Scarves How to Wear a 90cm Carre/Silk Twill Casually?

Team silk - I've come up with another one I rather like but it's hard to follow in Arabesques footsteps!

This one is definitely for cooler temps. There's quite a lot of fabric around the neck and feels like a cozy turtleneck. But not suffocating! I don't like tight things around my neck. I can see this knot worn with a cashmere sweater or filling in a neckline of a button down shirt for work. It also comes out a little different each time. If I had to name it I would call it the cowl. If you all think it's a good one, I will try to post instructions. Here it is with three different scarves.

Dear MYH, can you please tell me the name of the first scarf in terracotta and green, it is lovely :-)

Hello Lovers of the Challenging 90cm silks!

I've been over at the Fall 2014 thread, where I was showing off some new-to-me knots that have me over the moon about 90cm twills again. For a long, long time, I haven't worn them, so I understand how challenging they can feel. A good knot is a gem. I was asked to give some tutorials, and a scarf suggested I post it here.

I have five knots in total to share over the next couple of weeks (it takes time to do the photography!). I'm starting with the simplest, which also has the most variants. You really can't do this scarf knot wrong. And if you can, then just start over again and it will come out different.

Le Knot Chou-chou (image 1)

Step 1: Lay out scarf like a diagonal, face side down.

Step 2: Take two opposite ends (doesn’t matter which ones). Do a simple half knot.

Step 3: Pull these knot ends in the direction of the other (non-knotted) ends of the scarf.
Oh Arabesques.....where have you been all my life! Thank you!

MYH, you have restored my love for my silk 90's!!! I am so excited, I'll try not to gush. I'm very late to the party, but just today I decided to read this thread from the beginning and I came across your posts from early November about what you called the " cowl." At first I just thought your scarves were lovely and really liked how you tied them. Reading on, I came to your wonderful graphic instructions, using Ms. Canti and decided to try it. I took out my 18 scarves, which I had mostly stopped wearing because the knot down the front look was boring and always seemed to showcase the border only. The beautiful design and colors of the center that I had fallen in love with, really couldn't be seen. Following your perfectly described instructions, I tried the first one. What a revelation!! It was beautiful, and really seemed to flatter my face and hairstyle and the the real beauty of the scarf was breathtaking. Such was true with every scarf in my collection! So, many, many thanks for giving new life and new excitement to my scarf wardrobe. xxoo

Luvquality - you made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I'm so glad this thread helped reignite your passion for the 90cms. Can we see the scarves you tried the ascot cowl with? Momasaurus is also a big fan of this knot. I'm sure she would love to see too!

Hi all- I recently bought a playful scarf in a fun cw and thought it would be perfect for this thread. It's the new SS2015 maison des carres in a 90cm. Interestingly, because this scarf is so whimsical, it is easier to get away with it looking casual in more traditional knots. Aside from the typical cowboy, assymetric cowboy, necklace knots, I also tried a traditional bias fold with simple knot and an askew ascot knot (make sure to wrap the tail that goes over twice around the other tail so it doesn't slip). I think for me the trick is to make the tails a bit sloppy, not perfect so I avoid the square knot. You want to look like you quickly just threw in your scarf and dont care if it looks perfect.

And here's a variation cowboy knot with scarf ring.

I particularly love the cowboy knot with the scarf ring, I am definitely going to try that tomorrow. Exciting!

Yes, I'm always happy to see how the ascot cowl works out. It's different every time!

Hello Scarfies! I'm hoping some of you will come out and play with me on this thread. I got the idea from the "How do you wear your Kelly casually" thread because I seem to have an issue with 90cm silk twill scarves. I have a heck of a time figuring out how to tie and match these silky treasures to my casual outfits. I recently moved to LA and my outfits here are so much more casual than on the east coast. On most days, I'm running around in a Vince T-shirt (black or gray) and linen pants. I would love to wear my 90cm silk carres with this outfit but they just seem incompatible.

I've heard many of you say "I've put myself on a 90cm ban" and I too have done the same, but unfortunately, most of the new designs that come out are in this format. So although I'm not supposed to buy new 90cms, I always do because they are too beautiful to resist. So instead of feeling guilty about the 90cms in my drawer, I'd like to try and figure out how I can get more use out of them. I'm hoping many of you also are in the same boat as me, and collectively, we can share ideas, modeling pics, musings, etc. about our little dilemma. And only buying 140cms, can sure do some damage to my wallet! I have my fair share of CSGMs, 140 silk twills, and 140 mousselines, but they are expensive (yikes!) and the design and colorway selection is limited.

Here are some random thoughts but if you have any new ones, please share them!

So my first idea was...maybe the silky material of a 90cm carre and typical t-shirt material just don't "go together"? Even my nicer Vince t-shirts seem incompatible with silk twill. Have any of you found a T-shirt brand that you swear by that work with 90cm silk twills?

Then I jumped to, perhaps I just need to find the right knot? I find the typical ways of wearing scarves look formal/dressy. Or is it just me? To me, a cowboy knot is pretty casual, but what other knots also emit this casual vibe? Do you have any suggestions? Would love to see pics!

And lastly, is it the design and/or cw that gives a 90cm its formal or casual vibe? For instance, will scarves that have gold, black, and white always look more dressy than a scarf that has many different bright colors? Or does the design have more to do with it? Is there a design "type" such as fun or whimsical that gives the scarf it's casual personality? I'd really like to get everyone's opinions on this because then I can focus my searches to just the casual designs and cws?

I'm hoping as a big scarf community, we will have some killer suggestions and answers to this seemingly widespread problem.

:ty:

MYH - I was on a 90 ban for quite some time (nearly a year), and after playing with some new knots and trying out more graphic H designs, I still love the majority of my silks and found renewed interest in them again. My latest is a Grail silk I searched several years for. I first tried it on at the Festival Metier silk exhibit and I knew I would have a hard time finding it on the secondary market. I was so very happy to find it, and it was worth breaking my silk ban several times over for. Sometimes a design and colorway resonates so deeply within us that it makes the wearing of it so very special. A Honore really did make this one of her signature silks, as well as the La Femme design. I hope you can see wearing it with a Tee shirt is the best way of celebrating our love of wearing the silks casually!

Happy St. Pat's Day too to everyone!

Happy St. Pat's Day too to everyone!

Lanit that scarf is fabulous, I can completely see why it became your grail, it's divine. Funnily enough I have suddenly developed a yearning for another Aline Honoré design just today ( Le Voyage de Pytheas) and was looking at all her designs as I think she is a designer I really like. Oh dear, I see I am technically off topic again, so to get back on topic I might add that my way of wearing silks casually is when walking the dog, while wearing wellingtons. I like to feel I have a bit of Hermès glamour hidden away under my muddy dog walking coat!

Oh lani , this is a beautiful colorway, and it makes you glow!
I have a bit of a love affair with this design, and have multiple CWs, but not this one!
