Here are my two big silks. The Cuirs DH got me to go with a new camel coat...it also has the raisin color of my Christmas present :)) I realize that I wear the CSGMs often for warmth, around my shoulders...after you advised me to analyze how I want to wear these silks, i think more like I wear the 90s...bias folds, casual cowboy knots,etc...as I am short too and dress really casually. I don't want to be overwhelmed by fabric, need to tame these big ones.
So today's lesson is right on! Thanks! MYH!

Ok, yes, lesson learned. It is a bit busy and bright at the same time. Probably a bit too much. Certainly not your style. You have a very specific elegant style. I generally chose scarves that were a lot like yours in the beginning. That's probably why we have a few in common and why I enjoy your posts so much. Toward late summer I had a burst of wanting brights. Hopefully I chose wisely. Only time will tell I suppose. Now I feel the pendulum swinging back to neutrals and more subtle color ways. Maybe it was a seasonal thing.

Alrighty.

I think this is quite lovely actually, but can readily see how this was a complete departure for you. I also get that that feeling of having a spotlight on you is no good. Its beauty made it worth a try though.

I wonder too if it's a combination of bright with a detailed design. When in DC store, the SA pulled out a crazy bright De la Mer and I actually felt my eyes doing something strange looking at it! It was overwhelming.

Hmmm, now I'm worried because I put the bright pink Balade en Berline on my Christmas list. Perhaps I should remove it. It's not a particularly busy pattern though. Hmmmm....

Just my two cents ladies: I think you are right Pocket. Busy, and Bright, and for me, TOO MUCH COLOR CONTRAST usually kills a piece--too much going on! The menthe that MYH did not like in her CDC scarf over worked color for me too. I love the design but busy, bright and the random color is overboard.

MYH: this is why the melon contrast hem on OUR Fleurs d'Indiennes makes me sad. I wish I loved it. :crybaby::pout:

Hey there scarfies! Thanks for making me feel better about my mistake but now that I look back, it's really quite funny. Pirula - do you like that colorway of Balade en Berlines because you want to incorporate a fuchsia into your collex? or is it the border you like? I saw another BeB that has fuchsia in just one corner but not the rest of the scarf so it looks like it might be more subdued? Maybe look into that one? Let me see if I can post a pic. Btw - I love this scarf. It doesn't do much for me flat but tied, it's really spectacular. If I didn't already have so many scarves, I'm pretty sure this one would have come home with me

Pirula I always like the way you choose and wear your scarves ,a lot.

I can see the Berline scarf ties well and maybe the fuchsia will be a good choice for you .

Thank you froufrou, that's very kind of you to say and gives me more confidence in my wish list choice.

Sparkle, yes I think it's the combination of bright AND busy. The Balade isn't busy so might be perfectly fine in a bright.

MYH: thanks for that alternate cw; it's lovely too you're right! The reason for my selection is the bright pink hole it fills in my collection. But I also love the small hits of purple and lime green, as well as the red and orange.

So okay, it's staying on my wish list. We'll see!

Awesome tutorial!! [emoji122]🏻

OK, Session 1 of the 140cm Giant Silk Tutorial

OK, first. The triangle. It's huge and we gotta make it smaller. Instead of just starting at the top and scrunching/accordion fold it down, I first make TWO big folds down about 6-7 inches wide before I do a couple of scrunches. Why? Well, if you just start scrunching at the top, you will get alot of folds and in my opinion, this can look too messy and busy around ones neck. Kind of reminds me of a sharpei.

Sharpei!!!!! BWAH HA HA!!!! :lolots::lolots:

Great. I'll never be able to scrunch my shawls again without thinking of this.

Super tutorial, MYH. Your instructions and photos were very clear.

Quadruplets on the navy, royal blue, and turquoise Coup de Fouet (or whatever the colorway is)!

Like Pocketbook Pup, I longed for CdF in this colorway after seeing TangoTosca model hers. When this scarf showed up on Ann's Fabulous Finds last week, I made a mad dash to grab my credit card ASAP. If my office door had been open at the time, someone might have been alarmed at my frantic behavior and asked if I was ok. Yes, I got the navy CdF! Oh wait, few people outside TPF would understand... :smile1:

I also blame TangoTosca for making me want Lumieres de Paris in stained-glass heaven blues. That scarf is absolutely gorgeous. Sigh. I'm not getting my hopes up that the scarf with appear on the resale market for a reasonable price. Oh well.

Yay!! Congratulations dhfwu! :yahoo: I saw that Coup de Fouet on Ann's last week and now you're it's happy new owner! I'm so glad you finally found it and I'm sure you'll adore it. And maybe Lumieries will come along one day too, and at a price not requiring of a second mortgage on your house :giggles:

OK, Session 1 of the 140cm Giant Silk Tutorial

It is my belief that there is nothing you can't do with a 140cm giant silk that you can't do with a 140 CSGM. All you need to know are a few simple concepts
1) use knots strategically to help you
2) take into consideration that this scarf will slip so you need to consider gravity and weight
3) consider a quick wash or dry clean because you want this scarf to drape and not be too starchy

Before we begin, I'd like to say please interject with questions! I would love to hear back from everyone. If you have something to add or have better way to do it, please share with the class! We all want to know, including myself. Participation is key because we all want to learn from each other. OK, now turn off your cellphones. This is going to require total focus and concentration. Just kidding!

Let's begin with a simple cowboy knot. I know that's how many of you like to wear your CSGMs and there are a couple of variations I can show you.

First do your big folds

Then scrunch a few times

If you don't fold

If you do fold

A big hint here. I don't leave a big triangle when doing cowboy. It's my personal preference. My triangle bit is only about a foot long. I am petite and if you think about it, I only have about a foot of real estate on my chest for a scarf if I want it to stay above my waist line.

If you like a big triangle, then by all means, go for it. It also will leave you less tails to work with though.

OK, let's continue.

Now you have a small triangle folded and scrunched and are ready to drape this whole thing around your neck. Pick it up carefully and using your best coordination skills, tie a square knot around the back of your neck. You want one tail going one direction and the other tail going the other. If this is really hard for you because there is so much fabric, you can also try just tying the knot while setting the scarf on your floor or bed. Trust me, the hole will be big enough for you to just put it on over your head after you have finished tying the knot.

View attachment 3184660

OK, now just adjust the tails as you like around the front of your body. Voila! All done

View attachment 3184661.

Now some variations

Variation 1 - I know many of you like to do this cowboy weave know with your CSGMs. You still can. Just leave the knot in place and do the weave like you normally do.
This is how some of us like to wear our CSGMs
View attachment 3184665

You can do the same with a giant silk
View attachment 3184666

Variation 2 - Bring the tails around front and tie in a knot. To be honest, variation 2 stays put even without the knot in the back of my neck for me because it is nicely balanced. The tails and little knot in the front counterbalance the triangle bit in the front. But if you want to take out an insurance policy on this variation, keep the knot in the back of your neck.

Ok, there you go folks. 3 ways to wear a cowboy knot without slippage or constant adjusting. C'est facile non?

Any questions?

Omg!! Thank u so much for taking the time to do this MYH!! Forever grateful and now I am more in awe than ever!!! How effortlessly u do this!!! Ur skills and knowledge r just amazing!!! Outstanding [emoji122][emoji122][emoji122][emoji122]

Absolutely stunning!! And Ms Gris T look fabulous with it! :D:D

This is a wonderful colorway. Almost a 70s vibe to the coloration that is very very cool.

I, too, love the idea of being enveloped in a huge square of fabric but cannot pull the trigger on a CSGM for similar reasons to you; the pills and the fuzziness...UGH! Also, I agree that at H prices, an item should at least SEEM like it will last close to forever.

As such, I also would likely start with a 140 silk if I move over to large format. I just need to find the right pattern as, like you said, they are so limited each season. I think I am an oddball in that I prefer the feeling of all silk to that of the CS blend as well; I know that may seem strange to many on here but to me, nothing beats the smooth, cool feeling of silk against the skin. One question, do you feel the 140 silk keeps your neck warm enough in very cold weather? I generally "run hot" anyway so wool and cashmere often make me feel to warm. If the silk gives "adequate" warm for you, it would likely be perfect for me LOL.

BJS - if you are looking for medium warmth and love the feel of silk like me, this format is for you! Seriously. I think for a guy, there have been some designs recently you could work with. brides de gala (not sure if you like the wide border), perroquets (the navy blue cw is nice), cuirs desert (look into this one, I think there are some masculine cws). i don't think you are probably into les cles and folklore. I also think a few seasons ago psyche is a good one. All have been shown here on this thread in various cws. You can tie it so it's warm or you can tie it so it's not so much. I think it is the perfect format for you.

I am so happy to hear you got this one on AFF. Congrats!

MYH, I have loved your scarf thread! Can't wait to see you in your 140s! And honey, I have a nice little C/S collection and unlike my friends who LOVE them, I count every pill, any snag or run torments me and I count them too. BUT, they do hang and wrap in a cowboy knot beautifully, luxuriously..... Maybe one, okay? XO
Thank you honey! I'm glad to know you are like me. Frowny face at the fuzz and snags. I hate those. Makes me grumpy and puts me in a crappy mood when I see them. We gotta be more like lanit! Just let it go, let it go. It's not important.

:ty: ladies you makin' me :blushing:
PT - you have been an inspiration to me too! So many of your pics are uber stylish. I can totally see you walking around London turning heads babe.

Thanks MYH this thread is great, looking forward to seeing more :smile1:
You're welcome! Thanks for stopping by

Kate - I die! I die! Love both of these. Taming is easy! Fold, scrunch, fold, repeat. You will master this size love I promise! You have a raisin bag coming at Cmas? Please do tell darling. We all want to hear about it. Pretty please?

Um, could you show us how you do this one? Mine never comes out looking this nice... :nogood:
Yes tomorrow's lesson will go over this. I love it. One of my favorite ties.

Thank hon! Keep the berline cw. I think the ladies here are right. Can't be bright and busy but BeB has a cool relaxed design with "white space" so it should be totally fine. Did you try it on in the store? Did you love it?

So happy I could make you laugh! I'm not into mega scrunching. It's a school of thought in scarfing. You either are or aren't

Some wonderful tricks to try MYH. Thank you!
You're welcome EL4B and PbP. I'm happy to enable more scarf purchases. :graucho:

I didn't, in fact I don't think they even had it.

These should be good colors on me though, based on past experience.

In any case the boys may choose something else! Who knows?! Of course, then my birthday is in January. [emoji4]

This is great news. You already know fuchsia looks great on you. I think it will be a winner. And a B-Day in Jan. I would be bursting with excitement. I see alot of H in your future.

Thank you! So many people use it and it looks so good, but I can't seem to make it work.
It's so funny you say this because I always felt the same way. Why does it always look better on everyone else than on me? And now you say mine looks great. lol! life is so funny. But, did you know, there are two ways to tie this knot that yield almost identical results visually? I will describe both tomorrow

I did not know! Hm, maybe I will wear a 140 to work tomorrow so I can practice in real time...
