Thank you for this reply. You’ve made some really good points, but I want to clarify what I meant: I think that it’s true that it’s a matter or personal taste and that opinions would be on a spectrum. The reason I care about what “internet strangers” think, is because I want to know whether some trends that I am noticing in society are actually happening, or whether they are just in my head... for example, I see that trends of being ‘chic’ and ‘elegant’ are moving away from very recognizable logos and toward very subtle luxury indicators. Same goes for professionalism. So I may not want to show up to work with a bag that I consider very attractive, but other people will find it vulgar due to the LV mono being splattered all over it. I think that this is as important to consider as your work attire and general demeanour.

I know that was your question. This is not a new question I mean literally there have been so many posts and purseblog entries on this exact same thing...

Again we are on a forum dedicated to LV bags and this means we don’t necessarily reflect what the people who are going to be around you would think. Our opinions can do nothing more than assure you that some people like LV and won’t find monogram tacky. I think a much better way would be to consider what you see being worn around you and would a monogram bag stand out for bad reasons.

But separately just as a personal opinion, I think for the most part, you are the only one that cares that much about what bag you are using. It’s much more likely that you are fussing and worrying way too much about what others think than the other way around. Most people honestly don’t care that much about others (not just in terms of bags). Of course there are exceptions...but really what bag you are carrying is probably just not a crucial piece of information to most people.

Also I agree with the others who have commented that you may want to think more about your whole outfit and how you style things than the specific piece of a monogram bag.

Whether or not something looks tacky or cheap really depends on the person wearing it, not necessarily the item itself imo.

I 100% agree with that comment. I have seen women looking very stylish with a monogram bag (for example a Speedy) and others not so much. It really depends on how you are presenting yourself out there :) . So it´s important that you feel comfortable and confident with the bag your are carrying.

Hello,

I am currently ready to purchase a new purse (the speedy b 25 and neonoe are the top contenders), but I am concerned that anything that is very obviously LV is too tacky/loud/cheap looking. I also have bags in epi and empreinte and don’t like these leathers.

I am a university professor and I’m concerned that mono or DE is unprofessional for work. Any thoughts? Anyone staying away from mono?
I’m a university professor as well and I wear Monogram bags. This is a new TT job that I started last fall. For the first few weeks, I didn’t wear my designer bags until I could gage the vibe in my college and in my department.

I also wear Hermès bags but that’s much easier as the vast majority of people in my community have no clue what a H bag is and couldn’t care less either.

The mono-print first signalled the superior workmanship of LV craftsmen/women for the innovative design of the waterproofed canvas, flat-topped trunks (that could therefore be stacked) more than a century ago. The nod to Japanese symbols and characters denoting a widely travelled and experienced explorer who didn't compromise on leading a quality life wherever they went.

So no.

On the other hand LV is not the only excellent leatherwear brand out there. Hermes, Delvaux, Moynat, Valextra and Gucci make beautiful leather goods with no or very little visible logos/branding. Of course they all have their better known pieces too. It's about choice. Look around before you decide.

I do not think LV monogram handbags are tacky. I do not understand why anyone would think that they are. I think monogram handbags are classy, chic, well made, durable, be worn with classic clothing as well as worn with jeans. I do not think LV monogram handbags should be excluded from being worn in any situation including professional settings.

I think what may be going out of fashion (I hope, lol) is "logomania" with a designer's name plastered in large letters literally all over everything. Louis Vuitton monogram was in style long before this craze, and I believe it will continue to be in style long after logomania is over. Having said that, you should feel comfortable wearing your bag to work or you will not be able to carry it with confidence. Unless you believe carrying a monogram bag will influence your career negatively (promotions, etc.), I think that most people are so wrapped up in their own world that they may notice the first day but by the second day they will be on to something else, LOL.

As far as professionalism, I think this is gauged more by how you carry yourself and interact with other people. As long as you are not following every other trend, such as jeans with holes in them, graphic t-shirts, and the same designer for everything such as your bag, belt, shoes, and scarf, then just carrying one nice designer bag, even with logos, will not detract from a professional look, in my opinion.

The bags you are considering are both classic and iconic bags from Louis Vuitton. If you want to think of this more as a professor, you can consider form, function and because of the longevity of a Louis Vuitton - cost-per-wear :) So, if someone does comment on your bag, you can very nicely explain why you carry Louis Vuitton!

My personal taste has changed over time. I own lots of DE and mono bags.. neverfull and artsy to name a few. I don’t really go for them much lately. My style has changed to preferring more understated bags (although I include empreinte in that variety because while it does have the logo stamped all over it, it’s not that common mono canvas you see everywhere).
My most used bags are a few empreinte bags in noir, and the Hermes Evelyne.

I work in the aerospace industry and I see a lot of woman (managers/high level leadership) carry LV in GM sizes all the time, maybe its just this 'secret sisterhood' that I can appreciate seeing someone else carry it lol I think its all personal choice; life is too short to worry about what is tacky and what is not.

So which bags do you carry to work?

I use my ponthieu empriente almost everyday for work and daily use. Occasionally I use my artsy in marine as I think the navy is overall understated. I just don’t like the monogram and don’t own anything in it except small things like key case and cosmetic bag. Just personal preference. Somehow monogram seems for younger to me perhaps? But I love the empriente leather and use these as my daily everyday bags!
