H leathers getting thinner?

do we think it is because the are stretching the leather thinner, to produce larger surface area, hence squeeze say, 5 bags out of a hide that would have made 3 before?

or just the quality of animal skin has changed? sources of skins?

and what is the negative effect? more slouchiness?

hmm good observation. but for me as long as it's lighter and more durable i wouldn't have problems with that.

It is purely the leather itself today. Hermes leathers today are getting thinner. Those who have older vintage Kellys can attest and will agree H leathers from 30-40 years ago are thicker.;)

Slightly heavier.:smile1: I was surprised on how light Clemence Evelynes today as compared before. It slouches and fold immediately the moment the SA took out the stuffing inside.

wow i can't imagine the evelyne being any heavier. i bought my gm3 in late 2009 and i deem it heavy already

I started another thread on this issue but was directed here instead...I know this is an old discussion so I hope its ok to still contribute...

My question is...how are the newer, thinner Clemence bags holding up?? I saw 2 bags in Ultraviolet Clemence & they felt more lightweight than I expected from Clemence (which is a good thing to me). And the feel was so silky smooth- like a feather, whereas the older Clemence bags I have have a rougher feel (they are still very soft, but not silky soft like the bags I saw the other day- they have more of a texture I guess?).

After reading this thread, I think you ladies must be right that the leather is being stretched more, making it thinner. This makes sense because on the recent Clemence bags the grain also looks flatter & less pronounced than on the bags I have from a few years ago.

I don't mind the look & feel of the Ultraviolet bags I saw-- but I do worry about how they will wear over time. Since the older, thicker Clemence got very floppy over time, I wonder how these bags will hold up? The Ultraviolet was sooooooo beautiful in Clemence but I really don't want to spend almost 10k on a bag that isn't going to hold it's shape. :( Thoughts??

H has to be able to obtain a certain quantity of leathers/skins to keep up with current production demands. An unintended consequence of such is that the leathers and skins used a decade or so ago far exceed the quality of current leathers and skins.

No, they know fully well what they are doing. My SA warned me of this a while back.
