of the colors in different designs are richer or softer than the twill counterparts. I waited almost too late when the La Femme shawl came out in the 140 CSGM due to concerns about snagging and delicate handling. All the chatter on quality and care on threads? All those concerns go right out the window after swathing oneself in the 140 GMs. I hope you will give one a try someday dear. I look back and do not regret leaping for the La Femme shawl and slipped down that slope many moons ago  Here you go - the thrill of the cocoon in a Grail.:graucho:

Oh lanit, I feel the same way about my CSGMs. They are so comfy, and you absolutely cannot be afraid of them. My house is chilly in the morning, so I throw one around myonly neck first thing. They drape and tie so easily and, as you said, the color saturation is amazing. I wish they were not so $$$.

Ok, here is my modeling attempt with my TP. I like it. :smile1: But does it look like I did it correctly?

It looks fantastic on u klynneann [emoji173]️[emoji173]️ I just love love this design!!!

Yes it looks correct! I think with all the small flowers, it's kind of hard for the eye to follow the weave pattern whereas on my CdF, there are "ropes" throughout so it's easier to follow. Thank you for showing us your beautiful TP!

Yes, I think you're right. I'll have to try it with my others too.

And....I have another 140 cm on the way!!! It was a birthday present from my DH, but they didn't have the cw I wanted in the store so it should be arriving on Tuesday... :graucho:

Lovely rich looking silk klynneann and beautifully worn.
I wondered if you wore it knotted lower over a low v neck to show some neck/chest [ not a lot!] if it may be even more lovely?
I think MYH advocates doing the knot at the back which should make it possible to do that….just my way of thinking with dark scarves.
