Scarves How to Wear a 90cm Carre/Silk Twill Casually?

I love this thread! I wear a scarf nearly every day, but very rarely an Hermès scarf for exactly this reason. 140 mousselines I do wear because the floatiness allows for that casual "throw-on" (but they are pricey!!), and I have a couple cotton men's scarves like the Naoshima, but my 90s are in the boxes (and only two remain, Jungle Love dipdye and Mythiques Phoenix). Most days I wear an Etro silk scarf- they are softer and lighter almost like moussies and the patterns are usually very small - or something else very soft, light, almost bohemian - I love Inouitoosh. These work with my every day t-shirts and jeans, and all I do is loop them around my neck and let them fall as they will.
Basically I only wear "chuck on" scarves :p
This thread has given me some ideas to pull the 90s out and try them again :ty:

I want to thank everybody SO SO much for contributing to this thread. DH and I headed over to Melrose Place for some lunch and light afternoon shopping yesterday. So my first thought was uh oh! What to wear??? I want to look elegantly casual but not look like I tried to "dress up" to go shopping there. So I employed my trusty circle twist knot I learned from Azalie and Crochetbella. Thanks gals!I didn't get a picture because we were rushing out the door but I recreated the accessories. I wore a light gray t shirt with dark gray linen pants.

Beautiful! I tried to get a ball like you, but it didn't work, I always end up with a triangle ;)
Do you still think this scarf is a "dressy" one? :p

I'm sorry you can't get a round knot. Here's what I do. After I fold in bias, I hold it steady with my left hand and twist my right hand in a clockwise direction. Then when I go to tie the knot, I twist the direction of the knot in the same direction I was twisting before. I've tried this a couple of times and it always seems to work. I hope my instructions were helpful.

MYH, thank you for starting this thread. :D I love 'collecting' H scarves because they're just so beautiful but don't know quite what to do with them. I've downloaded the H knot app and browsed the Mai Tai blog and YouTube--still not much progress. I usually just wear my scarf under my coat but not with my outfits (business or casual). Hope to see more mod pics and suggestions for inspirations. I've promised myself not to buy any more 90 silks until I use each of the ones I currently own at least once (2 more to go).

Fabfashion - I've done the same as you regarding trolling the web for inspiration. Someone else mentioned that MaiTai's look was a bit too elegant for them and I agree. First off, I think the meaning of casual in different countries is vastly different. To me, France is in a whole league of its own. And even in the states, I think a New Yorker can pull off a different look than a Southern Californian. Street chic is so different depending on where you live. I think your discipline of making sure you already wear the 90cms you own is a good one. I hope this thread will help you achieve your goal. Then you can dive into the silky 90's again.

Hello there MYH, what an interesting thread you have started. When I first started buying H silks I never even wore scarves. On my first scarf buying trip, I was totally flummoxed as to what design, color or look I wanted to achieve with this artistic silk square. It took me forever to decide on a design, and I was so intimidated by the H boutique, I did not even think of returning or exchanging for another design. I still have that lovely pink silk which I plan on sharing on SOTD thread tomorrow.

My wardrobe and work needs have evolved from relaxed business attire to now decidedly casual style. I do meet with clients occasionally, or attend events and interviews so scarves are useful and fun for me as an accessory rather than any jewelry. 90 percent of my wardrobe are in minimal shapes, basic colors and pieces, so I find they work great with a colorful piece of silk. I almost always wear a denim jacket on the weekends, and I find the 90 carres are just fine with jeans and tee. I agree with chestnut. I simply knot and rarely use a scarf ring as I feel the look is too matronly or dated. I love to throw on a silk and sometimes don't do much more than tie one knot asymmetrically or wrap it around the neck a couple of times with a boat necked sweater in the fall. I rarely show both tails of a silk in front, I prefer one tail at the side or back and one in front. And I love wearing silk with a distressed leather jacket on occasion!

More to come, and how lovely of you to start this new thread! Look forward to seeing and posting some fun casual styles!

How exciting! Another queen of silks has joined us! :woohoo:Thank you for your suggestions. I think I many need to start looking into denim and leather jackets. I do find that helps immensely to add to the street chic look.

I love this look on you, MYH! As you demonstrate, the "necklace" can be worn long or short. Beautiful choice of scarf, too.

And Chestnutty, brilliant observations. Even if one secretly takes half an hour to achieve a "wad and throw" effect, one wants no give-away clues that one was thinking about the process. So no scarf rings for me on T shirt days.

Thank you Azalie! I used your knot again just recently. It was a revelation especially when I twisted the silk first before I tied the knot.

That's funny, I love that- getting dressed in the dark :)! For a short time, I did my makeup really early too, either in the bathroom or car in the garage, without great lighting, and one day, someone told me my blush was a bit too much, and OMG, yes, she was so right. So then I made sure not to put on my makeup until I arrived to work :)

Btw- papertiger, good seeing you here on the H forum, I remember a few years back, we were both on the YSL forum often as well :) if you could provide a link to how you wear your scarves, I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks Marbella for joining us. I am marveling at all you ladies that get dressed and put on makeup in the dark. I would look nothing short of a disaster if I tried this.

Well I think that looks great MYH!

I know others say leave off the scarf rings for casual and no points down the front but with a Mors (or actually most of SRs) you can bias fold (or not) put around your neck but outside your jumper/shirt and very simply pull both points through (but not too far up). With the Mors this creates two parallel lines, keeps the points very long and looks very cool. The chaine d'ancre will bring the scarf closer together but it will still work. Basically this is the scarf equivalent to the undone jacket (over a shirt and under a jacket it looks great too) and will be a bonus for scarves that you like to see more of the middle/whole design.

Papertiger - do you have a mors ring? Can you show some pics to demonstrate your instructions above? I must be slow today because I'm not following. I also have a mors ring so know what it looks like but can't imagine what you're describing. :ty:

Omg- I love that, so cute.

And quellefromage- so funny, I have recently seen some Etro scarves and contemplated getting one, I think you have motivated me to do it, since you said that they are softer.

After reading this thread and another one about the 90cm, I got inspired to retry the pirate scarf, which kept slipping off my head, and I finally got it :)! I wore pirate style to a kid's birthday party today and got lots of compliments, and the best part was it was hiding my roots and frizzed hair, lol!

I had no idea so many were in the same boat for early morning preparation. Happily my bathroom is OK for make-up, although if I'm pushed for luck I grab my Ellis Faar canister and do it on the train (very exciting). I totally recommend EF for foolproof makeup application BTW and their 'holder' is spillage proof. http://www.ellisfaas.com/collection/holders/holder/h101

I'm 'all over the shop' at tPF, I like all different kinds of things I only have 1 (unpopular) YSL bag, the Marjorelle but I am (should that be, was) a huge YSL RTW fan, so just for you here is a H-scarf (Quintessence) with YSL mac (and Gucci skirt, shirt, jewellery and bag)

Here are some more, but half-way between 'chuck on' and 'there was a mirror/reflective glass involved'. C'estLF is a 70, just think how long and 'flowy' it would be with a 90. Points to the front, no problem

and some more that are a bit more 'specialist' shots proving scarf rings don't have to mean smart and polished

The Clic Clac en Pois is only a 70, but is just as easy with a 90

Papertiger - oh my gosh - thanks so much for posting these pics. And Chestnutty just helped me figure out what you meant with the mors ring by providing a link to Ladybaga's modeling shot. I would love to add trench coat onto my list of jackets to buy but sadly it does not rain in LA. Your pic of quintessence with trench looks fantastic. Thanks for the suggestion of long flowy tails. I will keep that in mind and thanks so much for taking the time to post so many pics on this thread. Greatly appreciated!

Most of my scarves are in 90 because it is the perfect size for me. And I only wear them casually, with tshirts, cashmere sweaters, or plain white dress shirts. I usually just drape them around my shoulders. I add a small bolduc scarf ring in the middle for weight, and haven't experienced the scarf falling off at all. And the scarf ring in the back is hardly visible.

LesBoitesOrange - I will try your trick of sliding on a small scarf ring in the middle to keep the scarf in place. I was always afraid a breeze would blow by and I would be picking my scarf off the dirty ground!

Thank you for starting this thread! I've always been a scarf wearer and in the past few years very much enjoying my H adventures. I really don't do anything at all clever with my scarves - just a simple knot with tails hanging (or tucked in) or tied at the back for more warmth. I only have the 90s and one gavroche (this is so wonderful!). It's only this year I ventured into wearing the 90 as a backless top on an extremely hot and humid day on holiday :D
Couture Coco - these pics you posted are great! I think what helps your casual vibe is your white pants but sadly, I look terrible with white pants. I'm just not slim enough. But for those that do have white pants and white top (bonus), put them on! As Couture Coco has shown, it does wonders for a scarf. I even notice that in Hermes's scarf knotting app, the model is wearing all white. I think it was photographed that way because a) it helps the scarf stand out and pop against the outfit but b) it also imparts a cool chic look to get younger customers interested in buying silk scarves that were typically thought of as matronly.

My 90 CS today for SOTD - the fringe makes is so cool and this feels even cozier than the recent bandanas! More photos on SOTD.

Thank you for starting this thread, MYH, and so sorry I just now came across it. I am the queen of the casual tie! I look like an old lady if I'm too pulled-together and I can't for the life of me achieve a proper knot anyway.:laugh::laugh: I also get dressed in the dark and am always in a rush.

Until recently all I had was 90s, so I quickly became comfortable with the format.
Here's my grande tenue, one of the most traditional scarves and full of "sophisticated" gold, wrapped in a cheap chili pepper necklace.

Here is grands fonds, casually tied with a t-shirt from Gap.

Here is Ex Libris en Kimonos (sistahs!) with a top from Gap.

Momasaurus - your eLenK were a feast for my eyes. I love the colors in it and the shirt you wore to match it. What I learned from your pics is that the lighter, brighter, fun colors help a scarf look more casual. I will keep this in mind when I am at the scarf counter next time. And a fun color t-shirt as a backdrop is even better.

I love this tie (I call it the bib) and use it constantly. But, MYH, I think there are definitely scarves that in themselves are more formal. For me, L'art d'écrire (mine is white and navy, already a formal color combo, IMO) and L'instruction du roi (all those scrolls and ironwork) cannot be worn as bibs.

Yes, thanks, lanit. I was surprised to find Kimonos in MYH's more sophisticated drawer. I think the riot of colors offers lots of casual fun. Maybe give it a try as a bib, MYH?

It seems that many think my cw of eLenK can still be casual. I will try it as a cowboy or "bib" soon and post pics.

Quellefromage - thanks for joining us and for your tips as well! I do have one Etro scarf and I will agree, it is much softer and silkier than my H ones. I might need to make a pitstop at Etro next time I'm in NYC to see what they have to offer and then hit up H as well, can't skip H!

This entire collection of photos continues to amaze the eyes PT. Can't wait to see what's in store for the zebra silks:)

Some terrific styling lesboitesorange!

:hugs:

Thank you my dearest. I'm always apologising but due to a house move I don't have any mirrors up yet. Just cast your mind back to markova's "demented 5 year old" comment on a photo when trying to reach a mirror one time for shot and you'll understand my reticence at waiting until i'm organised before taking any new modelling shot-selfies (although BF did take one of me with my new DD LDdCM, he just needs to send it).

Talking about ZP, I just bought the Bronze ZP too. I don't normally take return scarves, I know it will be useful and practical, it was the one I was waiting for out of all of them but now I'm not sure :shrugs:

I believe Ladybaga wore it the way that Papertiger described earlier.

 like the fabulous Ladybaga or even symmetrically like me in this (accept I'm wearing double). The Mors shouldn't move much, they just magically stay

Great idea, lesboitesorange I'm going to try this myself (it'll just have to be another scarf ring)
