What is an Hermes Special Order?
Each year Hermes gives select clients the opportunity to customize a classic bag in a made-to-order a la carte process. This thread is only for bag A La Carte orders (please use the separate threads for watch SOs and shoe SOs). "A la carte", "SO" (special order), and "HSS" (horse shoe stamp) are used interchangeably on this forum.

When is the Special Order season?
Currently, there is one SO season each calendar year, opening around the middle of February and closing when slots run out or the end of December, whichever occurs first. New SO menus are typically leaked in February and remain constant until the following calendar year. Individual stores have complete discretion on when, within this window, they offer SO appointments to their clients.

Which specs can I customize?
Hermes defines which specs can be customized and these specs can change each SO season. Generally these specs include: leather type, leather color, and hardware color. At your SO appointment, your SA will present you will the limited menu of choices including bag types and sizes (Birkin 25, Kelly 28, etc), pre-set combination designs (line, verso, multico, etc), leather choices, leather colors, hardwares, and a map for which options can be selected for which bag type and size. Not all leathers and hardwares are allowed for all bag types and sizes.

Can I make physical changes to a bag definition during SO?
Sometimes clients would like to change a physical aspect of a bag, like increase the handle drop or add a pocket or a strap. Unfortunately, Hermes does not allow any type of alteration to the bag definition during SO. For extensive changes like these, a client would need to pursue a “Horizon order” which can be read about here.

How long will my SO take?
There is no way to predict how long a SO will take from placing the order to receipt of the finished product. Although Hermes has recently put forward efforts to fulfill a la carte orders within a year, it isn’t uncommon for bags to arrive in just a few months or also much longer than the year estimate.

Can my SA give me status my existing SO?
Unfortunately, the info that can be seen by SAs at the local store is very limited. They can generally see if the order is still outstanding (ie hasn’t been cancelled) but do not get status updates beyond that. Some stores will update clients when they get notice that a bag has been shipped from Paris but other stores wait until the bag is physically in store before alerting the client.

Do I need to place a deposit for SO?
In most regions of the world, a deposit is not required for SOs. However, some Asian and Middle Eastern locations do seem to request at least a partial deposit. Deposits may also be required in other regions if the SO selections are very personalized (ie if you have your personal initials hot stamped onto the bag) such that selling the bag to a different client, if the original client declines the bag, would be difficult.

Do I receive confirmation of my SO after placing my order?
In most regions of the world, the client gives their specifications to their SA and that is the last they hear about it until the bag arrives. Paris stores seem to be an exception to this and send the client a confirmation email within a few weeks of placing the order.

Is there a premium for a SO bag?
No, there is no premium price for SO bags. Their price is the same as any other standard stock bag of the same specifications at the time of delivery.

Is my SO a quota bag?
SO bags are generally counted toward a client’s two-bags-per-year limit at the time that the bag is received and paid for. If a client has already maxed out their quota bag allocation for the year, some stores will allow an exception to purchase your SO as a third bag for the year while other stores will require the customer to wait until a new calendar year before receiving the bag. These policies are subject to be changed per store at their convenience so it is always wise to check with your specific SA.

Where can I get ideas for my SO bag?
This thread shows unique combination bags and this thread shows contrasting stitching bags. Please consider posting your bag there once it arrives!

It’s interesting because Bleu Jean comes with the white stitching so I believe that “tonal” for BJ means white. There also is no “Bleu Jean” named thread color. OP would have to choose from this list. A blue-grey might look beautiful though for minimum contrast.
Thank you acrowcounted. I have a BJ Kelly twist bracelet and while the stitching is definitely not white it is ever so slightly lighter than the leather. I will report back after my appointment 🙏🏻

Hiii periogirl28! Thank you soooo much for your generous and detailed advice - I appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, it really helps to put things into perspective.🧡

I’ll definitely stay loyal to the boutique that offered my bags and continue building my relationship there, as you suggested. Your point about expressing interest clearly but only once is also a great reminder!

May I ask just to clarify - when you mention ‘do this if you are invited to place a wish.’ - do you mean the regular quota bag wish, or there is a ‘wish’ related to the ALC order? (because for the regular quota bag wish, I already placed one last time right after my wishlist was fulfilled).

Thank you again and I’ll keep you posted if anything progresses!!
I would advise checking with your SA, as depending on individual SM/ store policy and UK Corporate, they might rather a client only have one current wish or a pending SO order and not both simultaneously. This might explain the reactions you noticed when you mentioned a SO to both SAs. One possible option was to have brought it up after your last wish was fulfilled and perhaps been offered a SO slot instead of a new wish. 👌🏼

Based on my own experience and what has been shared with me, (for Europe and Asia and likely worldwide) SO slots are allocated to SAs (possibly depending on seniority) by the SM and ultimately the individual clients have to be approved using whatever criteria is country policy.
Paris works very differently and always has. FSH being the flagship also has a huge bag PO and SO quota. The SM is essentially overseeing a small department store so bag offers and SO slots are generally approved by senior SAs in leather and one other department.
About 19 years ago I had only one B30 and my Barenia Picotin purchase from FSH when I was assigned to my SA who was then in leather. At that first appointment we could not find anything suitable in size or colour for me and I was then offered my very first SO slot. Although I have seen changes come and go with the process it essentially remains the same at this store. Certain SAs are able to offer these slots directly. Some clients are invited once the new season opens. SOs may be placed remotely and in the past even shipped to clients.
Whatver it is, it remains a very special personalised offer and one to be cherished.

Does anyone know how many Special Orders each SA gets to offer Annually? Or does it vary based on certain SAs? Ty
In the USA, this is very dependent on store size/budget. And it changes annually. I shop with a small store and sadly their allocation was decreased last year, the entire store had FIVE SO spots last season and again this season, so as you can imagine, not every SA was given the opportunity to offer to their chosen client. No exotic spots either. 🙁

I am not sure what criteria the manager has for deciding which SAs get those SO spots, and then which clients.

Thank you so much again - that makes a lot of sense now. I’ll check with SA regarding the store’s policy on having both an active wish and a pending SO.

I really appreciate your advice - timing and subtlety seem so important with these things!:drinks:

Fairy tales always begin with “Three apples fell from the sky…”

Three years ago, the princess fell in love with a jade green. In her most painful, agonizing days, she dreamed of it. For the princess was ill. Despite the relentless treatments that gnawed at her day by day, she did not waver.

Then, one day, after three long years, she was finally ready to find that green.

She searched, she inquired… and at last, a box was placed before her. Ah, she opened it—what a dream! But no, not her dream. No, she said.

Another box arrived… precious, oh so precious. But not her treasure.

At last, the one before her could not hold back any longer and asked:
Ah, dear princess, what is it that you seek?

And so, the princess began to tell her tale… to speak of the green she had seen three years past, of the love she bore for it.

The one before her laughed.
That green no longer exists, they said.

The sorrowful princess accepted this truth.
Then, she said, I thank you. But nothing else interests me.

Yet, just then, a mischievous smile played upon the lips of the one before her. They brought forth one last, most special box…

You, they said, are someone truly special. Your green must be special too…

And so, three apples fell from the sky. And the most jade-green of all was Rumes’ destiny.

I didn’t want to write before the confirmation email arrived.

I received a special order offer for my first (and most likely last) Kelly. I feel indebted to two people who sent me good energy throughout this process. @drvogue and @Angiebbb 🍀🙏🏻

Kelly 25, Sellier (Epsom) in Vert Jade with GHW—just as I saw it on display… needing no other customization, special enough as it is.

Of course, the stitching is still a mess in my mind. In that shock, I couldn’t ask for tone-on-tone. I accepted the closest Menthe option. I just hope I get my green without any disappointment.

I wish for the other two apples that fell from the sky to find their way to those who are meant to have them. 🤍

Congratulations on your SO and such a lovely story too!

I have this - a pending SO and an active wish, but I was informed that when the SO arrives, they close the wish since it counts as a QB for the year, and I need to open a new wish. Hence it seems it is best to wish for an easier bag, so the bag might come before the SO is done. I placed a very hard wish, and the one year mark is close. If my SO arrives in the next two months, I basically lost the entire year of my wish.

try not to be so negative; you are fortunate to have a SO in the pipeline
you realise that Hermes production does not follow a regular or predictable pattern
your wish has to be in place to give you the opportunity of being offered the bag of your wish, should it come into the boutique
so to use the awful jingle - you have to be in it, to win it

there is no guarantee that, even if your wish had been easier, it would have been fulfilled
feeling hard done by won't change the situation and you still have two months to go

the simple answer for the future would be to advise you to use your SO opportunity for this bag
but I know that is simplistic, because SOs are not a completely free choice and there are restrictions about what is available
so, you might not be able to order exactly what you want
