How many bags are too many bags?

Yes. You have too many when based on your style of bag carrying, you don't get to use every bag enough in a season or year for the purchase to be "justifiable." Then again, because of lifestyles...I think there is a point where you feasibly shouldn't add more bags.

I just caught myself about to buy yet another tote to add to my very healthy and young collection and I had to pry my fingers back and run out the store....yeah I know. So what is your limit? And Why?

I understand completely. Now that I'm older, wiser has finally caught up with me. Recently I have refined my collection to 16 bags. 2 totes, one for fall/winter and one for spring/summer. 6 bags are definitely spring/summer, while the rest can transition throughout the year, though I rarely carry any of my 4 black bags during the summer months. My eureka moment came when I looked at a preponderous of bags in my collection (at one time numbering more than 30 :shame:) that I rarely/never wore and had only to have.

Congrats on your recent restraint. You're on the right path!

:woohoo:

I know exactly where you are coming from. I also try to make sure I have the right amount without having too many bags. This ensures that I use all the bags I throughout the year during the different seasons. I try to keep a one in and one out policy and make sure I keep the number around 15 or 16 bags total.

Although recently I have been on a little bit of a buying spree with the new Massaccesi line of bags. They are handmade in Italy and the leather and style are amazing but the price is pretty reasonable. Normally I would not splurge but I have bought three of their bags in the last 6 weeks. Not the norm for me but you have to indulge every now and again.
:smile1:

I think for me max number is 15. Even then that number will be too much. I do not have a walk in closet so space is restricted and a good reminder to stop. Now I will only buy if the bag is from a brand I really love and the design and style is something I do not have in my collection but will complete it. Right now I have 12 in rotation, not counting synthetic leather ones.

I just bought 3 more on vacation in Europe these last couple weeks. I have I think 30 bags now :hrmm: I'm actually a little embarrassed, I'm running out of space in my closet. I feel guilty about not being able to wear them all.

I've been downsizing / upgrading as well over the course of this year and am keeping 11 purses (after my last purchase arrives), 4 clutches & 5 SLGs. Unless something new is dramatically different from something I already own, I've been good at the 1 in / 1 out policy

To help stay on track, I wrote out a list of all my purses, colors, sizes, types of handles, hardware & material in my iPhone notepad. That way if I'm tempted while out shopping I can see my list and determine "nope, already have one" or "what do I have to get rid of to make room for this" & then decide whether I'm prepared to do that. Helps tremendously with impulse purchases!

I have done the same! It helps !

That's such a good idea! I have an "inventory" list in Excel on my laptop of nearly everything in my closet, and I think it'd be a good idea to keep it on my phone too. I'm a big impulse buyer.

I draw the line when I feel overwhelmed and guilty by the number of unused bags. I felt that way at the beginning of the year and sold/gave away 5 bags. Now have a wishlist I strictly adhere to. The bags on my wishlist have been thought through long and hard.

After recently giving two bags to charity because I hadn't used them in a couple of years, I now have four day time bags (one each of MK, LAMB, LV and Coach) and two smaller party purses (one KS and one MK), plus two wallets (one LV and one MK) and one key pouch (LV). Other than replacing them when they wear out I'm happy keeping the numbers I have - enough for a variety but few enough that they all get used.

Great thread!
I started a similar thread in the Shoe section-
http://forum.purseblog.com/the-glass-slipper/how-many-pairs-is-enough-868297.html

I feel a bit ashamed when "outsiders" (even family members) see my closet and shoe/bag collection. That's definitely a sign that I have too many. I probably have close to 20 bags, and way too many shoes- (probably 60-70). I'm due to downsize again for sure!

I draw the line when:

1) There's no more room in my closet (I have capacity for 10-12 bags, depending on size)
2) The daily guilt from having so many unused, lovely, expensive bags starts to eat away at me

That's when I start selling. And then the cycle begins all over again. I'll find a new brand or style to be obsessed with, start collecting, and 5 years later my closet starts to overflow and the guilt is back. Time to sell again!

Now that I think about it, my run rate isn't too bad. 2-3 bags/year is pretty tame compared to what I see on this site! LOL.
