have you set a limit on the number of bags you will own?

Nope! No limit. But...I do end up feeling queasy when I have too many....and then I inevitably sell the ones I don't use much in order to fund a more expensive/higher quality bag. So now I'm trying to limit my buying habits and think carefully before I get a new one.

I also like the "only fabulous" motto. And I like to think of my bags in terms of categories. This is my collection:

EVERYDAY BAGS (5)
Chanel 2.55 Reissue 226 in Grey Caviar with gold hw
Hermes Massai in Rouge Garance
LV Sofia Coppola PM in Cherry
LV Alma PM in Noir
LV Speedy Empreinte 25 in Aube

BIG TOTES/BAGS (3)
Bottega Veneta Cabat Large in Black
LV Sofia Coppola Regular size in Cobalt
LV Neverfull GM in Damier Ebene

SMALL BAGS (2)
Chanel WOC in Black with gold hw
LV Alma BB in Blanc

And of course, a bunch of SLGs, but they don't count! :-)

Not counting SLG's, I currently have 15 bags in a pretty good variety of sizes/styles...

Premier:
Marc Jacobs Stella (eggplant), Marc Jacobs Multi Pocket (hot pink)
Prada baguette, Prada crossbody (both black)
Gucci signature crossbody (brown)
LV Manhattan PM (monogram)

Mid-Range:
Tory Burch Foldover (purple)
Coach vintage leather crossbody from the 1970s (black), tiny leather crossbody (aqua/green), large leather tote (blush pink)
Kate Spade small polka dot crossbody (black & white), corduroy shoulder bag (red), shopper tote (navy stripes)

For fun:
Vera Bradley owl print
No-name mustard yellow envelope style

The three I keep going back and forth on whether I "need" to keep are the Marc Jacobs Multi Pocket, the Kate Spade corduroy & the aqua/green crossbody Coach since the colors are sufficiently funky that I don't wear them frequently but they were all gifts from my mom so they're sentimental! The Coach tote is also on the possible expendable list bc I don't use it often but I bought it when I was traveling to Costa Rica (needed a large travel bag, didn't want to take my Stella) and now it reminds me of how much fun I had on that trip so it's sentimental too!

I'm definitely a niche person. All of them fit into some sort of category and I don't buy identical or similar bags. 20 seems to be the magic number but that includes canvas cheapo ones. I have 20 belts, 20 ties (I went through a phase and arranged them in a rainbow) and around 20 pairs of shoes too, so I guess I have a natural accessory set point!

It all depends on what your bag niche distribution is like. I like to have a color and neutral in small, medium and large as well as choices of crossbody, tote and hobo. Then a smallish special occasion bag, a nicer classic looking one, a beater I take out in the rain and a briefcase-y messenger. There's overlap but it's hard to hit all those categories with less than 10. I've got 16 leather bags and maybe 3 of them are ones I could lose and not care.

None of them are really designer bags though so I don't feel much guilt. Though, let's face it - any number higher than 5 is probably really above average. Most people seem to have one or two. I used to just have one bag for years, but that was when I didn't care much about putting together a look at all. Now I have more fun but it does seem overkill. But then I realize none of them really have any wear as a result of rotation, so I'm probably good for the next 15 years!

I think most people stop the cycle of buying and selling and setting arbitrary limits when they figure out what their bag niches are. You just have to honestly look at what you think the bags you want offer that your old bags don't. If you keep purging bags with qualities that you'll want again in the future, then you will keep buying.

Or maybe it's as simple as the fact that premier designers are out of my budget so I don't think about them.

No. I'm sure you can have too many, and I'm not a fan of repeating styles in different colours at all. Different bags have different uses and occasions (even if said occasion is the supermarket or bakery or dog walking!)

Right now I have five daytime-size and two small bags and I think that's my limit (due to storage space). If I want a new one then I'll give one of these to charity. Actually I only really use three of the larger ones, and the small ones rarely so I probably could go to three and one!

No, but I'm starting to think maybe I should sell some bags. Which I didn't want to do in the first place.

I don't have a real desire to get anymore bags though. Hopefully after my last purchase later this month, it'll be my last one for a while. Hopefully for the rest of this year.

No. I have not set a limit on how many I will own. I do set a limit on how many I might buy within a year and/or how much I will pay for a bag. But, since I rotate my bags and also either sell or give away ones that I no longer use, I then can get something new.

I think the right number varies from person to person, but for me I have just about reached my limit. I have 13 larger sized bags, all high end designer, with styles ranging from hand-held to hobo to tote style. I have an additional 6 small bags, also all high end designer and these are clutches or small shoulder bags.

I'm definitely the type to use specific bags for specific occasions, so I needed a variety of styles. I also wanted a few colors besides neutrals in my collection. I never buy the same bag in more than one color because for me, that takes away from the specialness of each bag. I have added to my collection over the years - and got rid of some that I felt weren't worthy - and I think it's almost complete.

I am planning on one more addition that I have already picked out, and then I'm done. I came to that realization recently because:

  1. I have a built-in handbag cabinet in my closet and it's almost full.
  2. Sometimes it just takes too darn long to decide which bag I want to wear with a particular outfit because I have too many choices.
  3. Some of my favorite bags hardly get used because I have too many favorites.
  4. I have reached a point where my preferred designer has a price point that is just ridiculous and I need to stop!
  5. I'm really happy and content with what I have right now. :smile1:

I don't have a set limit, I just try to go through my collection every so often and weed out the bags I don't love as much as the rest. That being said, I am running out of space for them, so I probably will start selling bags that get less use than others, and eventually find something of a limit to the number of bags I want to have.

Same here!

Have 13 designer handbag and 15 random brand in my collection, from Balenciaga to Zatchels. So to answer the question "do i limit the number of my bags" I guess not. Hahaha!

I think 10 will be my limit. After that it'll be one in, one out. Over the years, I've become more conscious about practicality in the long run. All of the bags I currently own are in neutral colors and serve different purposes -- 2 totes, 2 crossbodies, 2 satchels. I also avoid buying multiple colors of the same bag style, because then it gets overwhelming and I'm already an indecisive person as is. I also make sure that I really love a bag before purchasing it. I am thinking of adding just one more, a red bag for a pop of color, and then I'll start saving up for my two dream bags. After those two, I think I'll be done.
