"Don't buy clothes, save your money for jewelry"

My grandmother passed last September and since I was the one to manage all the things she left behind, I think differently about clothes and jewelry.
I had to sell/donate all of her things, such as clothes, shoes, bags, accessories, ect. and it was such a hard task. Because everything mattered to her and she loved these things, only for me to throw it away. Really, I tried to like a few things and wanted to use them but, I didn´t. Because they were old, and it didn´t matter what brand. The only thing she left for me that had real value and for what I am incredible thankful for, is her jewelry. She left me complete box of necklaces, rings, bracelets and even a Cartier watch. All solid gold, no costume jewelry. And even if some pieces were not my style, I was able to sell them at an amazing value, to buy me jewelry I really liked.
I am so happy and to come to the point - this made me see clothes differently. I love clothes and buy a lot, although I never buy new and only discounted designer prices of high quality, but it changed my sight of for what to save next. I now try to spend my money more on jewelry, because this is the only thing that will last and even my granddaughters will be happy with.

When I was raiding her closet, I felt so bad...because I imagined it being mine and my grandchildren throwing everything away I once loved and cherished because first, it won´t be worth anything anymore and second, because it will be old. And then I imagined them to open up my jewelry box and being thrilled by what they inherited. And as I said before, even if it´s not their style or taste, gold and diamonds always have value, so they can sell and buy something valuable they like and of course to pass on themselves.

But of course I still buy clothes and shoes and bags, because a girl gotta look nice and polished, right? :graucho:

I love this discussion and I've been enjoying reading everyone's responses. Now in my late 20's I'm definitely starting to shop less for clothing, bags, and shoes and put more money into classic jewelry pieces. I feel like I'm at a point in my life where I feel very comfortable in my own personal style so I buy fewer clothes based on trends, and stick to the simple styles and pieces that I know work for me. I've always been a sale shopper, but now I'm much more selective about what I buy and how often I shop. Even if it's a great deal, I think a lot about how often I'll wear it, how versatile it is, and how well it actually fits me. In terms of jewelry, I've culled my collection down to the few high quality, signature pieces that I wear all the time and my goal is to add to that collection with classic pieces that can be worn every day. I've realized that I really just love diamonds, so I'm trying to build up a collection of high quality diamond pieces instead of having lots of things that I don't wear very often. (If I had unlimited funds I would totally buy some amazing over the top, royalty-style jewelry too, but alas, that's not the case:lawl:). I have some great costume pieces, but like everything else, I've become much more selective when purchasing and I rarely spend over $35 on anything costume. TJMaxx has yielded some great finds! I find that everything looks more expensive when you wear it with diamonds :p

I love that fine jewelry lasts forever. LovingDiamonds has a great point: like that I can wear my e-ring and diamond solitaire pendant every day and (with a little polishing) they will still look beautiful when I pass them on to my grandchildren. If I wore a great pair of shoes every day, I'm fairly positive that would not be the case.

There are so many other fantastic points in here too but these two really resonated with me:
Onebagtoomany- Have a great coat!
Jssl1688- Real estate properties and jewelry!

I have enjoyed reading every minute of this thread and every ones post! I wanted to contribute by saying that I realize now that good quality jewelry and diamonds are forever. I am 21 and I can honestly say I have never been into jewelry before, that however is changing quickly! I spend a lot (all) of my money on designer handbags (LV and Chanel only) and Christian Louboutin shoes! But something in me changed a few months ago. I decided that I needed some quality timeless jewelry pieces in my life! So I started saving up my money and I bought myself my first watch! I bought myself a Cartier Ballon Bleu 36 Automatic! It was honestly one of the best decisions ever made! I realized the importance of quality jewelry when I started begging my mom to wear her 24ct Gold earrings that she received as a push present (prego with me) from my father over 20 years ago, that are just as beautiful today as they were 22 years ago!!!

I am currently saving for a pair of 2.5carat Diamond Hoop earrings! I am so excited! I know that when I have a daughter one day she will be begging me to wear them ;) :) <3

This advice was given to me by the most elegant, polished woman I know. She's 52 and married to a hedge fund manager so I realize our lifestyles are somewhat different (understatement of the year). But she said that the biggest lesson she'd like to pass on is that when she was a working young woman, she should have saved her money for jewelry. She advises just a few very basic pieces worn over and over again, and putting the money you otherwise would have spent on clothes into her jewelry.

Does anyone follow this philosophy? Just curious.

Yeah I totally agree with her philosophy, In my life I always used to save money for beautiful jewelry, I didn't spend so much money to buy clothes. Because I was very simple in my dress-up. :smile1:

I have been buying jewelry and saving for it since I am 18 (I am 42 now) I have way over 150k worth of jewelry. Things I have bought have tripled in value too. Gold and Diamonds even silver only go up in value. You can never go wrong building a jewelry wardrobe.

I thought of this thread today because I went through all of my clothes this weekend and sold a bunch of things at Crossroads Trading Co. I was ruthless and got rid of everything that I don't absolutely love, need, and feel amazing in! While in the past, I may have taken the value in trade and bought some other clothes with the money I got, this time, I decided to cash out and take the check. That money is going towards some jewelry :happydance:

I agree with so many posts. I have even cut down on my bag buying to get more jewelry.
It is my personal stealthy luxury. I love bags, but nothing beats a new bracelet , ring or earrings.

I wanted to raise some cash recently, and decided to part with some purses rather than my jewelry. It was painful, but my reasoning is that in 10 years I would have either well seasoned purses of doubtful value, or the Van Cleef which will be as beautiful as the day I bought it (and hopefully worth more than what I paid for it!)

You'd think a 52 year old woman married to a hedge fund manager who have learned a thing or two along the way. It's ok to buy jewelry you for yourself to wear. Stick to more conventional means like 401k, real estate, etc to make your money grow.

I actually don't, but I think she is right, so I wish I was doing that! But I have always been more drawn to clothes for some reason, and I rarely wear jewelry, so choosing clothes over jewelry has always come naturally to me, even though now that I am older, I realize this is not the smart choice to make.

So I definitely need to re-think this whole issue!
