Scarves MYH's Scarf Showcase - and philosophical ramblings about how I built my collection

One of the best rewards (there are so many) is seeing everyone else's scarves, particularly the 140 silks. Klynneann - love all of yours even the pink CdF. I'm not a pink gal but can see how yours would look great on you.

So I'm all excited and have whipped myself up in a frenzy about what SS2016 will bring in this format so decided to go and investigate the SS2016 scarf thread again with a fine tooth comb. Plus I have insomnia tonight so need something to do on my iPad quietly in bed.

Here are the pics that shows the larger formats.

I see fantasies indiennes, l'instruction du Roy, new circles design, new birds and plants design, balade en berline, ex libris with circles in 140cms. Problem is, I can't tell if they are giant silks or cashmere silks.

Then I saw a convo with MarieT and Seton. I agree with MarieT that the LdR is prolly not a CSGM since they just did this one recently. So she concluded it was a silk twill. But then Seton rightly pointed out the hem looks too wide and looks to be a silk jersey. So does that mean we are going to have a 140cm silk jersey for the first time ever? Oh my goodness! My brain is going to have to work overtime to figure out the best knots for this new scarf creature. Or is it the white hem on the blue LdR is just a white printed border and not a hem? Which brings us back to a giant silk. MT also thought the ex libris with circles could be a giant silk. Either way, I think I am getting both designs as long as they are done in cws I love. Crossing my fingers!

Thank you, MYH. :blushing: It's funny, after posting them like that, it's so clear to see how different they are. The colors of my 140s are much more varied than my 90s!

It is so hard to tell what's what! I'm really loving that blue birds/plants one - can't wait to see what exact format that is and whether it will work on me.

Thank you, Pocketbook Pup! This one is cw 11. I also love 13 - isn't that the one you just got in Paris? I wish I could get two but there are so many others on my list!

Thank you, eternallove! There are 3-4 cws of Les Chemins Secrets that I would love to have lol!! I've decided on just the one, but oh, if I win the lottery.... ;)

Thank you, Pirula!

I'm so ready for Chemins in a gavroche.

We've not seen that yet, right?

BJS - if you are looking for medium warmth and love the feel of silk like me, this format is for you! Seriously. I think for a guy, there have been some designs recently you could work with. brides de gala (not sure if you like the wide border), perroquets (the navy blue cw is nice), cuirs desert (look into this one, I think there are some masculine cws). i don't think you are probably into les cles and folklore. I also think a few seasons ago psyche is a good one. All have been shown here on this thread in various cws. You can tie it so it's warm or you can tie it so it's not so much. I think it is the perfect format for you.

Here is a pic of my TP - I will take another pic tomorrow of my knot tying attempt. :)

MyH, thanks for your input! I will definitely have to add a 140 twill to my collection at some point [and most certainly NOT Les Cles! haha]. I still have several grails to hunt down first before committing so much money to one scarf though so it may be a little while. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Tapis 140 in the c/w that Klynneann showcased here but I have TP in gavroche and I have a rule about not repeating patterns since there so many gorgeous ones out there to collect. Chemins is lovely though and could be a possibility:D

Chemins would make a fabulous gavroche!

I don't think so!

Excellent. I'm ready.

Yes it would!!!

Thanks dear scarfies on the sweet comments about Session 1. Let's move onto Session 2 using the bias fold as our starting point. In my mind there are two categories of bias fold knots. Those that require a knot in the back of the neck, and those that don't. I use a knot in the back of my neck for the same reason I did it in Session 1 with my cowboy knot. It stops the heavier silk hanging in front of you from becoming too heavy and pulling down due to gravity. Tie the same square knot in your scarf leaving as much room as you would like around your neck. Try to tie this knot so it is neat and streamlined - make it as least bulky as possible. This way, it will be comfortable for you and will not be noticeable to others.

Ok from there, you can do so many knots and there are several ways to wear your scarf. Here are a few examples

Example 1: Tie the two tails together further down your body (leaving a triangle space) in front. Get your pretty smaller scarf rings out and use that instead of a knot. Using the trick of making a knot in back of your neck stops the scarf from tightening up around your throat and making you feel like you're being strangled. I hate that feeling.

Example 2: Bring the two tails forward and just wear it casually. If it's really windy, it might be wise to weave the tails under the scarf part looped around your neck so it stays put a little better.

Example 3: Do the weave knot! Klynneann - here's how I did this. Hope it's clear. Please let me know if you have any questions. I have found if I don't use a knot in back of my neck, the whole thing unravels in minutes unless the weave is right up against your neck. But I don't like the feeling of having scarves tight around my neck. The other way to achieve this look but with a different tying method is MaiTai's hacking knot. But with these giant silks, her hacking knot is not easy to execute. And it will unravel because one side is much heavier than the other. You need a CSGM for the hacking knot.

OK, last session and then let's see how you guys and gals have been wearing your 140 giant silks. Session 3 - the bias fold without a knot in the back of your neck. Some knots don't need a "safety knot" tied in the back since the whole creation is well balanced.

Example 1: I think everyone knows this one. Bias fold your scarf and make a loop around your neck with the tails hanging down in front of you. Just tie a knot right under the loop and you are ready to go.

Example 2: Bias fold your scarf and drape around your neck letting the two tails hang down in front of you. Tie a neat square knot about chest high and then take the two resulting tails going opposite directions around the back of your neck and tie a small knot. This gives you a chunky necklace knot. Tuck the small knot underneath. This is my personal favorite. I do this all the time. One preference of mine for this knot is to make a neat bias fold and try to keep it from unfolding when tying. I don't like too many folds with this knot. Ya know, my sharpei issue rearing it's ugly head again. Sorry, no offense to sharpeis or their owners ok? Here's two pics. One from today and one from yesterday.

Example 3: If you're cold and want more fabric around your neck. Fold in loose bias fold. This time, messy is good. Drape around your neck and intertwine the two tails making a "twist" in front of you. Then bring the tails in back of your neck and make another twist. Take the resulting tails and make a small knot in front of you. Rotate the scarf 180 degrees and you have a loose turtleneck/cowl look that is very toasty! These twists help the scarf maintain it's shape and stop the heavier loops from pulling down resulting in strangulation yet again.

Example 4: Get your mors ring out! Step 1 - Blow off the dust. hahaha. For those without one, I apologize in advance if this knot makes you go out and buy a mors ring. Bias fold the scarf and pull it through the bigger mors loop about halfway. Hang the scarf around your neck now. Take one tail and pull it through both the smaller mors rings. Take the other tail and pull it through the same smaller mors ring too but then feed it back through the outer ring. Feeding one tail through one of the smaller mors rings will help the whole thing stay in place. I like the mors ring to be on a diagonal as I have shown.

OK folks! That's all I have for now. That's 10 ways (including the 3 from yesterday) you can wear your giant silk scarf. Please don't neglect them in your drawer. It's time to bring them out to play! And while you're at it, snap some pics and show all of us please!

AND if you have other clever ways you wear your giant silk, do not be shy! Show n' Tell please! We want to see how you wear yours.

One last comment: For those with maxi-twillies also suffering from neglect, Bias fold knots from Session 2 and 3 also lend well to the MT format too!

Omg! You are a genius! I have to try these. And I need more 140s.

This is such an awesome thread, can't stop reading it! Thank you so much MYH! I love all the tutorial!
You're welcome! Thanks for the lovely feedback.

Is there such a thing as a Scarf Tying Ph.D.? Haha. I'd like to see someone's reaction if I put that on my resume. :lolots: Just kidding. I think this is the result of an idle mind? uh oh. And hey missy, you are on a ban until Spring remember? But if you want to break it, I won't breathe a word. Thanks for the silky love. :hugs:

Yes I'm on ban island until spring. Except for grails. And I found one second tier Grail this week. And twillies. Twillies don't count remember? But no 140s for now.

Aw c'mon. You can't leave us hanging like that! What 2nd tier Grail did you find darling? BTW - this is the first time I have hear a grail referred to in tiers. Under your personal classification system, do you have 3 tiers or just 2?

I was just teasing about your ban. It's winter. You need the 140s for winter survival.
