H leathers getting thinner?

Thank you so much ladies.:flowers:
I am not familiar with Clemence leather but based on some comments, I assumed that it will flop with use and not be floppy when new
Few tpfers even mentioned that some of their clemence bags retained its shape better than their bags togo (same size and style) , thus the confusion.

Hi ladies,

Lately I heard that the newer Togo tend to be thinner and softer. I'm wondering if anyone as a comparison between T stamp bags vs X stamp bags? Especially for Birkin 30/35?

Are the complaints true?

I have a Q stamp birkin bag and the leather is pretty nice and firm. I wish I could find another birkin like this.

What are your experience?

I have a Q stamp birkin that is thinner than my J and L. I notice my recent R & T are thinner too.

I only own one B and it's an R stamp and it's definitely soft. I've barely used it and it's flopping in the corners...

I have an R stamp B and recently got an X stamp B. The leather on the X stamp definitely feels thinner to me, especially the straps. I am extra careful when I pull the straps to close the bag. Feel like the leather would tear if I pull too hard. But the bag also feels lighter.

In regards to togo slouching faster, in 2008 and SA told me that some types of togo slouch more than others and it isn't necessarily a quality issue. I don't know if it's true or not. One of mine was sent for spa last year and when it came back it was less slouchy than it was when it was sent.

Got my first B35 Togo 4 weeks ago and the leather is much thinner than I imagined.it would be.

I was underwhelmed at first to be honest. The corners are a litte floppy already.

There have been soft and slouchy leathers for quite some time at Hermes so just because a bag slouches or collapses doesn't necessarily mean it is thinner leather. Clemence has always been slouch prone whereas Ardennes and fjord were/are not. However you can no longer get fjord and ardenne. However, the quality of bags these days is definitely not what it used to be. Epsom doesn't slouch for example. Hermes is using more and more Epsom even on shoes is because it is much less expensive and increases profit margins It is pressed and stamped. (Kind of like Van cleef using cheaper materials and smaller weight items. ) With Epsom the color is consistent from piece to piece and it holds its shape. And Much higher profit margin.

Is it normal for a Birkin 35cm to have visibly thinner side panels than a 40cm? I noticed on my B35 Bleu Paon bought a month ago and my 40cm Ultraviolet bought in November 2012. Both are Clemence and directly from H stores.

Sorry for the crappy pics, took them quickly with my iPhone in really bad lighting...

Wow...that is a HUGE difference. One could guess the 40 is thicker to accommodate more weight and due to the added structural heft needed to support the larger size but I never realized the difference was that large...

You know what, my first B35 togo (I only have another B in 30 but in TC) has really thin sides. Like literally paper thin! I didnt think too much of it until you brought it up! Oh no!

I've often wondered why my Gris T B's straps were so floppy. Now I found out why compared against my reliable Chocolate B. I fully understand that each panel of leather comes from different animals. However considering the weight of the hardware at the end of the straps mine are definitely not holding up

Couldn't be evidenced more clearly.

Thinner leather doesn't necessarily mean less durability - but for an everyday, workhorse bag it can't mean more longevity

Wow -these pics show very visible differences. I have an L stamp TC B40 that is thicker than my later TC B35s - I think it may be what was said above- to make up for weight/structure of the 40. It would be interesting if it was done for some other reason. Not sure how to account for the difference between the straps if those are Birkins of the same size -regardless, they should certainly be "holding up". You would think that in a globalized world culture were "athleisure" is being sold, that making bags lighter and thinner to appease customers would never cause H to shirk their culture/responsibility of creating high-quality bags similar to what Grace Kelly or Jane Birkin first carried. On the other hand, a friend suggested that having to destroy a major amount of R year bags may have had its costs. Who knows?
H, while classic, has changed over the years in terms of leathers and production. However, I have to believe that fundamentally, they would try to avoid putting out poor product that would weaken or cheapen the brand. Given the investment we have all made, I hope that's the case. :frown:
