Me too, clothes will never be able to retain their value like jewelryYes. I would rather buy nice jewelery than buying lots of clothes. She advised you well.
You'd think a 52 year old woman married to a hedge fund manager who have learned a thing or two along the way. It's ok to buy jewelry you for yourself to wear. Stick to more conventional means like 401k, real estate, etc to make your money grow.
This advice was given to me by the most elegant, polished woman I know. She's 52 and married to a hedge fund manager so I realize our lifestyles are somewhat different (understatement of the year). But she said that the biggest lesson she'd like to pass on is that when she was a working young woman, she should have saved her money for jewelry. She advises just a few very basic pieces worn over and over again, and putting the money you otherwise would have spent on clothes into her jewelry.
Does anyone follow this philosophy? Just curious.![]()
This is my favourite thread - I am glad to see it's back.
I swing from buying clothes to buying jewellery phases but agree that when it comes to selling clothes, they have such poor re-sale value.
I am currently saving for some jewellery and reading this thread helps to keep me motivated - it will be quite some time before I have the funds for the piece I want!
I have 2 little girls 3 and under and instead of buying them toys for their birthday I am buying them special jewelry pieces. They have received many toys from everyone else but this jewelry will still be around when they are 20, 40, etc. I have definitely changed my focus and am allowing my jewelry to update my wardrobe instead of continually buying new clothes.
