Prompted by this thread I was curious about my own clothing spending habits. After tallying last years purchases it seems that 2/3 of what was bought under the clothing/shoe/category isnt being worn/used. So this year instead of spending the budget on $$$ unworn clothes...I got my first little vca with change to spare. Way more fun and memorable! Thank you all!

Congrats!

Even the simplest clothes from H&M can look like it's bought from Neiman Marcus given the right jewelry. Wear a plain white tee and shorts, but you have the Love dangling from your wrist or a Soleste on your finger and you will look so chic. I love jewelry and bags too. But I think jewelry will be forever. :)

I have nice jewelry and hardly ever wear it so it is a waste for me to invest in jewelry at this stage of my life. I derive far more joy from a closet full of gorgeous clothing than a jewelry box of gems and jewels.

Since my mom passed away,i have inherited 90% of her jewelry, the other 10 went to my brother. Her jewelry all 18k and up,mostly she designed herself and some from her grandmother. Yes,as guilty as i am, i cant imagine myself wearing her rings or bracelets (they are so out of date *cringe*) so i sold them all and i kept only the heirloom pieces. The money i used to finance resetting the diamond bracelet into a ring and a flower shaped diamond ring into a pin which done beautifully. Iam glad that i did that because i am not much of gold jewelry collector and i'd rather see my mom's pieces transform into something that i could wear in present. Sort of a reminder of her but in a modern way.
Nice thread and i hope it wont be closed soon.

What iam trying to say is that gold can last forever than clothes. However, having a drawer full of jewelry trinkets is not considered a good investment either. It is nice to have basic classic investments pieces i.e diamond ring, tennis bracelet, pin, necklace, or earrings let it be studs, hoops, dangling anything that suit your lifestyle just like we all need black pants, nice jeans, and other foundation clothes. Its all about balance.

I got the same advise from my grandma and my mom, both very elegant women who always wore classic understated clothes with beautiful jewelry. I now have the same philosophy and I'm happy to have invested in jewelry from a young age, I have been wearing and appreciating it for years now, and If it gets old I can always reset the non-branded 18k pieces and rocks.

I have never been one to spend a lot on branded clothes. I buy what fits and looks good. If it is cheap, great. If it's expensive, oh well. BUT...I have always wanted very nice accessories (mostly jewelry and bags, I'm not really into shoes). Classic jewelry and bags stand the test of time and don't come and go like some clothing trends. And as has been mentioned above, even an inexpensive outfit can be instantly elevated by well-chosen quality accessories.

I like clothes. It is important to me to look put together, but don't own a ton of expensive clothing pieces, only maybe a slight few. Reason being is that clothes get not nice a lot quicker than jewelry, know what I mean? Clothes get worn, and tattered, and the bottoms of pants get destroyed after two years or so. I like to get nice denim sometimes but I find brand new or barely used authentic jeans (Seven For All Mankind, Citizens of Humanity, Joe's Jeans, etc.) at a high end consignment shop down the road for like 60.00 per jean. You can also look like a million bucks by mix and matching high and low clothing items, or not even wearing any expensive clothing but clothing that is still nice quality. I do really like clothes but I find that they do not hold up as well as jewelry does, in the long run. This is why I have decreased my love for clothes over the past year or so, and transferred it over to jewelry.

I've only recently tumbled down the jewelry rabbit hole. I've always bought clothes and shoes from quality brands when on sale. Purses were the first things I spent substantial money. I bought my first designer bag as a teen fifteen years ago and have a nice collection of premier and contemporary purses now.

Now that I'm looking at jewelry, though, I'm in a better financial place and I feel like I'm looking at higher end jewelry lines than bags. I don't own any Chanel bags as my pieces of choice tend to veer towards their minaudières, but I'd be willing spend that much on a VCA piece. I've not been interested in Hermès until I took a look at their gold pieces. Are there any others here who wear high-end jewelry lines with contemporary bags?

I'm guessing the lady in the OP who was mentioned meant that moderately priced clothing can go a long way if accessorized with good jewelry. I tend to agree with that, and that's what I do. I don't buy much brand name jewelry, but I have inherited some wonderful pieces from parents and in laws, and I treat them with care, resetting as needed. One thing I love to see is when someone has signature pieces. That just appeals to me strongly. To me, jewelry and people have this potential to attract each other, and when we find pieces that speak to who we are, we are forever bonded.
