Hermes Special Order Bags

Since this thread is now huge and the internal links to frequently asked questions no longer work, here is a brief FAQ for newcomers to the Hermes Special Order process.

What are the current choices for "a la carte" Special Order bags?

What is an Hermes Special Order?
Each year Hermes gives select clients the opportunity to customize a classic bag in a made-to-order a la carte process. This thread is only for bag A La Carte orders (please use the separate threads for watch SOs and shoe SOs). "A la carte", "SO" (special order), and "HSS" (horse shoe stamp) are used interchangeably on this forum.

When is the Special Order season?
Currently, there is one SO season each calendar year, opening around the beginning of February and closing when slots run out or the end of December, whichever occurs first. New SO menus are typically leaked in February and remain constant until the following calendar year. Individual stores have complete discretion on when, within this window, they offer SO appointments to their clients.

Which specs can I customize?
Hermes defines which specs can be customized and these specs can change each SO season. Generally these specs include: leather type, leather color, and hardware color. At your SO appointment, your SA will present you will the limited menu of choices including bag types and sizes (Birkin 25, Kelly 28, etc), pre-set combination designs (line, verso, multico, etc), leather choices, leather colors, hardwares, and a map for which options can be selected for which bag type and size. Not all leathers and hardwares are allowed for all bag types and sizes.

Can I make physical changes to a bag definition during SO?
Sometimes clients would like to change a physical aspect of a bag, like increase the handle drop or add a pocket or a strap. Unfortunately, Hermes does not allow any type of alteration to the bag definition during SO. For extensive changes like these, a client would need to pursue a “Horizon order” which can be read about here.

How long will my SO take?
There is no way to predict how long a SO will take from placing the order to receipt of the finished product. Although Hermes has recently put forward efforts to fulfill a la carte orders within a year, it isn’t uncommon for bags to arrive in just a few months or also much longer than the year estimate.

Can my SA give me status my existing SO?
Unfortunately, the info that can be seen by SAs at the local store is very limited. They can generally see if the order is still outstanding (ie hasn’t been cancelled) but do not get status updates beyond that. Some stores will update clients when they get notice that a bag has been shipped from Paris but other stores wait until the bag is physically in store before alerting the client.

Do I need to place a deposit for SO?
In most regions of the world, a deposit is not required for SOs. However, some Asian and Middle Eastern locations do seem to request at least a partial deposit. Deposits may also be required in other regions if the SO selections are very personalized (ie if you have your personal initials hot stamped onto the bag) such that selling the bag to a different client, if the original client declines the bag, would be difficult.

Do I receive confirmation of my SO after placing my order?
In most regions of the world, the client gives their specifications to their SA and that is the last they hear about it until the bag arrives. Paris stores seem to be an exception to this and send the client a confirmation email within a few weeks of placing the order.

Is there a premium for a SO bag?
No, there is no premium price for SO bags. Their price is the same as any other standard stock bag of the same specifications at the time of delivery.

Is my SO a quota bag?
SO bags are generally counted toward a client’s two-bags-per-year limit at the time that the bag is received and paid for. If a client has already maxed out their quota bag allocation for the year, some stores will allow an exception to purchase your SO as a third bag for the year while other stores will require the customer to wait until a new calendar year before receiving the bag. These policies are subject to be changed per store at their convenience so it is always wise to check with your specific SA.

Where can I get ideas for my SO bag?
This thread shows unique combination bags and this thread shows contrasting stitching bags. Please consider posting your bag there once it arrives!

Hello Ladies, I need your input for an upcoming SO.

My Husband was granted a slot for a SO in Paris, I'm happy as a clam, however I'm torn to what I should put together.

I know I want a K25 sellier, was considering both Kelly Pochette and Mini Kelly, however decided not go down that route and stick to something I would use more.

Since this years color chart is quite disappointing (at least for me, because I wanted something colorful and bright) - I was thinking the following options:

A) K25 Sellier Chèvre verso: Etoupe (outside), Lime (inside), either Citron or Jane de Naples (stitching) and PHW

B) K25 Sellier Epsom verso: Etoupe (outside), Lime (inside), either Citron or Jane de Naples (stitching) and PHW

C) K25 Sellier Chèvre verso: Black (outside), Rose Mexico (inside), white (stitching) and PHW

D) K25 Sellier Epsom verso: Celeste (outside), Lime (inside), white (stitching) and PHW

For reference, I already have these bags in neutral colors:
B35 Gold GHW Togo, B30 Black GHW Togo, B30 Gris Pale PHW Swift, B30 Vert Fonce PHW Togo, K28 Barenia Fauve PHW, K25 Etoupe GHW Epsom, KP Blanc PHW Swift, all the other bags are bright and colorful.

What do you think could be a nice combination?

Thank you all
I’d pick C.
For reasons:
1. You already have an etoupe k25 in epsom.
2. Chèvre is so special. I’d especially not do etoupe in Epsom, since those could come by in regular offers. (I get that the inside and stitchings are custom, but not different enough and a bit wasteful for the opportunity IMO)
3. A noir in Chèvre is so classic and the bright pink inside would be so cute!

Pick D if Celeste is your dream color to own in a k.

If I already had an Etoupe K25 Sellier, I would not be considering making another Etoupe K25 Sellier. Out of your choices, I'd probably go with C, though I personally hate white stitching on a black bag.

ETA given what you say your preferences are, I'd easily do a Vert Jade Epsom K25 Sellier.
I have considered Vert Jade, but I would prefer it in alligator and I don't think exotics are an option, but we'll see.
If you already have black and etoupe, why not go for choice D? It is a fun color and more unique. Since it is an SO, I'd prefer for it to be one-of-a-kind.
I might go for D, the more I think about it, the more I like the idea indeed.

Noir in chevre would indeed be delightful, but I'm leaning more towards the celeste. let's see what I decide and will let you all know.

Thank you all for your insights 😍

i like the Celeste...you have all other bases covered...i would look at a gris perle interior if you are going with PHW. (JMO)...i LOVE lime...have a few lime pieces...but celeste is such a fabulous colour, it really doesnt need a competing fabulous colour???

I had my appointment yesterday and thanks to the wealth of information here in the forum I decided on the following specs:
Birkin 30, verso, Chevre, Rouge H outside, Orange Poppy inside, brushed GHW, tonal stitching.

My SA was already waiting for me, led me into a separate room and explained to me that a colleague would come and explain everything to her because it was her first special order and she wanted to do everything perfectly. The colleague was the SA I like least in my boutique...

He also clearly didn't have much interest in the matter and I noticed that he was in a hurry.
The system on the iPad is actually self-explanatory, but when we got to the leather for the outside and I expressed my desire for Chevre, he said it would only work in Togo. No other leather possible.

WTF? I was shocked at first. The color choice for Togo was the least attractive for me... But I thought to myself, that can't be the case! It was clear on the iPad that it was a drop-down menu and I kindly suggested I tap on it and see what happened.
He followed my suggestion and was more than amazed when the other leather options came to light. Incredible.
His reaction: "Oh, yesterday I also had an appointment for an SO and I sold Togo to the customer!" The poor customer...

Afterwards he was of the opinion that he could now leave us for his lunch break and left. At least he brought me the hardware samples beforehand. I didn't see any leather samples either...
My SA was clearly uncomfortable with this, but together we mastered all the next steps and I also received a printout with my specs.
As always, I had a very pleasant shopping experience with her afterwards.

I’m sorry you had that sort of experience. Good thing you are familiar with the color options in different leathers thanks to this forum. I feel bad for those other customers who don’t know any better.

Thank you! I haven't placed one yet as my SA and I just broached the subject recently. I'm hoping to have some more clarity when I go back to the boutique next week to see if I've been approved for this round or not. Fingers crossed!
Update: saw my SA and was told that the SO slots don’t open until mid June. I was pretty surprised as I know the the orders open up in the spring and fall. Has anyone had any experience with a June SO at their store?

It depends from one store to the other. Usually even if SO is available some SM try to take a certain number of orders per month since SO is still considered part of the store bags budget.

Same here. Was told today the SO has closed and I'll have to wait till September.

regarding SO, i’m curious if it’s possible for someone to get 2 SO chance in one season or it’ll have to be from two different store/country?

just curious&/amaze by an influencer’s post.

am i being duped or do they just have amazing luck?
