H leathers getting thinner?

My SA told me that they are making the leathers thinner, in an attempt to make the bags lighter. I have noted a significant difference in my R stamp bags (both Togo and Clemence) vs earlier bags in the same leathers.

I'm new to H and I feel the Togo leather is thin. However the clemance ones feel thick enough to my like.. But I don't have older bags for comparison..

for me thinner does not always mean poorer quality.

think gadgets - smaller & lighter & faster

Think winter clothes - thinner but warmer & lighter.
This is generally true with products that are improved by technical improvements on man-made materials. Leather unfortunately can't be developed the way an alloy or a man-made insulation fiber can.

To the current topic - my brand new Clemence Evelyne is definitely a thinner leather than my N stamp Clemence Birkin. In addition, when the new Evelyne met with a bad accident on a plane and was soaked, the leather stretched immediately and has remained misshapen, whereas the B is years old and has retained its shape although slouchy. (I haven't yet found out if the damage to the new bag can be fixed as I have to wait for the airline's response to the damage.)

I got a thin togo gold B around when this thread originated. Don't like the thin leather, but then I prefer clemence anyway. Unless thinner hides are cheaper, I am not sure how it would save money.

I never understood the weight issue. If it is different, we are talking ounces.

Can't imagine how it would save costs. Not like you can turn one hide into two by shaving it in half

To me lighter to carry is marketing code for saving production cost, though they are still the benchmark when it comes to quality.

All I can think is that perhaps the thicker hides are more rare and therefore more expensive to buy from their leather source--if this is in indeed the case that they are intentionally making the bags with thinner leather for monetary reasons. :confused1:

LV started this trend just a few years ago with thinner lower quality leather- my vintage LV bags have superior thicker leather- the difference is obvious and heartbreaking.

Coincidence H bags are going down the same bridle path with LV encroachment on the H brand? I think not.

It's not a case of a different animal. This has been going on for around a year now. They're basically trimming costs. Think about it.

Same thing with exotics. Going from croc to alligator, etc.

I don't have experience with Clemence leather, is it normal for a brand new B to be that floppy?
Or is it due to the thinner leather?

Your bag is stunning! Which colour is it?
I have a new clemence K32 and I can't say that the leather seems to be thin. She is quite heavier and is feeling smooth and rich.
But I have no comparison.
