"Don't buy clothes, save your money for jewelry"

I think it is a question of balance - jewellery is a great investment and does a lot to polish someone's appearance, but being well-turned out in general is also important and can be achieved without spending a fortune if you know where to look. I spend my money on bags and coats as I think if a woman wears a beautifully cut and well-made coat such as one from MaxMara (LOVE their coats) with a good bag and nice accessories (eg scarf, sunglasses etc) the clothes do not matter that much as long as they are of reasonable quality and in good condition. You can also get good clothes for such reasonable prices these days that there is no need to spend a lot of money. I buy a lot of my clothes in the sales and/or from outlet stores such as The Outnet (for online shopping), TK Maxx etc and have got some great stuff this way like a lovely Calvin Klein shirt dress for £50, a Miu Miu belt for £40 etc. No need to spend hundreds at RRP in an over-priced designer store. I buy a lot of my good purses at discount too or preloved on Ebay/through contacts but am a sucker for Mulberry and most of my spare money has gone on Mulberry items in the last year. For some reason I'm not too bothered about shoes, perhaps because I don't treat them very well so there's no point in spending a lot - I try not to spend more than £70 max on a pair - as long as they look nice I'm happy and not concerned about the label on them.

Now that I'm happy with my purse collection I'm going to try and divert any spare funds to buying nice jewellery to build up a good core collection. I'm not too bothered about makes though, as long as the jewellery is of good quality. My mum always told me to buy the best that I can afford and I try to stick to that philosophy for anything I purchase and refuse to buy rubbish - better to go without! I have some nice family pieces such as an Omega watch gifted to me by my mum (it used to belong to her) and some beautiful rings from my grandmother which I save for special occasions and on a day to day basis I wear simple diamond or pearl studs with some sort of pendant necklace and my engagement/wedding rings. DH has bought me some jewellery but I tend to prefer to buy my own, mainly because I know I will always end up with something that I like!

I'm totally into high end jewellery at the moment. Just bought myself Cartier Love Bracelet in WG and loving it sooo much. I will definitely keep all my jewellery and pass it to my daughter when the time it's right and i know for sure that she will love it and those pieces will always be in the collection.. for many many many years to come..

My prioreties changed in the past few years, I used to buy the latest fashion clothes, shoes and bags which were very seasonal and colorful/ bold prints but now I am very selective and buy more classic/ timeless clothes like wrap dresses in solid colors, no prints, I invest in nice pieces and buy the basic from high street shops. I'm into fine jewelry like VCA, Bulgari and Boucheron and again in their classic lines. I am very happy to reach that stage of WISDOM ;);)

Ever since I saved for and purchased my Speedy 25 at the tender age of 17, my approach to all spending has been only to buy high-quality things that will last. I have no real interest in the labels on the inside of my clothes. I buy high-quality, long lasting clothes and shoes (I'm probably far too practical for my age when it comes to this!), and I find to fulfil these objectives it mostly doesn't actually equate to things being designer. I hate buying things that wear out before I can decide I'm done with them. I definitely like to get my money's worth from everything I purchase! The only exception to this is that I like to buy designer jeans, but again, I find these just last and last for several years. I live in jeans, and I think great jeans make a huge difference to my outfits. You also just can't beat the fit of well-made denim! All my bag purchases are based on the fact I can see myself wearing and enjoying it for years to come - not what is the latest 'it' bag is. I am finding myself drawn to designer shoes of late (Louboutins particularly), although I can't bring myself to actually purchase because I feel like in just a few short years the styles/designs will be over. And of course, shoes will simply wear out even if the design is still in style.

Bags were my 'thing' for the last 6/7 years ago, but now I am really getting in jewellery in a big way! When I say jewellery, I mean diamonds, because I know these will literally last forever. This appeals to me with my obsession with quality and longevity! There are a few designer items that I like - i.e. the Cartier Love and a Rolex, but I mostly have no interest in buying branded jewellery.

I am only in my early 20s and know I am far too old for my time! Sometimes I do actually wish I could be a little more frivolous like my friends are, but maybe this will come down the road when I am in the financial position to be so. I can afford to buy the things I like and want right now, but I have to plan my money and can't afford to spend on whims. Overall I think I probably have a good balance, but I know my friends think I'm nuts to drop so much money on certain things at this time of my life when they can buy 10 things for the money I spend on 1 thing!

I would love to start adopting this theory! historically my money has gone to clothes: designer denim, nice coats and fancy dresses etc.

However, I really want to learn more about quality jewelry and invest in timeless pieces like others have said that will add more to an outfit and will look nice even if I ate too many cupcakes :)

I actually found this forum seeking advice for new jewelry lol and this community is very knowledgable!!

ITA with Swanky... I like saving up "gifts" and having it put toward 1 nice piece of jewelery from DH. It's weird.. I can totally throw down $$ on a nice bag for myself.. but I'd rather have my jewelry come from dh too. I think when it comes from dh or someone else in general.. it adds more sentimental value to it. :girlsigh:

+2 but from SO/family. I don't like to buy myself nice jewelry either.

That has been my thinking these days, that I'm better off spending on jewellery than bags or clothes.

But its really a reflection of the larger perspective of buying good quality pieces which wear well, as opposed to many trend pieces. So I don't mind paying more for a dress that drapes beautifully and shoes that fit well - it may mean less of everything, but at least everything looks put together.

I subscribe 100% to this theory! Jewelery can last a lifetime...

I spend much more on jewellery than on clothes. I also started buying luxury accessories (bags, shoes, scarves, belts...) because I think that it's a better "investment" than clothes. I believe that jewellery and accessories are what makes the difference bewteen "basic" and "elegant" looks.

And when buying clothes I try to buy only high-quality items...even if that means I can buy less.

As someone who is obsessed with jewelry, I will say that I spend more money on it than clothing.
Lately I've been on a minimal kick, just a plain shirt and trousers or a solid dress. I let the adornment do the talking.

:)

Love this thread and all so true!
Jewelry never wears out. I collect only classic pieces...like clothes but with a twist.
Hermes handbags.
If you have a great tailor you can buy less expensive clothes yet still look polished.
Just know when to throw them out. I'm probably guilty of hanging onto things for too long....

i believe it's the person who wears the clothes, not clothes who wear a person. although nice quality clothing is a bonus. I've always been a bargain shopper when it comes to clothes and shoes…occasionally if it's something that just won't go on sale and i'm dying to have, then i'll take the plunge. i've been taught at a young age by my parents that the wisest thing to buy and invest in is real estate. now that i'm older and my husbands family builds homes, it's easier to understand that mentality. i say buy properties, jewelry and birkins!!

Great thread....:) hello ladies and gents I do agree about buying nice piece of jewelry and not so much in clothing:) I was very young when I was into jewelry and that because of my mother who loves nice pieces of jewelry...so growing up I always rememeber I always have a nice earring and for special occasion I have a set of jewelry so that being said I got into jewelry and I do love it too:) when I got my first job I save my money for my 14k bracelet which is I'm so glad I did coz compared it now..gold is triple expensive:) so I have a nice descent amount of jewelry and I do not buy expensive clothing I always go shop for bargain and I'm always casual and I like simple clothing so no need for LV scarf...lol before I rambled more..lol now that I'm 30 I did stop buying jewelry...I completed what I wanted 5 years ago:) but never say never:)
