Does anyone know how to report national chain stores selling VERY close knock offs of designer bags? In Canada we have a HUGE chain called Le Chateau, and the other day I noticed two bags-one looked very similar to the Gucci Hysteria and another was almost identical to the Miu Miu Coffer (the only difference was that it didn't have the buckle on the back part of the bag-although it even had the little leather key holder attached!) When I went to another one today, they also had wallets in a very similar style to the Miu Miu coffer/ruched ones....I'm surprised that such a large chain could get away with this.

Any suggestions? I'm not sure if the designs have been changed enough that they were OKed and allowed to be produced-but I know from far away those bags could easily be mistaken for the real thing.

I doubt if they are doing anything wrong. There are lots of bags that are inspired by popular designer styles. I just saw a bag that was a blatant inspiration of the Miu Miu and it was made by a very popular surf/skate brand here in the U.S. I saw it at my local Macy's and I was surprised at how those styles had trickled down. It's pretty common, though.

I once got a bag from Le Chateau that looks identical to a Michael Kors bag. I did not know at the time, but it really did surprise me that a store that well-known would have to resort to knocking off well-known designers. The bag did not have any MK logos, but I still find it strange they chose to sell something like that.

Le Chateau is in the US as well, but is a lot more obscure. Forever 21 blatantly "copies" designs of popular bags- one example that springs to mind is the foley and corinna city tote that they imitated a while back. Sabina (leather handbag) is another company that has a lot of inspired-by designs. Not sure where the line is drawn here for intellectual property/copyright infringement but I'm sure the big companies have teams of lawyers to look out for their interests.

Did the bags have the gucci or miu miu logos? If they didn't then I don't think they are fakes and can't be reported. They may be "inspired by," and the store isn't doing anything wrong.

Yeah that's why I wasn't sure if they count as "fakes" or not-they're almost identical except for the fact they have no Miu Miu logos. The Gucci look-a-like I don't think has the Gucci label on the outside of the bag anyways, so the outside of the bag looks the exact same (although it would obviously have a Le Chateau tag inside).

It still bothers me that companies can't make up their own original designs and instead just copy what's already out there.

Handbag designs cannot be copyrighted because they're considered "functional." Terrible, but true. However, patterns can be copyrighted, so printed fabric bags receive some protection.

As the other gals mentioned, unless the store uses a trademark, they're on legally safe ground.

Ive been designing low to mid priced bags for several years. Every season our main job is to buy the hot bags of the season and figure out how to make them as cheaply as possible from PVC and with less hardware.
That is what the buyers want and unfortunately when you are designing a $59 bag you can hardly do anything innovative with the materials in your pricerange!

all of these mid to low priced chain retailers are allowed to sell knockoff bags. it's called the trickle down theory. they are not stepping on any toes as long as they aren't branding the bags with the original label's namesake.

nearly everything sold at these stores are watered down versions of high end designers. it cracks me up how many tpf members want to have the bags pulled but get so excited over a blatant knockoff of a roland mouret dress at a store of the same caliber.

as the designer in this thread stated, the masses want the same look of the current it bag, but for far less money. not everyone's life revolves around a bag and these chain stores are doing nothing wrong.

thanks canada's..
I dont feel like I am any less creative or good at what I do because I look to trends for inspiration. I think of it as more of a challenge actually.. to interpret a concept in an affordable way for everyone..
