Michael Kors Is Michael Kors Dying down?

I do like that MK has more embellished and cutesy designs lately. I know that it is the trend to have flower or stud embellishments, or even scalloped edges, and I think they've come out with some adorable ideas. I do not think they're quite as whimsical as what you see with Kate Spade or Betsey Johnson, but I think they found the right amount of "cute" for their brand.

MK is still popular where I live, but I think the monogram isn't as popular as it once was. The bold colors and embellishments are the ones I see more frequently.

I also think the Michael Kors Jet Set Totes are well done for professional purposes. I think the sizing, slip pockets and cushion inserts are perfect for people like me who have a lot of old "low tech" things like pens and notebooks, as well as my "high tech" stuff like laptop, e-Reader and cellphone. I didn't find that the TB or Coach had anything that was so functional, stylish and affordable. I hope they continue with their Jet Set collection, at the very least. I think they have a large fan base.

Every designer has their ups & downs. I do think MK is still popular in many areas of the US even thought the market is over saturated. Outlets seem to be everywhere. I haven't bought any new releases because I have over 25 MK bags that I rotate depending on the season & what I will be using the bags for. For the price point, I still think MK is a good value & quality. I still enjoy carrying my MK bags daily. Everyone has their own perspective of what they like & what they look for in quality. I haven't had a problem with any of mine. I tend to favor sleek bags without logos. I also like his Collection bags of which I have 4. I never have been one to jump on the "This is the IT ( insert what ever designer name here) item" trend that so many fall prey to. I'm too old to play Keeping Up With The Jones.
Yes , this forum is not as busy as it use to be & that's a shame. I check in several times a day as my schedule allows. It would be nice to hear from some of the older members but as time passes, people move on to other things. Such is life.

Hi! I’ve read several comments from you here on the MK Forum and I must say, I’m truly impressed by your knowledge on MK. I need an opinion from someone who seems to have used lots of handbags as I’m just getting started in the handbag world (been using a diaper bag as a purse for a year and a half now lol). I’m in the market for a new purse and I’m thinking about purchasing a dark dune Selma off of Mercari - it’s such a gorgeous bag. But I also have my eyes on the Chester Street Kacy backpack from Kate Spade.. which do you think has better leather? Do you think MK will hold up better over time? I’ve read a lot about Kate Spade’s logo fading a lot on her purses and wallets which is something I would rather not have happen. Let me know if there’s a better way to contact you about this or feel free to message me as I don’t want to bog up someone else post! Hope to hear from you soon

I dont own any Kate Spade so I can't comment on that brand. I do own several MK Selmas. All my Selmas have held up well & they have become some of the best workhorse bags I have. Proper care of a bag is crucial & I find saffiano leather bags the easiest to care for & the most durable.

I’m thinking I’ll go with the Selma. If I post photos on the authenticity thread, would you mind looking at them? Just to verify that it’s authentic since it is such a hard color to find.

I would go with the Selma. I do like Kate Spade, but I think MK has better leather and will hold up better with time and usage.

Thanks! I did end up going with the MK. I’m so excited, should be here tomorrow. The Kate Spade backpack just looked like it would fall apart easily. I’ve had one other MK (Jet Set Tote) and I loved it. So I’m hoping to have the same reaction with the Selma.

I had a Kate Spade Matthews Street Camplin Satchel Bow Bag and a Newbury Lane, and personally I've found MK to be much higher quality. The leather on the Matthews Street Camplin felt thin and like plastic. The Newbury Lane was in the same price range as the MK Sutton at the time on EBay, but the leather on the Sutton is more substantial and feels better and thicker than the Newbury Lane. To me, the Newbury Lane also feels a bit like plastic or some synthetic material. Maybe higher end items in Kate Spade are of better quality, but MK delivered on quality for the same price as Kate Spade's Newbury Lane.

I've had my saffiano MKs for a few years now, and they all look as good as new. They've held their structure and because of their hardiness, they haven't shown the effects of daily use. They've been accidentally scraped on some surfaces (not very rough surfaces though), but the saffiano wasn't affected. The bottom corners haven't lost their colour and aren't scraped. This definitely 100% makes MK worth it in my opinion, because I've paid for quality and I received it, and the bags are holding up very well with time. I don't tend to buy trendy designs (studs, grommets), so I'm sure I won't have bags that look dated or that don't suit my age as I get older. Who knows though, some people are saying the classic Selma is beginning to look dated, which I completely disagree with! :P

I have the MK pebbled leather jet set messengers, but the leather dried out even though I condition them multiple times a year. They feel like dry skin, which is so unpleasant! Does anyone know how I can fix that? I don't buy pebbled leather from MK anymore after I experienced this with two jet set messengers. Their Sloan looks better quality for soft leather, but is way more expensive.

I'm so glad you went with MK! I haven't had much luck with Kate Spade (even though it was just two handbags and 1 makeup bag), and I would definitely recommend MK's saffiano over Kate Spade.

Ahhhh don't say the Selma looks dated to some people!! Hahaha I don't want a dated bag but I really could careless, I think the bag is beautiful and I really think that's all that matters.

I feel like pebbled leather should still stay moisturized with the leather cleaner.. that's so strange!

Congrats on your new MK! I love the Saffiano leather! They have kept their shape. I have several selmas and Suttons. I will keep these! The only bags that I’m selling are the Hamilton’s because they are too big for me!
