So what kind of jewelry will retain value more?

My two cent, cartier/tiffany low ticket items do not retain value, once they are out of the store price drop Immediately.

I think only high end bling will appreciate and retain!

I definitely agree with this statement. I buy a few expensive clothes ie Chanel (mostly resale) and tend to invest more into jewelry(watches, diamonds and brands such as Cartier and Van Cleef, fur(does that count as clothes...how can you say no to sable?) and handbags(only Hermes).

I do think it is important to make sure you invest in real estate.

As far as clothes go, I don't think it is my number 1 priority.

this is something im trying to go with .. but got sidetracked for the past year or so with shoes... clothing..

but im trying to get back on track... as DH has already spoken... he would rather buy me more jewelry and watches than clothes and shoes..

ive been the type who always gets her own way and doesn't want to listen..
but i guess he is right... so now save money for more jewels then... :)

Gosh I just went on a shoes and clothing binge! Got side track big time and went on a shopping spree these past few days and bought all these high end designer clothes and amazing shoes! Couldnt help it!! But I've been good for awhile and have been saving! All of a sudden went nuts and for the past few days lost sight of my goals and bought everything in sight. Must be time for retail therapy! It's ok I guess, we all have to look good too and clothes do matter too. It's the complete package right? Clothes, shoes, bags, jewelry!! But beautiful clothes makes me so happy too, I feel beautiful when I wear beautiful clothes so clothing do matter too. I think it's about balance.

I'm having to rein it in... I used to work for a denim company, so my work attire was skinny jeans and tees. Now I'm at a stay-at-home-non-mom but looking to break into marketing/fundraising for arts/education. I've been buying grown-up clothes non-stop for various lunches/meetings I have with people in the field.

I did score the most fabulous Moschino dress at Off 5th though! It retailed for $2150 and after all discounts/coupons, I scored it for $265. Since the tailor didn't have my other clothes ready on time, alterations for this one is free too!

I'm planning on wearing it (it's a ruched sheath with a black and white heart print) to a friend's garden wedding. My ex-bff will be there and I know he's going to be giving me the hate stare the entire time... oh well, I'll at least be lookin' FABULOUS while he does it!

I completely agree! It's the complete package, it's very hard to make something cheap-looking (I mean not cheap, but cheap-looking) look gorgeous with jewelry, even with high-end ones. So we should save money for both, don't we? But could anyone tell me how?? Because I also completely agree with you on the "couldn't help it" issue! No matter how long I've been good, the result is the same: according to your terms, "retail therapy"! Someone has to know the trick to be able to save money only for jewelry...

"Don't buy clothes, save your money for jewelry"--would this apply to handbags as well???? I'm thinking of buy another purse >$1K....I'm thinking of an LV bag, but then I also think about using that $ to buy a beautiful piece of jewelry instead--VCA, perhaps. Jewelry definitely lasts longer than handbags/SLG.

Thoughts on this?

I agree and I am throwing handbags and shoes into the statement as well! Well chosen jewelry lasts forever! Clothes, shoes, and bags to me are temporary..plus unfortunately I get tired quickly of bags so it seems like a waste of $!

My mom always tells me to buy jewelry instead of shoes and handbags. I don't get as much pleasure doing this, but I totally understand the concept and the rate of return. I have bought some very expensive pieces (I love pink sapphires and diamonds), but they just sit in my safe. Just like my shoes and handbags, my jewelry is a collection that I play with but rarely use.

It's about balance for me right now at this stage in my life...I'm in my early 20's so I'm just starting to build my basic jewelry wardrobe. I've been gifted 3 investment watches (Hermes, Cartier, Rolex) that I love so much.

My next purchase that I am saving for on my own will be some nicer quality pearl studs and necklace. I'm dreaming of upgrading my diamond studs to 1 tcw. No more fake pearls/studs for me. I'm not in a rush to accumulate a bunch of fine jewelry, I just need the basics since my jewelry preferences are pretty simple.

That being said, I get so much more enjoyment out of clothes and shoe shopping! I'm not really into the dramatic high/low look of cheap clothes and expensive accessories (Forever 21 with LV and diamonds). I'd rather go for the higher/middle range clothes bought on sale with minimal but elegant accessories (Club Monaco/Theory/Zara/J.Crew with MJ bag and minimal jewels).

I don't agree. clothing is really a huge part of appearance. Good jewelry is also super expensive and not everyone can afford it. A great outfit with costume jewelry or even low-end fine jewelry (like fine jewelry under $100 you can get at dept stores) can be sufficient enough to look good.
i dunno. clothes do it for me more than anything. i can usually find inexpensive accessories to spruce my look up....

I'm completely with you on the bolded bit, except for the "minimal jewels". Love my jewelry! :D

i hardly ever pay retail for clothes! unless it's a special event or a piece i NEED. i think i have a good balance between clothes, shoes/purses, and fine jewelry.

my mom is the same way, but she is leans more to fine jewelry. she has a few jeweler friends and always negotiates on jewelry. when bailey banks and biddle went out of business we both invested in pieces we most likely wouldn't buy at full price. my mom also cannot justify super expensive shoes/purses (like a Birkin or CLs). if she buys those items, she finds a good deal or goes to Europe (which i have learned from her to do). BUT she would rather purchase fine jewelry. i think i'm at a good balance!
