What are the current choices for "a la carte" Special Order bags?

What is an Hermes Special Order?
Each year Hermes gives select clients the opportunity to customize a classic bag in a made-to-order a la carte process. This thread is only for bag A La Carte orders (please use the separate threads for watch SOs and shoe SOs). "A la carte", "SO" (special order), and "HSS" (horse shoe stamp) are used interchangeably on this forum.

When is the Special Order season?
Currently, there is one SO season each calendar year, opening around the middle of February and closing when slots run out or the end of December, whichever occurs first. New SO menus are typically leaked in February and remain constant until the following calendar year. Individual stores have complete discretion on when, within this window, they offer SO appointments to their clients.

Which specs can I customize?
Hermes defines which specs can be customized and these specs can change each SO season. Generally these specs include: leather type, leather color, and hardware color. At your SO appointment, your SA will present you will the limited menu of choices including bag types and sizes (Birkin 25, Kelly 28, etc), pre-set combination designs (line, verso, multico, etc), leather choices, leather colors, hardwares, and a map for which options can be selected for which bag type and size. Not all leathers and hardwares are allowed for all bag types and sizes.

Can I make physical changes to a bag definition during SO?
Sometimes clients would like to change a physical aspect of a bag, like increase the handle drop or add a pocket or a strap. Unfortunately, Hermes does not allow any type of alteration to the bag definition during SO. For extensive changes like these, a client would need to pursue a “Horizon order” which can be read about here.

How long will my SO take?
There is no way to predict how long a SO will take from placing the order to receipt of the finished product. Although Hermes has recently put forward efforts to fulfill a la carte orders within a year, it isn’t uncommon for bags to arrive in just a few months or also much longer than the year estimate.

Can my SA give me status my existing SO?
Unfortunately, the info that can be seen by SAs at the local store is very limited. They can generally see if the order is still outstanding (ie hasn’t been cancelled) but do not get status updates beyond that. Some stores will update clients when they get notice that a bag has been shipped from Paris but other stores wait until the bag is physically in store before alerting the client.

Do I need to place a deposit for SO?
In most regions of the world, a deposit is not required for SOs. However, some Asian and Middle Eastern locations do seem to request at least a partial deposit. Deposits may also be required in other regions if the SO selections are very personalized (ie if you have your personal initials hot stamped onto the bag) such that selling the bag to a different client, if the original client declines the bag, would be difficult.

Do I receive confirmation of my SO after placing my order?
In most regions of the world, the client gives their specifications to their SA and that is the last they hear about it until the bag arrives. Paris stores seem to be an exception to this and send the client a confirmation email within a few weeks of placing the order.

Is there a premium for a SO bag?
No, there is no premium price for SO bags. Their price is the same as any other standard stock bag of the same specifications at the time of delivery.

Is my SO a quota bag?
SO bags are generally counted toward a client’s two-bags-per-year limit at the time that the bag is received and paid for. If a client has already maxed out their quota bag allocation for the year, some stores will allow an exception to purchase your SO as a third bag for the year while other stores will require the customer to wait until a new calendar year before receiving the bag. These policies are subject to be changed per store at their convenience so it is always wise to check with your specific SA.

Where can I get ideas for my SO bag?
This thread shows unique combination bags and this thread shows contrasting stitching bags. Please consider posting your bag there once it arrives!

I seek your help to choose my SO. I have an appointment next week and I am torn between two options: Kelly 28 retourne in clemence bleu jean with BGHW, interior Nata or birkin chèvre étoupe with RGHW, interior orange poppy.

My other 2 SOs are a Kelly sellier 28 chèvre rose Sakura interior framboise BPHW and a birkin 30 chevre gris perle interior vert Bosphore BPHW.

I am torn because I love bleu jean but cannot have RGHW on a Kelly and Clemence is not available for Birkin. I love étoupe but have already a Lindy in gris tourterelle and an arçon in origan. I also must say that my most used bags are in neutral colors although I love pop colors (I have bleu electric and ultraviolet Lindys).

I am grateful for any advice and suggestion 🙏🏻
I guess you rather want bleu jean because you name it first before étoupe ;-)
I would choose the bleu jean Kelly, and RGHW wouldn’t be great with that color, whereas brushed GHW has a nice casual touch.

Many thanks Muffin_Top. You guessed it right because I think BJ will be harder to get than étoupe outside of the SO process. Would you know if it I possible to have BJ without contrasting stiching ?

Would love some input on my current situation! So last summer my SA brought up a potential SO spot for 2025. It was coincidentally after I purchased some pricey FJ (lol). When she mentioned it, I was screaming inside, and thanked her and said that it would be an amazing opportunity. For context, I’ve been with the same SA and store for about 3 years, received QBs and Non QBs, and we have a wonderful relationship. In February, I went in and bought some other items (~10k) and she asked me then what I was thinking for my next bag. I said I would love a SO spot if available and haven’t stopped thinking about it since she mentioned it last year, it would be a dream of mine, etc. (I also had not brought it up again until that day when she specifically asked about next bag). She said the SO spots have to be approved by France and it can be a process, etc. There was no clear yes or no, just left ambiguous in typical H fashion. Fast forward to this week, she texted me asking what I’m thinking for my next bag, I said my fav combo and she replied that it may be very hard to find. I said I had no problem waiting, but would also love a SO spot if the opportunity was available. She didn’t reply until I sent another text that I would also think about some other desired combos and let her know, in which she replied immediately OK great! Once again, no real acknowledgment of the SO request.

Sorry to rant here, but just want to include all the details! My SA is wonderful and has been very intentional with promises and timelines- she has ALWAYS come through on all my exact wishes. Which is why I think it’s odd she brought up the SO, but is now evading the question. I have definitely made it clear I am interested. Maybe she gave her spots away or my profile isn’t “strong enough”? Wondering what your thoughts are. Thanks in advance for sharing <3

Well that’s the whole point of SO : you may choose any available stitching color, whether tonal, bright red or whatever.
So tonal stitching will be possible.

It sounds to me like you weren’t “approved” for a SO and she’s avoiding the question rather than saying a flat “no”, unfortunately. If it were a yes, she would probably be bubbling over with excitement to tell you/offer it. The store could have gotten a reduced budget than what they were expecting as that happened a lot this year so I wouldn’t hold it against your SA.

It’s interesting because Bleu Jean comes with the white stitching so I believe that “tonal” for BJ means white. There also is no “Bleu Jean” named thread color. OP would have to choose from this list. A blue-grey might look beautiful though for minimum contrast.

Thanks for your input. I agree she would be ecstatic to share if that were the case. I actually thought that's what she was texting me about! Maybe she feels bad she can't fulfill, so she's extra keen to get another wish on the list. I will keep dreaming of an SO and enjoy the ride until my day potentially comes:smile:

This is not about you or your profile. It's about whether your SA is approved or not. At most, it may be that your SA is simply not qualified enough to make sprecial offer to you.

Interesting- I had not considered that. I know she's not new at the store, but also not a veteran there. Maybe she got ahead of herself mentioning it prematurely. Thanks for your input! What are the typical "qualifiers" for the SA's to be able to offer a SO?

Respectfully, this isn’t true. SAs can have allotment but they still need the SM to sign off on which client gets the offer. Perhaps things are different at the Paris stores (though I doubt it) but everywhere else in the world requires SM approval.

Lol yes by "tonal" I meant a blue stitching, not the usual white one.
I'm sure the SA will have a better eye than us to chose the matching color.

In Paris, that day even for high-spending clients, the SM wasn’t approving bags, but I was offered an SO with a 1:1 spend. I wrote this based on my own experience.

While my own SA said the SM never approves, I briefly chatted with another SA that day who made possible for me to get the SO.

Even though I've been an H client for 10 years, I'm not very experienced when it comes to bags. I was simply sharing my own experience.

Last month, I had the chance to place an A La carte order. However, in the days leading up to it, my own SA had told me they absolutely wouldn’t be able to offer a bag, and that the SM wasn’t even giving approval for clients who were more senior than me.

Later on, by chance, I spoke with another SA. SA offered me two kellys, and when I declined both, SA gave me the opportunity to place an SO.

I hope your story also has an easy and happy ending.

I don't think there is any rhyme or reason to this and it is likely highly dependent on your SM's self imposed "rules". Some people get to place a SO every season, some stores have "no more recently than three years ago" rules.
thanks! given the recent discussion around SMs prioritizing new clients for SOs, curious if anyone has actually been nominated and turned down because they already created an SO recently?
