have you set a limit on the number of bags you will own?

I think about 50 would be my limit due to space - as I know that 10-15 of them are going to be totes for work, sentimental and some for evening so they are not in actual use all the time.

So even if I have 50 probably 35 of them would be in actual rotation for use (and 10 of those may be seasonal colored purses for summer/spring). So that makes only 25 purses to use year around...........................I need more space!! lol

But I think if I were to get over 25 purses in "actual rotation" some of them would never see use - so I'll stick with that number. I match my purse to the daily outfit so I change often!!

I have OCD so less is best for me. I cannot stand clutter. I pretty much keep mine around 10-12 and that number works pretty great for me. I get really overwhelmed if I start collecting too many so I live by the rule, one in, one out also.
Good luck!! I think you'll be pleased and feel relieved to keep things under control!

A limit? I would say 5......if I were reasonable, which I am not....
I have a whole collection of vintage croc bags which never see the light of day....Too heavy!
And a few premier bags which I rarely use, I am afraid of ruining them....
And a lot of contemporary designer purses which I rotate now....
And this doesn't stop me from looking at other bags...especially now that there are sales on Italian websites.
I would like to sell some of my bags but it is complicated.....

I'm trying to limit myself to 10, but in reality it's more like 20-25. I had a huge overall this year and sold/donated most of my non-designer bags. I also sold a few Mulberries & a D&G bag I didn't use or love to fund a Chanel & some other loves. I'm trying to create a 'forever' collection with bags for every occasion and in a range of colours, hopefully once I've achieved this I'll be content.

I have 34 bags. Twelve of them are strictly spring/summer, twelve are solidly fall/ winter. Of the remaining ten, seven can be worn year round while the remaining three are definitely holiday Christmas/New Year's bags. It has taken me many painstaking years to amass and refine my collection, and I am utterly without shame. :p

Well done! :D

I don't have a set number. I do however have a certain amount of shelf space and I don't like my bags to be squeezed together. So if I want something new at this point, something else must go. I also like when there is some empty white space. I don't necessarily feel like people need to have tiny collections as bags wear out much more quickly that way. For me I like to have choices as long as it is neat and organized.

Yes no more than 15. I don't count really small bags though (clutches, large wristlets) as those serve a specific purpose in my wardrobe. I think I have about 12 or 13 right now and would like to not increase this count until some bags are so worn they will need to retire.

I'm of the same mindset. But I think I'll try for 15 bags.
I think 10 will be designer, and 5 will be non- designer that I can travel with/ carry on rainy days.
I'm almost at my limit.
Crap.

I have about 17 designer bags (13 premier, 4 contemporary) and a few vintage pieces from my grandmother that I won't part with. I live in New York City so space is limited. I find that I try to buy classic, long-term pieces now rather than trendy items. This summer I sold/gave away some bags because my closet was too cluttered. My real problem is shoes however. I must own 80 or so designer pairs (stopped counting). I limit my shoe purchases as a result. I sometimes feel overwhelmed with the amount of shoes in my closet. It's good to purge once a year and reevaluate your current needs.

There was another thread on what bags you would have if you were limited to 3. It's an interesting idea to set a limit. I have way more than what I need, bags that rarely see the light of day. I could probably live with just 5 bags, but I don't think I'd do that any time soon.

I reached 20 bags not that long ago and I kept feeling anxious and stressed about my bags and I felt like I was going insane for being so caught up in my collection that it was stressing me out. But after reading this thread I realize that its time to downsize, so I have given two of my bags to my friend and sister and I instantly feel lighter and more relaxed. So weird!! So I guess my bag limit is 19.

No, I don't have a limit. I'll continue to buy bags as long as I love them. It's like setting a limit on the number of blouses, dresses or sweaters/jackets one buys. I buy clothes because I like them, some I will wear more than others, some may be special occasion that only get worn a couple of times. Every once in a while I'll go through and get rid of the ones I no longer like or use, but I keep what I like. Same with bags, if I like it I'll keep it.

I've seen some photos of fantastic closets on TV and the internet, and seeing how many clothes, shoes, and bags some women have, makes me realize that it's all relative. My bag collection seems very small in comparison, LOL.

I just realized this is ALOT and I'm not using it. The money thing was a part of it; not "OMG I have spent so much and I can't afford it.". Rather, it was "Oh My! I have pissed a lot of money away and I don't even love this stuff." It was easy to rehome the first 5-6 bags and then it got a bit tricky because I felt like I "should" keep it (HG to others, expensive, was a gift, etc.).

And you know what else triggered a second round? I wore a crap outfit to work.

Sure it was professional and clean and tailored, but the fabric was icky, the fit just OK, and the overall look uninspired. And I decided why would I do that too myself? Why not always wear something you feel beautiful in?

And so I tossed a lot of clothes and have since decided to buy less and ONLY buy things I feel fabulous in. So I just have less. Less clothes, less shoes, less bags. But I feel like a million bucks.

OMG! This happened to me and triggered a complete revamping of my wardrobe & thought process. I was so pissed when I saw myself in the mirror that day...especially considering I had spent so much money on STUFF!! I got rid of everything that did not make me feel beautiful, didn't fit right, etc.

Now I only buy it if its classy & makes me feel beautiful!!

Great post!

The bolded part is where I would like to be...

It has taken me awhile to figure out which handbags I really like and which ones work best with my very casual lifestyle. I also need a few for special occasions or business casual attire as needed.

I've been revamping my wardrobe over a number of years, trying to re-work my style and am finally starting to feel like I have a handle on what I want/like to wear now that I am a "woman of a certain age"...included in that is handbags and accessories.

I'd MUCH prefer to have fewer clothes, handbags and pieces of jewelry and have all things that I love and feel fabulous wearing than have a closet full of stuff I don't like that doesn't fit and none of it goes together very well. That is a recipe for frustration.

I am still working on paring down my things.

Very good thread. Thank you!

Yes!! I am doing the same. Keeping what I can feel fab in all the time. ;-)
